Gauntlet kinda reminds of the Golden Axe games. There was a plethora of burly men wearing furry cod pieces (or was it a loin cloth, one of them two) fighting with giant swords in this period thanks to Arnold doing Conan the Barbarian. But my point being the first couple games are beloved by fans and then the series never seemed to find it's footing again. Stumbling in a fog for eternity looking to provide anything beyond empty nostalgia. I think both Golden Axe and Gauntlet franchise have suffered the same issue

Do video arcades still even exist anymore?
Unfortunately no but there are Arcade boxes available in the Used market. MAME made all of that moot though if you just want to play Games.

The problem with that Gauntlet is that it's modern and an entirely different game. I spent a few hours playing it and while fun, it's nothing like the original (like so many other things these days...)
Agreed but it is not a bad Game just pale beside other modern Action RPGs.

There are a very very few in SE Michigan, without a large rat on the sign(Chuckcheese). The last 'arcade' I recall seeing, but never been, is called Dave & Busters, still going I think.

@DeathtoGnomes

I wonder if that Gauntlet machine is still out there -- with your high score. After 16 hrs. your parents must have thought you had been kidnapped...
I actually didnt encounter it til I was in my 20s. All the old cabinet video games reset the high score list when power is cut off or manually shut off, so no not likely still out there.

It's still in business.
Maybe not where you are but it still has locations in operation.

Did your girlfriend or wife call the police wondering where you were?

Played it. Wasn't my fav though. I was more of a Dragon's Lair guy.
Or Missile Command.
Missile Command had the most unique control scheme -- I don't think I've ever seen another (arcade) game that used the ball control system. Did Missile Command influence the developers of the track ball? One of my friends used to swear by trackballs. I haven't seen a trackball in decades either.

oh man this sounds like the problem in a Seinfeld episode...George wanted to save the high score on a Frogger machine he made as a kid.

I never knew this about Gauntlet (it still wasn't enough to save Atari though):
I think it was ranked as the highest earning arcade cabinet the year it released at that too. It was likely one of the first real popular 4 player games. must have been related being able to make at least double, if not quadruple what you normally would from a 1 or 2 player cab setup. I don't think 4 player cabs were common around 1985 so they had that advantage going for them

If I remember those type of Games would be found in Theater Arcades attached to Malls. In the part of Canada I come from there was an Arcade on Yonge St that seemed to be always open and had the best Games includuing the 4 player variant.
