Guys, I have a problem. My video card is not using the correct PCI Express.

Here's the setup:

1) i7 13700k
2) Asus Rog z690-A Strix DDR4
3) RTX 4080 Galax
4) Source: 850W XPG Core Reactor

Look at the picture of GPU-Z and NVIDIA:

Actions I took:

1) Remove the video card and put it back
2) Clean PCI-Express connector with electrical contact cleaner
3) Update the BIOS
4) Update the Driver

Do you use a riser cable?

Is it always x2?

Do you have another PC and does it show up fine then?

Did it ever work in this machine?

I don't use rise cable. I connect the video card directly to the motherboard.

I have another computer, but the video card does not fit on it. I even put another video card in the computer with the problem and it appears the same way.

There is nothing wrong with your system or video card, it just switch back to slower PCIE lanes because you not use it at moment.

With the question mark in GPU-Z it will do a graphics test and then you will see it switch to FULL PCIE.

This happened after I installed a new watercooler and installed the Armory Crate.

Is there any fact connected to this?

I already ran 3D mark and GPU-Z stays the same

I dont think they go down to 2x. I think x4 is the PCI-E step down speed. Do they allow step down to x2?

Then you either use the wrong PCI slot, or bios setting wrong. Remember you can't have another card placed in an other X16 slot on your motherboard. If you do the lanes will be shared with your video card.

My motherboard has three x16 slots, if i use the other places and a video card, then all available x16 lanes will be shared with the tree slots.

In my system if i not use the video card it switches back to X16 1.1. So it must be some bios setting i guess.

See, I have only one video card plugged into the PCI Express slot in the image below.

In the BIOS, where could I configure correctly?

I think you are using the wrong slot, it should be in the upper slot. I think your card is now places in pciex16 1.2 and it should be in 1.1.

My motherboard is also ASUS and video card should ALWAYS be placed in the first slot.

Strange, are you sure you tested it with the question mark? It should switch to full pcie then. If not, either bios setting.

If not BIOS then there's a motherboard problem.

Yes I tested.
Where should I change it in the BIOS to make it work correctly?

In the BIOS go to ADVANCED/ONBOARD DEVICES CONFIGURATION, there a lot of settings, it should be on auto or default. If you are not sure, choose in the bios for default settings, save and restart. It that all not helps you, then there's a problem with your MOBO.

Would any M.2 NVME drives cause the primary 16 lane PCIe slot to lose lanes?

Here's a screenshot in default it should more or less look like this. It's a different motherboard so some setting will be different or not there for you.

No it has nothing to do with that, that uses other lanes directly from CPU or chipset. You can place anything you want, it has no influence on your video-card:).

I have two NVME drives in motherboard. Is that it?

My BIOS is ROG. Only GEN 1, GEN 2, GEN 3, GEN 4 and GEN 5 appear. In Bifurcation mode do I put Auto or X8?

No your NVMe uses other lanes, not shared with your video-card. It should all be in auto mode. Don't use other slot's available, are they empty and just a video card?

Disable PCIE express power saving options in the bios in case they are breaking the negotiation speed. There is probably 3 or 4 of these options, to keep it simple disable them all. Might be labelled as ASPM.

You said you did use another video-card and same result? If all settings here does not change anything, i guess there's a problem with your MOBO.

Could even be broken or damaged pins in the CPU socket.

Any chance there's damage on your card near the socket area? Other card at x2 too? Then it's your motherboard. Also check inside your CPU socket. The lanes from the graphics card go straight into your CPU

Another possibility is damaged traces on the motherboard going to the video-card slot, check that too.

If all okay then i think this will be an RMA case...

Is there a possibility that the problem is processor? Remembering that I used another processor on the motherboard and even so it stayed at X2. I would like to know if it can be both, both motherboard and processor.
