The bios programmer has already arrived.
Now need to get it all setup on my laptop before attempting to flash XTXH-LC bios onto 6900XTU.

I am also working on CTR2.1.
The initial settings are just stupidly unstable. I got now P1 and P2 working after manual tuning. I need to fine tune further as Cinebench sometimes crashes with error message with these settings though in built stability test in CTR ran through without issues.
Multi-threaded score was around 8960.
With curve optimizer I got max 8700.

Reference cards and other might not only benefit from adding thermal pads to the backplate - for a while I have been using a 90mm fan blowing down on the backside of the GPU mount - using a 120mm placed near the front of the card with the fans above the GPU blowing down gave another 2 degress celcius on memory temps - so ad a fan and keep it cool

Yeah, generally correct, though I must say, the 6800XT reference has a really decent stock cooler, I tried adding some pads on the back, could not notice any meaningful difference on vram or power circuitry vs without extra pads on the back (with good internal airflow). I was a bit weary when I got it, as AMD reference coolers where always utter garbage, but for the 6000 series they are surprisingly good

But as you say, a combo of extra pads on the back and a fan blowing on it would shave a couple of degrees off.

my gpu temp dropped like 4-6c when i aplied missing thermal pad that had like 2-3mm space between block and contact points i dont think there was any risk of shorting but added to be sure, tightnend it a bit more to, hotspot seems unchanged so far
Only place i got pads on the back is memory and core like ekwb suggested maybe could've added few extra pads at vrm spots as well on the back.

hey guys, I have an issue on my MSI Gaming Trio X 6900XT ... it seems that the junction temp is climbing very high up to 110-114C if I increase the power limit to the max.
I have undervolted it to 1070mv on the gpu and have the power limit to default (0) and I get the gpu frequency in games between 2450-2520 and the mem is OC to 2088mhz.
The junction temp in this case goes up to around 90-100C

I saw a review pointing out that there seems to be somekind of issue with this specific cooler and how it makes contact with the chip. I am quite dissapointed as I have also saw that this might be one of the best pcb and vrm on a 6900xt...so great for OC...and it is useless in this instance

Any ideas? I was thinking about replacing this cooler altogether but there are not a lot of options

What's the difference between GPU temp and Junction temp? Other than that, replacing paste, which also means opening the cards. Best option is a waterblock, but those add extra cost, even more so if you don't have the other components for a water loop.

Yes, the difference in temps is about 30 C. I don't have the means and the time to set up watercooling so I can't add the waterblock...I don't want to loose the warranty either.
I will try and tighten up the other 3 screws and see how it goes.

Don’t tighten the screws at all if you can’t tighten all four. It might just get worse.

For me the solution was to open my card and replace standard thermal past with Liquid Metal and my max hotspot went to below 78°C.

I had a few 6900XT fan cooled in my hands in the past.
If you increase powerlimit then temperature goes quickly to higher than 90°C.
What always helped was custom fan profile where fan already running at relatively high speed even at low temperatures and also please turn off Zero RPM feature in the drivers otherwise fan stops every time it has opportunity to do so thus temperatures are worst when you are Ocing the card.

Unfortunately, from my experience 6900XTs produce a lot of heat when you increase power limit with MPT and therefore not easy to cool without waterblock.
People who very seriously want to squeeze the best OC performance out of their 6900XT eventually end up by changing to water block.
One need but to test the card first. Some cards don't OC well at all. In that case water block would be an overkill.

On 6900XT Red Devil, I was using 95% fan profile to keep temperatures in range of 95°C on hotspot.

So here we go with first results with new 21.7.2 drive and the XTXH-LC bios flashed on my Liquid Devil Ultimate.
Memory is running at 2310MHz with Fast Time 2.

I have finally crossed the 24K Time Spy mark.
There is still some room for improvement.

I saw power consumption up to 460W on Core during the Time Spy Graphic test 2.

There is also Fire Strike Ultra score. I am now over 16K.

There are people in Hardwareluxx forum who are getting score close to 24800.
The new drive does also some magic.
I need to tune further to get into that region.

I did further Curve optimization for 5900X in bios and Cinebench score went from ~8620 to ~8835 but it did not show much effect on my GPU score in Time Spy.
It is still in same range like before.

I have also changed the pads from Alphacool (3w/mK) Ultra Soft to Alphacool Rise Ultra Soft (7w/mK).
I see that my memory temperatures during Time Spy run went down from ~54°C previously to ~48°C.







I changed the pads. I am still using Liquid Metal and to protect the small exposed components around the Die, I MX-5 filling this area.

If done many times they tend to ignore bug reports via tool, like i can easily reproduce a driver crash 99% of the time just opening live view on my synology surveilance station in firefox and they ignored that bug report for since i got my gpu, they responded on reddit driver thread about pink issue so they gonna look into it, its easy to reproduce so i doubt they ignore it once they try reproduce it unless they have no clue and try reproduce under wrong conditions.

I doubt they ignore them, but no doubt they have a huge pile of reports to work through, and even sorting through them and assigning the work is likely a huge undertaking. I'd expect everything to get worked on sooner or later though. That driver crash on opening the Synology live view sounds like it could just as easily be an issue with Synology's implementation of that web interface though - it might not be something AMD is able to fix. Depends on what exactly is causing the crash and how. Does it crash in other browsers as well?

Not sure that would be feasible, not trying to defend AMD, but they made a report tool that theoretically gives all required data back to them for analysis, its just that people are not used to reporting them.
I reported a "bug" through the tool, namely the on screen metrics loosing their size settings and reverting to 50% scaling, to my surprise, 2 weeks later in the new driver that was flagged and reported as being solved, did not really expect that. On the other hand, 4 drivers later, that same issue is back, reported again, lets see if the fix it again

The red devil uses 1.5mm thermal pads for Ram, VRM phase etc, changing thermal pads is never a good idea if you don't know the correct size, also the stock pads that Powercolor use are very soft and compress well, even with some 1.5mm thermal pad if they don't compress as well as the original ones you could still run into problems with the cold plate not making good contact with the die, i had the same problems with you with my Red Devil as regards to heat problems, i could not even add any PL or it would throttle at 110c, i took my Red devil apart put clear nail varnish over the semi conductors around the GPU and added Liquid metal to the die and cooler, this dropped the temps by 20c and can now run 400w though my card at about 96c, i did not change the thermal pads i used the original ones, you could always use thermal putty instead of pads as putty will compress fine

Your issue is basically bad mounting of the cooler, namely bad contact between the die and the coldplate. That can be for a number of reasons, not enough pressure through the 4 screws over the die, too much pressure from the pads being a wrong size and not allowing enough pressure on the die, possibly incorrect thermal paste application. As said above, the pads can be to stiff and to thick aswell.

The suggestion would be to re-use the original pads, if still available, if not, get some correct thickness soft pads, Alphacool has some ENG_1021762_Alphacool_Rise_Ultra_Soft_thermal_pad_7Wmk_100x100x1mm_Datasheet.pdf

Also, as suggested above, Liquid Metal on the die can make a huge difference, but you or the one who would apply it must really know what they are doing, or else disaster can follow incorrect application.

To tell you the exact pads to use is not easy without knowing how well they compress compared to the original ones, however i have put 2 links below one to a set of what i belive are soft 1.5mm thermal pads, the other link is to thermal putty which is what i would use if i had lost the original thermal pad as with thermal putty you should not get a bad mount as a result of incorrect thermal pads which is just one factor in a obtaining a good and successful mount

Yes but its thicker than thermal paste however you can still use a Thermal paste spatula to put in the pot and plop it on each ram chip etc or even use your fingers
