Nah - I completely get it.

Also, I don't think all of us should define ourselves by the job that we do. Not wasting 8 hours of your day on something that you hate is important, but having career goals and making those goals a reality isn't the only way of enjoying what you do. Work satisfaction comes in many different shapes and forms.

There are many parameters that could make your working day better even tho you don't really like your day-job. (like kind, honest people. Overall environment can also make a big difference imo).

I would say those are even more important than the job itself. I'd rather endure a crappy job with good people than have an objectively good job with a-holes all around me.

I've seen a few comments on here from folks that reached a certain age and feel like they have no direction or idea what they want to do. After spending decades doing this or that job, I finally decided to go to college at 41 years old and have since graduated and become an archaeologist. Now at 51, I'm finally happy with my career choice and actually look forward to getting up for work lol. To all those who feel like they have spent too much time trying to find themselves and feel pressured to make a permanent decision, I say it's never too late to try something new in a completely different direction than anything you've ever done before. You're only over the hill if you let yourself be, and all it takes is the courage and motivation to make a change. When you're ready for a new adventure, you'll know it. So don't beat yourself up for not hitting this or that milestone at whatever age. It took me almost half a century to decide what I wanted to be when I grew up lol.

I nearly became an environmental engineer myself. It's taught as sub-discipline of civil engineering here (although mechs and chem grads also got a foot in). First two job interviews of my life as a graduate, didn't land either.

In retrospect, it was for the best. I really suck at chemistry, and can't for the life of me memorize these long, stupid names they give these endless numbers of microbes!
I do miss the lab work though. Fun to do, and surprisingly even more fun to teach (did so during a short stint as a TA).

I keep America's trucks on the road working for a local logistics company. Journeyman lead diesel technician and certified in Freightliner and Detroit engines and transmissions. DOT certified also. Welder and Fabricator. Been in the business over 23 years now not including wrenching on the side or before doing it professionally. Well versed in pretty much everything. Have vast knowledge of carburetors, OB1 and OB2 engine and transmission diagnostics and repairs. Before I end the carreer will probably go for Master Technician certs, though I don't need them.

Edit for additional comment. Our company has hired a few Yellow employees as drivers since that logistics company shut down. It was a surprise to everyone in the Chicago land terminals, nobody knew it was coming. RIP Yellow.

Well, here I am @ 72 years young and have been a Consulting Engineer for 25 years in the building game then moved on to IT for 23.5 years with my current employ as a WAN Network Engineer/Specialist.

You'd think I would have retired at my age, but no, I don't want to go down that slippery slope into the graveyard.

The one thing that keeps me going is the 100K per year salary + riding my 1098S Ducati !!!!

If I had a 100k salary, I'd save 80k a year and retire before I reach 50.

However, myself, my team and I like to think the company too, do our best to not fluff around. So far, I'm loving it.

Joined the team earlier this year after finishing up 5 years with a local computer hardware retailer in a similar but more junior role.

I used to think like this. But since moving to my new role earlier this year, it changed me.

For sure, I have friends for life from my old workplace, but looking back, I feel I probably stayed with that team for too long when I look at the success of many others that graduated uni at the same time. Maybe I shouldn't compare myself to others like that, I don't know

Maybe. All I know is, success in career doesn't interest me the slightest. It used to, but then I noticed how much others in the business had to graft to get and stay where they are, and how little they earn in comparison. Of course, they earn more than I do, but not so much more to make it worth the trouble. I'd much rather live a peaceful, comfortable life than break myself to earn more.

Edit: Happiness is not a list of achievements, imo. It's about being happy with what you have.

I couldn't agree more with most of what you have said there especially that last sentence, however for me, being married with (at the time) 2 young daughters I naturally wanted the very best for my family so I made a choice to work my butt off and do as well as I could to provide for them in what was my then primary career in the military. Throughout that journey yes I worked myself really hard, got promoted loads of times, did well but I also grew significantly as a person, because of that growth when I look back at myself the "achievement" is not my main satisfaction but where it led to in my own journey and development.

I think we all need to challenge ourselves once in a while and move out of our comfort zones otherwise it can be easier to stagnate.

I completely agree.

All I'd add is that chasing career goals isn't the only way to move out of one's comfort zone. Family is, and always should be, a significant driving force, of course.

I have been out of the investment casting game for a bit, but 3D printing doesnt have the GDT numbers that a good tooling does. We (PCC) had a couple SLA parts that didnt quite work. Then we switched over to wax, and new problems showed up, as the part had to change due to complexity. Not sure if you ever ventured to the structural side, if your foundry had one, but the parts there are waaay more complex than blades and segments. Our biggest part was 1200 pound pour with 600 pound ship weight.

Also, 3D surface texture cant touch the smoothness of a hand sanded tooling. I think your techniques for dipping are still in use.

very well said. a lot of my peers are literally living to work. sure they get paid more than i do, but they lose their time to work. India doesnt have very good labor protection so work hours are non existent. people work for 12-14 and even 16hrs. Some people are inefficient in how they work but some actually put in that much work.

But they dont get time to reap their rewards. yeah thats not for me. As long as i get paid enough to do the things i love (cars, bikes, buying computer parts

) , i am content.
