I think any of these should give you some good experiences of overclocking on 775

I remember having a XFX (I think or possibly an EVGA.... nope just checked, a XFX... ) It was the chipset rather than the board but man it was terrible... Did remember though, I had one of these DFI boards back a while ago...

If I recall correctly though, I did seem to have better luck with the Gigabyte X38/X48 models. I don't believe I had many of the P35/P45 boards...

I just want to come in here and recommend the ASUS P5Q PRO (DDR2) or P5Q3 (DDR3). They have been excellent boards for me.

They are both based on the Intel P45 chipset.

For a modest ambient OC (your use case),

Gigabyte / ASUS P35, P45, X38, X48, hell even P965 with Wolfdale support (Commando, P5B Deluxe, AB9/QuadGT...) is optimal. Consistent, reliable, easy to work with (not ASUS P45 on the latter), performant.

The apex here is ASUS X48 for Duals, specifically P5E3 Premium. REX has issues with its Fujitsu proadilizer caps dying constantly. No other company got X48/X38 clocking as well.
Gigabyte EP45T-UD3R/P is the way for Quads.

DDR3 > DDR2 performance on 775.

Tbh there are some bizarre recommendations in this thread, for example I love nForce chipsets for 775 but I'd never actually recommend someone use them for a retro build (excessive heat & drop like flies, bad OC and funky CPU & RAM compatibility). The Intel Bad Axe ("XBX") boards don't even support Wolfdale, and the Foxconn Black Ops isn't that good especially compared to ASUS X48. Simply check Hwbot or ask anyone who's used both.

Yea... nForce chipset is awful. My ASUS P5Q EM DO is just a awesome board and I got it for 40 dollars. The cpu I got off AliExpress for 9 dollars plus ram off ebay for 25 dollars

P45 seems to have no problem with 450 MHz FSB, but there are serious FSB termination issues with Kentsfield. It's likely that a bunch of them max out at less than 370 MHz, unless you got lucky.
I know that with a bronze-sample, 367 MHz FSB results in "Bus/Interconnect Error" WHEAs. Especially Q6600, even the G0s.

Kentsfield, especially Q6600, is the meme of FSB termination issues. My Q6600 acts very weird at only 367 MHz FSB, I get the above WHEA error, if I take cold air off of it, LOL.
I can increase the FSB termination voltage to 1.3V and blow air from an air con, then I can Prime95-blend it with no errors. But if I even let it go to room temp, I then can't even browse without a bus error! :banghead:

Man, I didn't expect so many people to respond to this one. Thanks for all the suggestions but for simplicity's sake, I've punted on 775 in lieu of a i5 660 which overclocked nicely to 3.7 on an Intel DH55TC board on the stock cooler. I may throw something beefier on and try for more. I know this isn't the most era appropriate platform for XP but it is still 100% supported by XP drivers.

I had two deferent 775 boards paired with a E8400, a EVGA 750I FTW motherboard and a Gigabyte P45 UD3P. Both boards allowed for a 4.5GHz OC. The Gigabyte board also allowed for a Q9650 to be OC'ed to 4.5GHz. I didn't have the Q9650 when I had the EVGA board.

Another +1 for the P5Q Pro. Had 3.9ghz on a Q9550(S-spec) on 450-490fsb.

if I remember correctly, someone at TPU also made 'tweaked' bioses for the board that would add better ram compatibility or tweaking options for better CPU and ram stability. I ran one of these modded bioses but I dont think I was able to get any better of an OC than the stock Asus bios.

P45 chipset boards from Gigabyte and Asus are amongst better OCers, IIRC.
(ABIT and DFI being especially desirable)

Also, don't forget about 771 Xeon mods
(note: BSEL mods do not work on gigabyte boards, 771 mods still work, tho.)

Speaking of BSEL mods:
If you want something of a 'curio', many OEM boards or non-OCing Intel 1st-party boards will BSEL-mod OC by FSB ID and VID. So, you could potentially run a 1066fsb CPU at 1333fsb, or a 1333fsb CPU at 1600fsb.

I had a set of Geil black dragon memory. It was very decent stuff, but I think the XMS extreme was faster. Or maybe able to run tighter timings at the same speeds any ways.

Increase memory voltage to 2.0-2.1V or timings to CL6.6.6.18.
Is this 4x 2GB configuration ?
What board you have ?
Using 4x 2GB may need some increase on NB voltage.
Also, going beyond 450MHz FSB with Quad Core may also be tough (depending on board used).

I do suggest Ballistix, some OCZ Plats or others.
What you want to find for DDR2 are the sticks that have the right IC's in them to clock and Ballistix tend to have the good ones by default because at the time of DDR2 manufacture they were/are owned by Micron which made the good IC's for DDR2 - So it follows any "Good" set of those will have about the best you'll find for DDR2 sticks.

The others suggested are good recomendations too, check out the RAM list here for more info but know this isn't quite the complete list:

I had a set of patriot PC2-7300 2x512mb sticks that did 560mhz 1:1. Best ram/board/CPU combo ever, and was i think at the time in the top ten highest OC of a E6300 on air As yu can see, the board was a Asus P5B-deluxe, which was a mega good board
