The funny thing is the same thing was said around when the 2080TI launched. I am glad they were wrong. If you don't think that Sony and Microsoft are not working with AMD on their next Gen GPU you would also be wrong. Microsoft is buying as many Game houses as it can and that can only be good for AMD. As much as Nvidia likes to fog the space with accoutrements it has been true for the last 2 generations that the only place Nvidia beats AMD is indeed the highend. Of course they went to AMD's own supplier to jump them but I digress. The fact that the biggest thing for me in Gaming is actually AMD's newest APUs on Desktop has nothing to do with Ray Tracing. Indeed my argument still holds a Game that would benefit from RT appreciation would TWWH but performance is more important than extra math to make it shine better.
While we focus on the DIY space there are still plenty of people buying PS5s and Xbox1s. The price and availability have stabilized and there are some killer Games launching around Xmas that will influence sales. In the meantime the 7800XT has been a success no matter how many people cry about it. You can thank Nvidia for that too because the 4060TI 16GB proved that if the GPU is not fast enough, the VRAM buffer does not matter.
Now I am here happier than a pig in s%^$^% with my PC and have been really getting into my library. I have been playing the heck out of Forza 7 but lament the 72 FPS lock. I finished Exoprimal so I have been getting 158 FPS average at 4K in Aliens Fire Team Elite. OF course all of that is supported by Wood Elves all Legendary Lords Immortal Empires Campaign in TWWH3 and Dune Spice Wars is better in some ways than Starship Troopers but not as fun. Funny thing is when I play CP 2077 I am stuck on that Mission where you have to sneak into the warehouse but always end up getting dealt by the robot. The fact that the Game is butter smooth and already beautiful is real. I will always say though that Ascent has a more detailed CP setting in it's World.
AMDs focus is money and there's little money in the PC gaming market for AMD. Look at Steam Hardware Survey, barely any higher end AMD GPUs listed.
AMD wants some of that sweet AI money that Nvidia gets. Nvidia makes billions upon billions of dollars on AI, Enterprise and Gaming. Nvidia pretty much owns all those markets.
Consoles, sure, but MS/Sony is the true winners here, not AMD. Nvidia have Nintendo anyway. Switch sold like crazy (easily beating PS5 and XSX) and Switch 2 will get Nvidia RTX + DLSS as well. I bet Nvidia makes more per chip than AMD does per PS/XB chip. Because Nvidia would not bother otherwise.
AMD will always be the small player. A player that relies 100% on TSMC. Nvidia used Samsung for 3000 series and still beat AMD while using an inferior process.
I don't hate AMD. I have several AMD CPUs and APUs in my house but CPUs is AMDs prime focus. Not GPUs. They are losing more and more marketshare here. They have inferior features, lacking RT perf and only focus on rasterization. Could not care less till they improve their features.
Their MCM approach even failed for GPUs. Nvidia wins on performance per power while using monolithic which is just sad. Lets hope AMDs MCM GPUs are getting better over time...
