I've taken 2000 grit to the die before to get that last bit of TIM off. I would consider that polishing.

Hm specifically I wouldnt say that the actual how too is different, but if I can give advice it would be the following

The SMD caps are miniscule and shrinking every few gens, you must be careful they dont take a lot of effort to destroy.

The other would be the heat. the formulation changes at around the same interval. Before you used to be able to pop them with a lighter, but life moves on. Dont compare temps to how they used to be. Dont be afraid to go a little hotter for a few seconds to make sure you dont wreck the core by accident.

I like to put nail polish on the SMD caps before deliding. Less chance they will pop off if bumped. Also instead of a heatgun, I'll just do Prime95 for 5 minutes. Take it out and do the delid quick. You won't hear a popping sound because the TIM didn't break. Instead it kinda slides off.

After you get the LM applied to the IHS prepare your tools once again and grab the pressure plate included. We need to have all of this ready because as seen in the photo we will be applying some glue. You can use any kind of super glue you want. I use CA glue. This is used for model kits mostly and delicate work. Its very runny by nature but does come in grades and phases like Gel, or heavy med light. Anyway, this shit sets QUICK so be ready.

You are indeed a patient and dextrous gentleman and I'm now wondering if you'd ever do this to a 7000X3D? Did it take longer to type and add all the pics or do the procedure itself? thanks! I would but I’ll never own one, and yeah it took way longer to write than it took to do.

without pictures It would probably take me 5-10min to delid. Maybe 30min for the whole process. Most of that just waiting for the solder to dissolve and picking up after I’m done.

How much liquid metal did You use?

I used 1gram but removed around 15% of it from both IHS and Die after application and now it looks like my temps are spiking and are actually higher (around +2C) than before in idle and in games spiking up to 88-90C which never happened before delid. I did something incorrectly but I am not sure what.

I also used copper IHS and thermalright contact frame. All these should make my temps go lower but it's the opposite. hmm...

I am waiting for a new batch of LM and will re-apply whole 1 gram when I get it.

With lm you apply to both surfaces, and use as little as possible while covering completely.

That's way too much. I'm not surprised your temps went up.

Use the pinhead needle attachment to suction syringe away excess and the included black spreader to get a thin film on both. You don't want puddles. Also you should be using a conformal coating or at least heat resistant plumbing/electrical tape to cover the exposed substrate around the die in case of spillage.

Yes, because all user applications are perfect and there's no such thing as missed coverage of an smd or exposed cap, or a part of the IHS isn't completely sealed. Having LM slopping around inside your CPU and potentially around your motherboard is completely fine, and it's much easier to argue that instead of just using the correct amount of LM as advised by the manufacturer for very good reasons, which limits leakage and improves temperatures.
