Doubling the fps from 60+ is still a legit use case, high refresh monitors have more or less become the norm. You can also just turn settings down to get there, if you can't reach 60 fps no matter what I guess you shouldn't be surprised this isn't working that well.
I don't need to double 60 FPS. That's why I have FreeSync (that rages between 48-144 Hz on my monitor).

AMD has its own latency reduction feature called "Anti-Lag+," which is only available for the RX 7000 series GPUs, and thus wasn't applied in our testing as we're using a NVIDIA RTX 3080 GPU.
Sorry but what about testing AMD software on ... AMD GPUs... i don't understand here...

Allot of bickering over a new technology. I didn't hear the same when Nvidia released a similar technology, but I guess it's understandable when Nvidia employed hoards of trolls to spread they're advertising. After all money are what matters, and they are sitting on a mountain of dollars. And DLSS 3 also doesn't work well on low end hardware such as rtx 4060.

I have to say, I'm more than a little disappointed that this new AMD tech is being tested on Nvidia hardware only. It's impressive enough that AMD allows it to run on other vendors' hardware. I'm surprised it works at all without those companies (Nvidia/Intel) spending some time optimizing their drivers to play nice.
lol, yeah. I'm not suggesting that the article isn't useful or interesting, but I can't quite shake the image in my head of someone writing a review for DLSS using an AMD card, "conclusion-wtf it doesn't work at all."

To be honest, I think DLSS FG is just as useless as FSR FG is.

AMD even said it runs better on RDNA3, I remember reading a quote a few days ago.

So yeah, not sure why it is being tested on nvidia, regardless, I think it looks great, I just watched maxus video at 4k... and I see none of the issues he talked about regarding the magic stuff being blurry, all looked the same to me. I think some people are just overly picky. I'll take those double frames thanks.

It really is useless. VRR almost solved these problems with LFC under 45FPS. Frame rate does not matter unless under 45FPS and LFC is there for that. Fluidity matters not fake frames. Now if they could improve latency at 60FPS and below and improve LFC then that would be better.

This. Also, not working properly with a low base frame rate. These make the technology completely useless.
Bad take. Framegen is useful for people who have a high refreshrate monitor (144 and up), got significantly less before that who want to get their monitors refreshrate.
In this particular case I can go from ~100fps in Starfield to 165fps.

I'm not saying it's going to be useful to everyone, but I can certainly see some uses for it.

Why use a nvida card in these test?

cause its a bad test. AMD even said it runs better on RDNA3, they just aren't dicks like Nvidia keeping it proprietary.

In this particular case I can go from ~100fps in Starfield to 165fps.

what resolution, gpu are you using? does New Atlantis feel smoother to you overall now when you turn this on?

I haven't tried it yet, I'm waiting for it to come out of beta.
But if you really want to know I'm willing to test it.
I'm using an 7900XTX on 1440P.

It works fine also when you are 40 ish range so it's completely not pointless. Yes you will have bigger input lag but in not fast paced games it's fine. And when you can reach 60-80 then doubling that also gives smoother experience and at the same time input lag is not a problem at all, if you are not trigger finger.
And in this case it's even better because it's not locked to newest GPU. Its basically a free add on to your GPU, if someone is hating that then they are out of their minds.

Cannot wait until they add it in Cyberpunk and Witcher 3.

yes test it please and tag me in your reply.

im using 7900 xt at 1440p so your results will be similar to mine, problem is i cant test it right now, i dont even have starfield installed as im waiting for more patches, etc.

new atlantis is a laggy mess, i want to see if this frame gen fixes it for us and it becomes smooth running around the city.

My problem is that neither frame generation technology offers consistency right now. I you could perfectly double flat 60 FPS to flat 120 FPS with a minimal latency penalty, it would be perfect. Current implementations are not good.

I'll stick to 60 Hz + Black Frame Insertion for now.

Yeah um. I tried installing the preview driver twice and it bluescreened both times.
Guess there's some incompatibility somewhere. Probably crapping out because of the igpu, but this isn't working lol.
I may try again tomorrow, but as far as I can tell it's either safe mode + DDU (a pain) or wait for proper release.

Classic AMD.

Why use a nvida card in these test?

It's put on a pedestal is a vendor agnostic solution, this shouldn't be an issue.

They mention in the release notes specifically that it is advised to do a clean install of the driver. Its a preview, basically a beta or alpha so issues are expected.

yeah i am going to wait until end of october/early november, hopefully we will have a whql release then, and windows 11 new feature update will be out to main channel as well, and I will just do a clean install of everything and give it a go.

im in no rush

From what they said at Gamescom, full release of the in driver AFMF will come at the beggining of 2024, so I would not expect november or october.
That preview is probably just to give people a glimpse of what they are doing, much needed as well after waiting for FSR3.
Good thing is that FSR3 for upscaling part uses 2.2 or newer of FSR so all the devs will need to use that version instead of 2.0 or 2.1. They still have much to improve on the upscaling part but tbh after what I saw with FG and AFMF I think they can do it and really improve the upscaling part of FSR.

Ok so I finally got it to work. Had to DDU, disable iGPU and re-enable the device manually in device manager to finally make it work.
Ingame the overlay keeps breaking really badly, suddenly stopping all performance metrics (regarding the game, e.g. temperature works fine).
So I had to check with my OSD to see the FPS output by the GPU.
I did go from ~100fps to a steady 150-165Hz and it worked fine with VRR. Although I should mention that what I'm really testing here is fluid motion, there's no FSR involved.
The game felt a bit smoother, although not by so much that I can immediately tell.
Dead giveaways were the artifacting (if I tried to break it), FPS drops when spinning like a CS spinbotter (to 90 or so) or looking at the OSD.
I did not feel any difference in input lag nor did it look anywhere near as bad as I hoped. I really had to go out of my way to actually see the visual artifacting.

Yeah, this technology might be open but it is pretty much useless on an Nvidia gpu the test should really be on a 7000 series gpu and honestly I would likely only use it on one.

Hopefully they improve it there are way too many downsides currently.

I do have a 144 Hz monitor, and I see no point in FG. FreeSync works between 48-144 Hz, so anything within this range comes with great input response, and appears fluid (at least to me). Below 48 FPS, FG is basically useless anyway.

in starfield, New Atlantis for example, it looks choppy even with freesync on at around 50-60 fps, FG will bring that 120+ smoothness and it will look smoother when running around say New Atlantis.
