So did half of China just get hardware surveys all at once or they signed up on Steam in one go? Also you said once you connect to the internet, that's not the same as users getting random surveys! So maybe stop digging?

Maybe a new intern at Steam broke the Chinese hardware survey fix. :laugh: Or the "Great Firewall of China" (yep, that's really the official name lol) broke and they could all connect to the global Steam network without VPN. Pretty sure it was something unforeseen that caught even Steam dev's off guard, lol.

The power consumption is quite good for this card. The price is...less so.

I wonder what AMD's response to this card will be?

So 26 percent faster at 1440p, 20 percent more expensive.

That's a single digit increase in perf/dollar. Ugh. Wait for the 5070 ;) If you have to buy new, it makes sense I suppose, but it makes more sense to wait.

It's actually worse, because street prices of Ampere cards are of course lower now, not at MSRP, which "performance per dollar" chart takes into consideration - so RTX 4070 is actually worse than most previous generation cards now. But it doesn't matter to the fanboys (or as they call themselves now, "realists").

"Moore's law is dead" Jensen said, and so is Gordon Moore, since March 24, 2023.

Outdated irrelevant chart that comes from the... same source as I posted. Techspot is run by the HUB guys, in case you didn't know.
How is it outdated, it's just current Newegg prices instead of MSRP

So a brand new 2023 12GB Card that costs probably 700-750€ in reality loses to a 16GB 6800XT which costs a lot less used and even ~150-200€ less brand new.

That's at best stagnation.
What you are completely forgetting here is that the card will save you a lot of energy compared to the others. With my usage and living in Germany (which you do too I would assume from your Name) I would save between 50€ and 70€ a year. Plus with DLSS the card easily outperforms the 6800XT and at 1440 you don't need more than 12 GB if you play games that are well made.

Right, I mistook it for another looking quick (I'm currently playing Fallout 76 :p), but still my initial point stands, no matter how much scorn Nvidia deserves their way lately, AMD's last gen product just isn't better or an equal to this GPU. It's an inferior product which must be sold cheaper to make up for its rather significant shortcomings.

The leap in power consumption alone isn't something to be ignored. The Navi 21 cards look bizarrely inefficient next to this thing.

I’m curious what tangible benefits this card has over a 6800xt. Things like DLSS/frame gen don’t appeal to me but if i remember right nVidia had better nvenc encoding and streaming support which I do occasionally dabble in. Is this still the case?
It saves you a lot of power. With my usage and location it costs about the same as a 6800XT but would save me about 70€ a year in energy consumption.

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.
I think Nvidia nailed the pricing with this one at consumer's expense. More expensive than expected, weaker than expected but not much competition around that price. This product is priced to milk margins, not to generate positive hype.
It has zero competition right now so you'd only buy it if you are impatient.
Stocks of 6800XT have been going back up in price as supply dries up. Stocks of RTX 3080 dried up a few months ago already.
Battlemage isn't here. RDNA3 isn't at this price tier yet.

Here is some perspective of the EU market for you

No wonder AMD isn't releasing any mid range products, their old, cheap to manufacture cards can more than handle Nvidia's mid range BS.

If you intentionally overlook every shortcoming, setback and problem AMD's older GPUs have, yes.

Being worse at RT, media handling, encoding, at over double the power consumption and subject to Radeon driver shenanigans many of which have driven even diehards (speaking for myself here) away?

Pass.

Would do the same.
Right now the best deal in germany might be the 6800XT 569€ or 6950XT for 649€ (same model). The 3080 10gb starts at 740€...the 3080 12GB at 867€...
The next tier with 7900XT (829€) or 4070Ti (889€) is too high. I'd say 1% higher price per 1% performance is alright. Coming from the 6800XT that is ~700€ for the 7900XT...
The 4070 should also be 500-600€, but it will start at 659€ with tax.
Cheapest 6800XT I can find in Germany is 600€ and cheapest 6950XT is 670€. The 6800XT has roughly the same performance in gaming as the 4070 but worse performance in everything else. The 4070 would also save me 70€ a year in energy cost. So the decision isn't really as easy as just comparing gaming performance and sale price and calling it a day.

And the Nvidia card will be 70€ cheaper after 1 year when you factor in energy consumption.

I am only looking at AMD's perspective, as most of their shortcomings from RDNA2 remain in RDNA3 aside from media encoding.

Besides, their shortcomings are not as serious as you imply.
the 6000 series does not have power consumption problems as all cards (aside from 6950XT, maybe.) don't need massive coolers and can operate with 650W power supplies most mid range systems will have.
If you still turn on RT at that level, you are only letting go of about 15% performance with AMD, which I would not consider earth shattering in any way.

What the 4070 has going for it is fake frames and encoding. But a lot of people will overlook those in favor of 10% more raster, especially at the mid range where it counts more.

In any case, AMD will eventually launch something as well. My point is that they don't need to rush because the 4070 is not very impressive.

That is presuming:

1. Your power supply can handle a 300-400W GPU (at sub-200W, the 4070 will easily run on more modest PSUs, very important for SFFs);
2. Provided your power supply has the capacity, ensure that it can handle the transients and spikes that a high-wattage GPU will produce (which is another problem in itself);
3. Your PC's cooling can manage the 6800 XT's high wattage (the 4070 will exhaust less hot air inside the case due to its lower power consumption);
4. Energy costs remain constant (they are ballooning up in Europe, and in a general trend upwards worldwide)
5. You absolutely do not care about having features such as DLSS and the NVIDIA ecosystem and;
6. You absolutely do not care about resale value in the future;
7. You buried your head in the sand, set your foot down and absolutely refuse to accept that DX12 Ultimate and raytraced games are here to stay - with ideological fervor

Then yeah buying leftover stock of 6800 XT makes sense

15% frame rate loss on average with RT on is something not even Ampere will manage. Usual frame rate hits on Navi 21 are in the 40-45% range, unless you use the lightest raytracing options possible. This becomes significantly more severe if it's a high resolution where the GPU is bandwidth starved and/or cache hit rate is reduced.

Regarding RDNA 3: it is exceptionally unusual that AMD, the supposedly consumer friendly company, hasn't serviced the highest volume markets in the midrange, and i'll call it: that reason isn't that the midrange is supplied by previous generation overstock. It's because if the 7900 series are anything to go by... they have a stinker in their hands.

Yeah exactly. Factoring in a necessary PSU upgrade for an AMD GPU makes the price a lot worse. And then running costs makes it even worse, not just while gaming but also idle and especially multi monitor.

Except it will pass the 6800XT market share in a matter of WEEKS, literally…

Why AMD users are always like that ?
Who would choose a 6800XT over a 4070 ?
Popularity I'd NOT synonymous with superiority....if it was, we'd all agree that McDonald's has the highest quality food because they sell the most of it.
