What's a decent 775 motherboard that will overclock?

I've been messing around trying to build a fast (for the time) XP machine. I have a cheapo gigabyte GA-EG31M-S2 motherboard that wont overclock a E8400 even though it's the revision that is supposed to overclock well and doesn't post with the Q6600 tape mod. So I am 0 for 2 and wondered if there was a certain chipset I need to look for. I would prefer overclocking the E8400 to 3.4 or so vs the tape mod working.

The Intel XBX boards are really good for an OEM board, while the pinnacle might be the limited-production Foxconn X48 Black Ops. ASUS boards have great memory capabilities for this gen, too.

P45 will push the FSB further than X48 will (depending on the board), I was stuck at 4GHz with my Q9650 due to that.
If you can get your hands on a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R it was considered among the best for it.

RoG boards have been around since ~2006 IIRC.

I would say DFI, but they are rarer than hens teeth these days, functioning ones at least. On the flip side, ASUS had serious offerings at the time, just be aware of their tend to overvolt using auto settings.

mATX in the 775 days didn't get any good boards really.
Didn't start seeing any decent ones until socket 1156 / 1366.

There were not, it wasn't until X58 and P55 they became viable, that's when I picked up a Maximus III Gene.
The best OCing boards on 775 were P45 chipset, and the Gigabyte EP45-UD3R was among the best (I envied it with my X48-DS4).

At the time i could not afford a different chip to try this with. It had more in it, but could not cool it enough. Vcore was 1.57v

Well, you probably want a Rampage Extreme for the best results. Some choice P45 boards as well... but they are rare now. Very expensive when available, the people who have R1Es or even M1F's (Maximus Formula) aren't inclined to sell, kind of like the Quad FX motherboard (think it was the L1N64-SLI?) or EVGA SR-2's.

As others have said, mATX wasn't a thing in the X38/X48/P45 days, mainly because back then motherboards actually came with a decent number of PCIe slots and other useful features.

I also had decent luck with P45, specifically a P5Q-SE PLUS. It's actually one of the lower-end P5Q boards IIRC, and most of them should do pretty well. Better than your G31, anyway.

My first 775 board I did some overclocking with was some Gigabyte P31 board, in 2010 replaced with some Asus P5Q board which my dad is still using with a E7200 and windows 10 on SSD.

Literally any P35/45 will get you 3400 MHz on your E8400. I had an MSi P35 board (don't remember its full name unfortunately) and managed to crank about 3700 MHz off E3200 using the latest BIOS (the board was obsolete by the time but do you really expect a 15 y.o. dude to be financially capable to buy something less ridiculous..?). The limiting factor was a CPU, it couldn't reach anything higher even on Maximus boards. X48 is unlikely to be significantly better, so you'd rather ignore them.

ASUS P5Q-VM and ASUS P5Q-EM are Q45 mATX boards. Still capable of overclocking but a bit worse than P35/45.

P45 is the best. But Q6600 has 9x multiplier so you dont even need a high FSB board. I ran that on 400x9 3600Mhz on 965p DS3 back then. E8400 also has 9x. So you only need like 450FSB to reach 4Ghz+ anyway. Gigabyte's and Asus's midrange P35-P45 board should be well enough.
