That right there is what you call in the most technical of terms... Broken. lol
Very broken. #2 was at 250 psi. I didn't bother with the rest of them lol.

Take some measurements and see if we can get away with a set of rings, rods and mains. Send the head out.

Driver likely started it at -10 and WOT to build air pressure. Code of concern, oil riffle pressure out of range low.

At least it still turns....

Gotta love diesels. I was watching a couple of the mechanics at work tear down one of those 2000 series allison 9-speeds. no thanks man. I'll stick to the IT.

My brother is a mechanic/technician as well. I remember the place he worked had an old 2-stroke detroit deisel water truck, what a racket that thing made lol.

Propeller is 15'-10" in diameter. Overhauling that currently.

Thankyou. It certainly is, all the cooking and cleaning, shopping, helping her bath, putting up with her strange behaviour sometimes(she has bipolar disorder, an normal pressure hydrocephalus) I have had to section her twice. Taking her to doctors when needed in her wheelchair, and picking up and giving meds every week. I do enjoy my PC and my motorbike though.

Are those cast pieces? I used to work in a few different foundries, but never worked anything that big

Explain how you overhaul that!! Hell, what is it? A prop for a ship?

Looks to me like an impeller for a hydro turbine

Edit..and this is welding work for rehab/overhaul, if I know anything about metal, but I hope @mechtech is writing a manual for us relating to his job/career/living.

Hydro Unit. 60,000HP 107ft hd, 138.4rpm. First large vertical unit overhaul for me. I'm just minor mechanical engineering support, the big work is handled by OEM/Trades/Contractors.

Usually pull them apart after 25 years or so. Usually rebabbitt the plain bearings, hone servos and put in new rings (think 2ft dia hydraulic cylinder but low pressure 300psi), blasting, painting, alignments, etc. Machine the edges and oring grooves, lots of nde work, etc. New bearing coolers, brake pads, anything else that's EOL after 25 years........

hmmm
here is a good cross section example, a bit different in that guide vanes, we typically call wicket gates, and usually there are stationary vanes around the wicket gates

Most of it is plate (headcovers). The shaft is a forging, I would assume the prop blades and hub are forged as well. There are some cast parts though.......see the "bottom ring".

Reminds me of the show Engineering Marvel's, this kind of thing is referred to as a Super Structure. That thing is massive!

Thank you for the cross section images. I find this kind of stuff fascinating!

So what about the bearings? Do have any pictures of those?

Probably on my work phone. Turbine is a 2-pc split shell guide bearing with oil grooves, sits in a bath. Generator has a thrust block on end of shaft, does dual duty, bottom has thrust bearing and guide bearings around it, I think 18 or so all individually adjustable.

Thrust is similar to this

Turbine guide similar to this but babbitt liner.......maybe 38" dia. journal........I think.

Such great pressures to deal with while rotating. And this oil type is particular to compression if I read that correctly? Min oil thickness decreases continously with load. The stresses sound immense!

But I mean that bearing looks like it's in good shape. I can't see any damages.

That was a random bearing pic. Looks like plastic liner. This one is Babbitt metal like a plain bearing in a gas or diesel motor but not forced oil just a bath. Not really any pressure since vertical. Bearing clearance about 10 thou radial and iso 46 weight hydraulic oil. Basically a hydrodynamic plain bearing.
