Planned obsolescence is a part of life itself, the original implementation and without it, there would be no life and, more importantly, no evolution. Sound familiar with consumer products?

If one has a dozen products
  • Car
  • Computers
  • Fridge
  • Heating
  • Dish Washer
  • Washing machine
  • Garbage disposal
  • Dryer
  • Wi-Fi
  • ...
and each lasts maybe 5 years, then one has to repair or replace something every few months; so each repair I try to do right so they last a good bit longer.
  • Use long life oil, batteries, spark plugs and bulbs in the car
  • Rebuild the computer supplies with top grade capacitors and oil the fans preemptively
  • Garbage disposal with stainless interior
  • LED bulbs
  • ...
But I do pick up old and dumped stuff that can be rebuilt, not so much as to save the environment but for fun and to save money.

And for summary, economies and GDP do not expand if products last for 20 years. Where would companies get investment dollars if no products are being made because the current ones last so long. For example, who would invest in opening a new factory and train new workers knowing that the factory would be under-producing after the initial run due to life cycle durability? And what about the suppliers to that factory and all the associated supply side and logistics micro economies?

I think the question is not whether there is obsolescence, I think the better question is what would a national/local economy look like without it, specifically the towns and city centers where the items are produced and services rendered?

I think you can paint that picture pretty quick with basic analytics and readily available numbers.

A most excellent observation; same with birth growth.

The young pay the pension of the old, so there comes a point where a country like France or Japan can't sustain a population decline; the system depends on growth despite declining resources.

Throw the tin foil hat on. No company is going to admit planned a obsolescence.

Apple might be the easiest to see in action. When new phone come out, so does a new IOS. Apple also updated the app store to only work with the newer IOS. Effectively killing any use of older iphones, ipad and laptops that can't be updated (for whatever made up reason). I'll never buy a apple product again after my iPhone 4S become obsolete once the iphone 6 came out. Couldn't download new apps and some of the ones I had stopped working due to "needing a update".
I completely disagree with this. Apple is by far the leader in device support. No other mobile device on the market gets support as long as Apple provides to theirs. iPhone 6S got 7 years of updates and iPad Air 2 got 8 years, just as an example. They only drop support when they are finally too slow or don't have enough RAM. Even Google and their first party phones only get 3 years of software and 2 additional for security patches. And even after a device no longer gets new releases it's not uncommon to see Apple push a security patch for a long out of date version. iPhone 4 and 4S were unfortunate because they were supported for too long though. iPhone 4 definitely was not fast enough for iOS 7.

You mention when iPhone 6 came out you could no longer download apps, but iPhone 6 shipped with iOS 8 and iPhone 4S can be updated all the way to iOS 9? Developers only drop support for older versions of iOS, not specific hardware. Did you not update your phone? Regardless, that comes down to the app developer and not Apple. The only time Apple made a change to affect apps like that was in iOS 11 when they dropped support for 32bit apps on the App Store, yet that was still 4 years after their first 64bit iOS device launched

Why does Apple glue things shut?

Just to replace the clock battery on an iMac is hell.

I don't know if I'm too biased of the 'lightbulb theory', but aren't we impressed by the lifetime of LED bulbs just because we have gotten used to the heavily manipulated lifetime of incandescent bulbs?
I know how they work so... not impressed or unimpressed. Been using the same bulb in my desk lamp since 2018 or so, but it's a 12V running at exactly 11.4V due to the power supply drop. The bulb itself, the glass, is already becoming a bit dark after so much use. Thermionic emission and all.

There's a bunch of theory but undervolting by about 5% greatly increases the filament's life without reducing the brightness. Soft starting the lamp also greatly increases its life and can be done with simple electronic components.

Is that truly a manipulation? Living in an area with a stable 230V power, I can say that most incandescent bulbs last(ed) very long compared to their stated 1000h lifetime. Meanwhile, I would call LED bulb 10,000-30,000h lifetimes heavily manipulated - about as heavily as compact fluorescent bulb lifetimes.
It's not manipulated but not entirely true, in an electronic light source only SOME of the components can last for 30K hours under specific conditions, if you look closely at the box it'll say something like 30K hours if you use it 2 hours a day with a single switch-on, in practice that'll never happen, thus it won't last for that much time.

Without taking overvoltage into consideration another issue is design, if you have a ceiling or pendant holder and fit one of these bulbs you'll be constantly overheating the electronics inside, same if you put them inside an enclosed fitting, "ceiling boob" type.
Most of those lamps suck, BUT the ones that don't suck are rarely mentioned, and those are low voltage DC ones, you need a transformer to run them but since they're only a bunch of LEDs inside a glass bulb they *might* last for 10K hours, granted you don't overvolt them.

My 5% rule applies, with low wattage DC bulbs is easier to drop the voltage using a resistor and fit the transformer inside the switch box for easy access.

exactly. Apple makes repairs nearly impossible on purpose. You don't need a glass backing to a phone and you don't need to glue the glass to the screen, which is serialized to the MB and cannot be replaced separately. So crack the screen and you get an entire new internals of a phone...because industrial glue..

