I wondering if these black box ones were what they had for warranty claim replacements back in the day so they didn’t have to send out the bigger, cool boxes. The only thing I can really think of at the moment or just end of life stock.

In fact I don't recall having a GPU box in wrap ever. Probably just some manufacturers do/did this?

Personally I'd just keep a XP machine offline. Hell, I don't connect even a Win7 system to the internet. :D

I get your point about being off line, I need all the test bench stuff for the the GPU etc. :) After seeing PhilI, s old video on GOTEK USB Floppy Emulator Simulator i am thinking of getting one:)

I use older 3DMarks (2001SE, 03, 05, 06) which work offline. And Futuremark gives their universal Pro serial keys so they don't need an internet validation.

I went to the antique mall today!

EVGA 7800 GT for $8 - haven't cleaned or tested it yet, though I'd like to assume it's working.

S3 Trio for $10, also assumed to be working. I haven't tested this either, but would anyone happen to know which specific model it is by the PCB markings? The Wikipedia page lists a few different models of the S3 Trio.

I also got a computer, but I'll save the details and photos for when it all gets cleaned, which may take a while. It is INCREDIBLY dusty.

Got this ASRock AM2 upgrade card a couple years ago. Think I even posted about it in here... It had bad caps which I fully replaced, but it never worked. Well, today I decided I'd waited long enough and I was going to fix this stupid board once and for all. Took the heatgun to the back of it to get the CPU socket joints reflowed, and that did the trick.

What a silly looking setup this has become. At least it's quiet.

I’m mostly done cleaning the computer I got, and I started measuring the output voltages of this old AT power supply. All is fine except the 12V rail, which is showing up on the multimeter as 11V.
How low is too low? Do any of you have a go-to ATX-to-AT adapter solution?

edit: the PSU label says the 12V rail is 1.5A and the only cable connected to it is the single wire on the motherboard connector.

Edit 2, sorry: the label actually says 1.5A min 9A max, my bad

Do you have a SSD on that rig? After using modern hardware for years, going back to Vista with a HDD would be a nightmare

XP is snappy enough with a fast-ish retrorig with a 7200 rpm drive at least.

Not a fan of the chip placement and the fan is ugly as sin, but at least it isn't artefacting.

Also the case from the PC I found the 6600 in. Other specs include - A64 3000+ 939, 2x512, 160GB Seagate SATA HDD, ASUS A8V-MX.

So, which one did you guys buy back in the day?
I skipped the GTX480 as I had a GTX275 and didn't need an upgrade. But had a good deal come up I would have leaned that way.

After seeing PhilI, s old video on GOTEK USB Floppy Emulator Simulator i am thinking of getting one:)
That would likely make your retro PC efforts a lot easier.

Beautiful!!! Get on some Far Cry there bud
And some Command & Conquer 3!

I ended up with an Asus GTX 470 at that point. Then I believe two 5770's next on that fabled MSI Lucid Hydra Intel motherboard that supported scalable graphics cards of either brand. I will have to look at my old Newegg account LOL. I know I have pictures on an old android phone that I hope I didn't throw away.

A 6600, not a GT though. :( IIRC the core can be overclocked to about GT levels, but no hope on the memory. 6600 uses normal DDR when 6600 GT uses GDDR3.
