Changed from a non eventful 5 3600 to a 7 5700x, and ever since the PC freezes for a second sometimes, i assume it may be a coincidence by i don't believe in them. I'm still trying to figure out what is going on. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you reinstall the chipset driver, and/or do a CMOS reset with fresh BIOS settings? AMD CPUs are far from being plug-and-play like Intel ones are, unfortunately.

Also, you changed to a newer architecture, so your OS may be confused with what's going on. If the above doesn't help, a fresh OS might.

Edit: If you still have the "AMD optimized" power plan in the Windows power settings, switch back to "Balanced". Reyzen 5000 and newer CPUs don't need it.

thanks, will try all that. The only thing i did was the CMOS reset fresh BIOS settings.

Getting the same thing, new 5800X 3D build. I suspected the GPU, but it may be the CPU in light of the comments above.

Congrats! :)

The pitfalls mostly depend on your specific board, in my opinion. I'm still on AGESA 1.0.0.4 with mine, and I don't dare to update. Don't fix what isn't broken as they say. :D

The factory BIOS with the first AGESA was a mess, though, so definitely update it as soon as you put the system together.

The only weirdness I'm experiencing now is when I first enable EXPO, the board decides to match the SOC voltage to the DRAM voltage which is way too high at 1.35 V. Then, when I manually lower it to 1.1 V, boot up once, then go back to the BIOS to set it back to Auto, it magically settles at 1.2 V, which is just fine. Also, the "RAM context restore" (or whatever it's called) option that's supposed to give you quick boot times is still broken on 1.0.0.4, and I'm not sure if it's been fixed since. My system doesn't boot at all if I enable it. Disabling it is not a problem, an extra 30 seconds doesn't bother me. Other than these, smooth sailing. :)
Yeah I barely ever power off so the boot times are just expected and unlikely to bother me.

All this AM5 talk is kind of tempting.. soon.. just because we need another PC for my youngest and my wife to share, mostly for her though..

They can have this one :D

But I need a new GPU first, so my son can have my Ti.

My AM4 monsters guts will likely be coming on sale here in the forums... unless I go fully nuts and replace the 4-core skylake file server with it or something lol. That is possible.

Could you really delegate it to server use though?

But being that it is your old baby, I could see you wanting it to live out its useful, but sedentary life with you :D

Edit:

I still have my 775 system that I swore I would never get rid of.. high end stuff too.. couldn't sell it locally for 40 bucks as a system lol

I'd need to find more threaded tasks for sure. Maybe switch to gentoo again lol.

You know, you can just say you really want AM5 hardware, don't have to be so elaborate

I thought that I would be suffering from serious FOMO by now, but I've been fully embracing the ain't-broke-don't-fix life. It's a glorious and stable life.

......until Phoenix comes to AM5 then it's back to crashing all over the place for me

Its only because deep down inside I am trying to fool myself :D

I am enjoying what I have too.. a bit jelly on the GPU, but I am still ok with it for now, but the GTX 980 in the other rig wants to go to sleep :D

also went from a 3600 to a 5700x, no issues, maybe will upgrade GPU depending on 4060ti prices, but likely will wait until 50 series, still happy with performance overall, dont really need the latest and greatest, as i dont play that much demanding stuff, hell in half the games i play my GPU fans dont even kick in :D

The fear of instability is part of why I am hanging on to my good ol' AM4 kit, at least for a bit. An "abort mission, this sucks!" fallback kit never hurts.

That's why I almost never sell anything. :D

I buy X for my main PC, then it becomes a HTPC part, then a fallback piece, and later, it isn't worth to sell anymore, so it just sits on the shelf in my ever-growing collection. This is the circle of life.

Speaking of stability, found great way to verify CO stability. Open a 40mb tiff and zoom it in to 1000% and out to 2% in IrfanView. I would get hard restarts whenever CO was adjusted too much on one of the cores.

not a bad idea, it rapidly changes between load and no load, so the cores would get whammed in and out of the power states

To the people with issues: reinstall the Chipset drivers, and after a BIOS clear make sure to load optimised defaults before enablling XMP. I saw some weirdness changing between a 5800x and 5800x3D and simply put a clear wasnt enough - you NEED to load the defaults too (or even re-flash the BIOS), or settings from the old CPU can remain and mess things up

I had all the OC settings visible and surviving many reboots, but didnt work, or didnt work correctly - but since they shouldnt have existed in the first place, it was super clear what had happened

It makes me wonder if this is part of the reason we have things like the hard to reproduce "bugs" people encounter or performance issues some reviewers have on ryzen

It could be, yes.
Optimised defaults has zero guarantees to be the exact same settings as what a CMOS clear loads - we have no way of knowing

Clear CMOS
bios flashback/update (Optional)
load optimised defaults

Most problems should be gone (again, the 5800x to x3D was a super clear way to see this, since half a dozen overclocking settings didnt vanish til that third step)

On a likely related note, bios flashback can behave weird too - It wouldnt work for me on a brand new b550 motherboard until I did a CMOS clear first, then pushed the button. It had never had a CPU installed, period. (Just mobo, CPU and USB drive with a convenient LED to flash when in use - that's it)

My x570-F also had some weirdness there where bios flashback simply would not work without a CMOS clear before each attempt. It made me realise it was more than a specific board or brand issue, and something odd with how ryzen does bios updates in general that could absolutely trip users up, even experienced ones.

I never noticed it before the TPM/secureboot changes for W11, but it may have been around forever and people like myself just kept trying til it worked - many people have had issues with flashback, but it's very easy to assume they just missed a step and blame the user (formatting the USB correctly, unzipping, renaming file, etc)

Oh! found out why my DRAM clocks read weird: it's a result of core isolation in windows after i enabled virtualization in the bios

Yup I've had that, now I just stick the BIOS file on an 8GB USB stick and do the flashing from within the UEFI BIOS itself works every time without fail and no need to clear the CMOS every time either

When i flash mine, on the 1st boot it always a black screen and of course you wait and wait just in case but it just stays black, a little nerve racking for sure. and to get it to boot right you have to do the cmos battery again.

Oh yes, most definitely. I had that happen to me after I loaded the latest UEFI for my motherboard that had AGESA 1.0.0.6 in it.

One game I play has a 30% performance increase with the 5800x3d. I am eager to see how these perform.
I can get a 5800x3d for $280 right now. I am going to buy it and see if that 30% in my one game with low performance actually improves 30%. If the performance is really that good I will sell the 5950x.

Idea sounds flawed.

I'd consider picking one up for $280. Is this a special going on somewhere, or a local sale?

Idea sounds flawed.

The 5800x3d kicked the crap out of the 5950x for gaming.