Don't know why my LED lights died in less than 2 years.
You might have poor powerline delivery, you might have bought a bad lot, maybe just poor quality... There could be many reasons that yours died early. I am solidly with @Shrek in that I have LED "bulbs" that have been running(8 to 9 hours per day) since they first came out, 13years ago. No consumer quality incandescent bulb made in the last 70 years can or will last that long and CCFL "bulbs" can last years, but I don't have any that still work. All but a few of my LEDs work. This is one kind of product that delivers on it's promise, generally.

Planned obsolescence is a part of life itself, the original implementation and without it, there would be no life and, more importantly, no evolution. Sound familiar with consumer products?
There's a VERY serious difference, which you seems to be glossing over. Organic life wears down because of the environment it lives in. Products we make could last as long as we do or longer, when PROPERLY engineered. Companies don't do that because then no one would every replace anything.

One is natural, the other is not.

LED are better than Incandescent Bulbs in Energy efficiency. However they are not good in all environments

That problem and the few others LEDs have are easily solved. For example, heaters for the street lights. Very simple, inexpensive and easy to install.

Everything, everywhere, all the time, all at once, all things electronic become/go obsolete or borked...

The real question is: Why does it have to be this way....

And the answer is: Greed :(
Greed of the manufacturer, or greed of the consumer?

I mean, sure companies have a goal of selling more and more, but people (especially in the West) have a tendency of expecting more features, processing power, etc. from new devices year by year. You can't keep adding stuff constantly with limited development time and expect everything to work properly from day zero. The world has to slow down, both on corporate and consumer levels, imo, and focus on quality and longevity instead of more speed and features. We have people sitting in their brand new $50k Teslas, crying that we're destroying the planet by overusing its resources, posting all their negativity towards the topic on their iPhone 59357397s, which they're gonna swap for the newer one next year so that they can cry some more with bigger processing power. Who's overusing Earth's resources, then? The one who buys the newest iPhone and Tesla every year, or me, who uses a cheap Samsung and keeps driving a gas guzzling Ford Fiesta ST until it eventually dies one day?

But the one who tries to make his gadgets/clothes/shoes/furniture or even house last longer is at least to an extent smarter. Which is not to say that I support upgrading/changing things frequently, I absolutely don't.

That's my point. Just because you have the newest gadgets, it doesn't mean they'll last longer. The battery in the Galaxy S22 Ultra Super Plus Whatever Uber Edition will die exactly when the one in my A22 will.

That is an exception, not the rule.. That bulb is extremely dim, made of tungsten and was a very high quality product. It has everything going for it. Mass produced bulbs did not. Mass produced LED lighting however is of much high quality by default because they have to be or they don't pass QC checks.

my Bluetooth headphones lives longer than apple. it's exceptionally immortal. cost me 2$ for the mod.

Yeah, and I remember they did this too: Apple to Pay $113 Million for Slowing Down Old IPhones (businessinsider.com)

Whether there is any truth or argument to be made as to why they did slow them down, I suppose we will never know.

Edit: I've got an iPhone 7 here still going but battery is not so great after about 7 years. Was purchased new. I'd say it's done its job. Will probably upgrade soon. Been a good phone so can't complain but the iPhone 6+ plus I had before that only lasted 2 years iirc. Screen died.

Both, because I use a 2006 phone and drive a CNG car that can burn biogas as well. gottem.

My conclusion as ever: everybody is using Earth's resources! If we didn't, we wouldn't eat, wouldn't breathe. That's just unreasonable. We won't solve Earth's problems by pointing fingers and having no lives. :)

The problem with LEDs is that they flicker. Some people are especially sensitive for it.

Intensity can be controlled by pulsing, and if too slow it is noticable.

I have a bike LED light that has two brightnesses; I don't normally notice the flickering unless it is raining, then I see the rain as dashed lines.

Who has the money, and who wants the money. Who wants to spend to get the shiny, and who wants to oil the squeaky old.

Depending on the topic and task, I do both. My PC towers are old. My laptop is newer, 10th gen intel. I update the components of both, but don't want to completely replace either. I do buy my wife newer laptops every few years, starting way back when we got married. She doesn't "play" with computers. She uses them.

Phones get software updates. Wireless technology improvements usually drive updates on the hardware.

Just a start.

Good luck

Additionally, do you know what industry/business invented planned obsolescence? A good topic to research, too
Hi all, light bulbs industry...as in the beginning they were so good as able to last more than 100 year. Not good for the business.

Everybody, thank you so much for participating in the discussions!
It is very much appreciated!
Will your master's thesis, once it's finished, be available to the public? Please let us know if and when it is.

(In Slovenia for example, all of them are, at least from public universities.)

If the thesis is worth a passing grade (God, I hope it is!!) Then it should be publicly available through the university. If it becomes public, I will of course let you know :)
Assuming you don't mind DOXing yourself of course.
