Alleged AMD AM5 Socket for Zen 4 Raphael Processors Leaks

AMD is slowly preparing to launch its next-generation processors based on the new AM5 socket. The new lineup of processors will be based on the upgraded Zen 4 architecture that is said to bring multiple microarchitecture improvements and enhancements, equaling to a possible high-performance increase. Today, according to ExecutableFix, the person who provided us with renders of AMD's upcoming AM5 socket designed for next-generation Raphael processors. As we previously reported, AM5 is doing away from PGA and switching to LGA type instead, where pins are delivered on the socket, not the CPU like we used to see with AMD processors.

The LGA-1718 socket, pictured in the renders below, looks like a simple retention mechanism, where there is one metal arm to hold the lid down under pressure. If it turns out to be true, this implementation will be a very positive upgrade over the past PGA socket found on AM4 and before. We can look forward to seeing what AMD will deliver once the launch of Raphael processors gets closer.

It's about time they switched. Better to have the pins on the cheaper part, though I guess there are other advantages to LGA or Intel would not have stuck with it so long. There is also no chance of backwards compatibility this time.

Why do you say this ?, it doesn't seem all that different from intel's sockets, with the exception of the exposed caps though...

ohhhhh like my LGA-1207 2005 Opteron 2214/18 and 2006 Opteron 8356 Socket F .... still need to find a mobo ... ahahah ... (or TRX4/sWRX8 in a more modern fashion)
(i love these CPU ... alongside my socket 940, Opty 240/250/270/275 in my collection .... and i have 2 mobo for them this time)

oh well it was server/HEDT only for AMD before hehehe

they did maintain PGA with brilliance for long enough nonetheless, not minding the change, if they keep that behaviour (glad that my AM4 system can still have a worthy upgrade if needed, but a complete change if the 3600 hold long enough, will not be a problem either.)

also for glueing things together ... Intel bashed AMD (childishly so ...) for using multiple "glued" die ... and now for their next gen they will do it ... but it's the "bee's knees" ... more "knee-jerk move" rather



edit... never bent a pin on a AMD cpu, ever since S939 till now... my last bent pin CPU was a ... 486DX (twisting and sliding works fine ... )

Bits of excess paste always end up pushed out to the sides by the cooler's mounting pressure. On LGA115x/1200 this just falls on the lower "ledge" of the IHS, and on AM4 this falls onto the ledge between the IHS and substrate, both easily removed with a IPA-soaked Q-tip.

There's no way you can clean the edges on this rumored AM5 design. Paste is just going to accumulate next to the caps. For our sakes I hope AMD extends the IHS to cover up the caps. Or, I hope the leakers eat their words entirely.

I actually very much like the LGA775-like retention mechanism (or rather more like Socket F, either way it's good). imo the lever being detached from the retention plate is better than LGA115x.

They will just make different mounting hardware that you can get. I got AM4 mounting hardware for my NH-u12S when I asked them.

I highly doubt the ihs is like that

I only had that problem with a 478 p4, after i figured it out, i havent bent a pin since.

Those are just mock-up renders. They are in no way official AMD material. But yeah, if that ends up being accurate, it's gonna suck..

hey! don't joke with that ... it's been 19yrs that i am 20 and this end of year will be the 20th year i am 20 ... not joking with that! not wishing to be 20 ... I am 20 (well ... people rarely give me 39/40 but rather 27/31 ... ) i never fast forwarded tho ahah!

I only had that problem with a 478 p4, after i figured it out, i havent bent a pin since.

ah! forgot that one .... found a old 478 system in a dump wanted to took the CPU for my collection .... forgot to twist the cooler ... pulled the cpu straight up ... although no bent pin, i was pulling too straight i guess
