I sold my 2080Ti (quite unexpectedly) and I’m looking for a replacement. I’ve never spent more than 700 on a gpu and I wanted to keep as principle to be under that in general. Practically I don’t know if that’s possible anymore.

The possible answers of the poll are actually my thoughts of each one of them.
Please vote and write down if you want the reason why.

Used RTX 3090: cheap but energy and heat monster, no DLSS3, risk of purchasing a burnt out mining card.

New RTX 4070Ti: DLSS3, energy efficient, warranty but 12GB, 192bit, same performance with 3090 approx and wants 200£ more.

eBay RTX 4080: approx 200£ less than a new 4080, ugliest cards only available, No warranty most likely.

RTX 4080 FE: the card I should upgrade to but probably not worth the money compared to the other options above.

Other: whatever else makes sense of upgrading from a 2080Ti.

You can check my rig specs on the left.
I game on 3440x1440 at highest settings possible including RT.
90% Single player AAA games.
10% Battlefield.

Thanks.

If you plan on using RT at that resolution I feel the 4080 is your best option in that list of cards. Personally I would never touch a used card post a mining boom without warranty unless it was from someone I trusted so even with it's limitations I would go 4070ti new over 3090 used but I feel like even if you grab a 4070ti you'll return it and get the 4080 anyways.

I have a 2080ti in a box that was replaced by a 3080ti it's a decent enough upgrade but vs a 4080 that'd be transformative.

The 4090 in my main system was a much bigger upgrade vs the 3080ti than I was expecting though and I feel you'd be similarly floored by the performance of the 4080 irrespective of cost.

Just don't spend a dime over msrp.

You should opt for a new 4070 Ti. It's significantly faster than the 2080 Ti in ray traced games. You are also getting a newer feature set than Ampere. It's also much closer to your price ceiling.

I'm curious about the sale of your 2080 Ti. You said that you sold it unexpectedly. Did you sell it without listing it?

I just went from a 2080 to a 4070ti and it's a good upgrade, between 1.5-2x better than the 2080 on average and more than double performance on some.

I can use AA at 4k with ultra settings though I haven't thrown much at it so far it (just played through Sons of the Forest and loaded a couple other games like Death Stranding to test) it seems much more than adequate for 4k gaming without raytracing and good for 1080p gaming with raytracing.

I had it listed on eBay from September or October last year and forgot about it.
I didn’t change the price, I didn’t revise the listing to make the sell happen.

And suddenly last week, I found myself without gpu!

It happens. I sold some ECC RAM over 3 months after listing it.

I like the 4070Ti but not the 192bit/12GB. It’s obvious that the card can perform better but the memory size or bandwidth keeps it back on big resolutions.

If you have to live with the “low” performance of a 4070Ti, why don’t you take a way cheaper similarly performing card, the 3090.

Then the 3090 is not the best gaming card. Doesn’t have DLSS3 and its arch is not gaming oriented like Ada.

oh fuuuuu. I can’t decide.

4080 FE is a great move -- enough ram for a while, good performance, not a huge cost over the 4070ti -- if you keep your cards for a long time you will enjoy the 4080 imo.

The 12GB is more concerning to me than the bus width not sure what Nvidia was thinking other than huge profits. I think 16GB should be the min standard for high end cards but if you don't plan on keeping the 4070ti longer than a couple years it may be fine. Also people list 1440p as a comparison but your monitor is at least 20% more demanding. Trying to push 3.6 million pixels isn't the same as trying to push almost 5 million....

The only advantage of the 3090 is more memory. The lower memory bandwidth of the 4070 Ti is offset by its much larger L2 cache. The 4080 is 25% faster, but 50% more expensive. I don't think that's a good tradeoff. In this generation of GPUs, the best value are the 7900XT, 4070 Ti, and 7900XTX. If, as in your case, ray tracing is important, then the 4070 Ti has the best bang for the buck.

yeah its just magically losing performance on 4k for no particular reason, can't be a memory bandwidth bottleneck

The OP plays at 3440x1440. That isn't 4k. Of course, at 4k, the limited memory bandwidth and the smaller L2 cache of the 4070 Ti, shows its impact. However, even at 4k, it's faster than the 3090.

Hi,
Don't believe the 11gb 2080ti vmem made much sense when it was released especially at the price they wanted for it
So 16gb is about where it should be now days and I believe only the 4080 has it so there it is buy new and I'd pass on 30 series entirely personally.

....I have an issue with the nvidias cable. It's not flexible enough and I cannot close the side panel of the case.

So I'm about to order the Corsair Premium 600W PCIe 5.0 / Gen 5 12VHPWR PSU Cable - Fits Type-4 PSUs via Dual 8-pin PCIe - 12+4pin Connector - Mesh Paracord Sleeving - Black
1680323372224.png

The 4080 came with a 3x8pin to 1x16pin cable while the above from Corsair is 2x8pin to 1x16pin.
My psu is the SF750 (type 4 cables).
Is that ok? I mean the cable obviously works with the SF750 but I don't know if it's enough for the gpu to be connected to 2x8pin instead of 3x8pin.

If this is the paracord one, don't expect it to be more flexible than Corsair's usual paracord kits (ie. very thick and somewhat stiff). Maybe a little bit thinner. Well made though.

Just get one of them Cablemod adapters. Pretty much made just for people with SFF size constraints. Just make sure you get the right one for your use.

As for 2 or 3 x 8-pin, if 2 x 8-pin is enough for a 7900XTX, don't see why it'll cause problems for a stock 4080. Just make sure all connections are tight, and don't go unplugging/replugging the 12VHPWR over and over again like a maniac.

Biggest concern with these cards is that the connector/cable should be comfortable always. No contortionist bends, being squashed by side panel, or barely-long-enough cables. The SF750's short cables don't really lend themselves to it, and the Cablemod adapter doesn't give you the extra length of the Nvidia one. However, most of Corsair's aftermarket paracord fare is normal-length (read: obscenely long in SFF).

Thanks.

My vote goes to used 3090... just undervolt it... i ran mine 1900 mhz @ 850mv, which is stock performance, but way lower voltage... depending on game, it uses between 250 and 300 watts.

a used 3090 was my primary target but the cost of the FEs was either good but the cards were full of grease, dust, mud and radiation:)P) or bad/expensive with price similar to a new product (4070Ti).
So I picked up a new 4080 from ebay, saving a couple of pounds over the FE.
