What about the hotspot? Is there a significant delta?
From what I remember the delta wasn't large 20c at most iirc.

Did a benchmark run in CP2077. One is stock settings, OC Bios so PL is 400W. Second one is +15% PL, 1110v, 3100MHz max on core and 2600MHz on memory.
If that result is ok then I dont really see a point in OCing the card.

Because you are CPU limited even at 4K, putting aside the natural GPU power limit. Cyberpunk is the worst code where reason, because there ain't one. Also you do FSR auto? What's the point? You don't even know at what point it enables 720p to upscale during each benchmark and what's the internal target time budget for it. The real point to look is GPU utilization. If you don't get 100% on average during benchmark... then obviously you are not GPU limited. It is shit code or CPU limited... or in this case - both. No matter what settings you put on actually. The card does nothing for certain point in the benchmark.

I even wont indulge myself further analyzing Cyberpunk, there's no point. W1z already has done the job since day one and made a point. Naysayers to the OC have been always since doing with jumpers on 386... but rarely who does it properly.

That's weird. How is your case airflow? My Pulse 7800 XT stays in the high 80s with its hotspot temp even with a +15% power limit.
I think its not suited to the 7800xt. Its vertically mounted and the GPU is very close to the CPU cooler. I think its created a hotter than usual spot in the middle of the card where no airflow can easily get to and thats making it worse. Picture attached.

Setup

My 180mm fan doesnt fit under the nitro and a small 120 does help but not much. I was thinking of putting a fan on top of the cooler to the side to push air down the card, It goes against airflow but at this point, its worth a try :fear:

I have been able to get 2600Mhz stable though at 1050mv (about 0.931v irl). With memory at 2639 and +15 power draw, the hotspot isn't going past 85 degrees.

Being close to the CPU cooler may not necessarily be a problem. The problem I see is that the card pushes right against the glass side of the case which prevents hot air from escaping it. You need a little clearance for the card to vent, which you don't have.

trying a new OC today on my 7900 xt with latest drivers, seeing really good results and fully stable

power limit +8
undervolt -60
+150 core on slider
and my vram stays same at 2770 oc since i bought it, got lucky on the vram i know most don't oc that high stable. around 3000 it becomes unstable, so i keep it safe at 2770

going to 2750 or 2700 on vram doesn't seem to change the core boosting any, and i don't want +15 power limit cause im trying to keep temps under 90.

at stock settings this card runs really cold, but give the power limit +15 and it will hit 90 hotpsot, normal, but I don't like seeing those hot of numbers.

I opened up the case, and I'm in a super cold country - didn't help much. I don't think that's the problem.

reference specs (stock Powerlimit and Stock boost clocks from MBA Cards)
overclocked at 284W it runs at around 48-51°C with a hotspot temp of ~70°C while being almost inaudible.
actual stable overclock and not just "it ran timespy and fortnite for 25 minutes":
3000 MHz Max. Clock -110mv (1040mv) and 2550 on the Memory. (does not crash in ANY 3DMark Benchmark even at 970mv while there are games stuttering and crashing at 1025mv. 3DMark is not good for stability testing on RDNA3 for some reason...)
Clockspeed in Game:
Stock ~2250MHz Core / 2700-2800MHz Front End CLK.
OC ~2700-2830MHz Core / 3200-3250MHz Front End CLK.
Average Gain ~12%

No black screens, no crashes, no instability and no driver problems. :)
100% recommended.

And I thought my Sapphire Pulse was great with its 68 °C core and 83 °C hotspot. Congrats! :)

Does it OC as well though?
I haven't tried. All I know is, it keeps its temps at a 280 W power limit with a slightly higher fan RPM and around +100 MHz on the GPU clock on average.

-110 undervolt, wow. i knew the lower end cards oc'd well, but I didn't know they could go that far stable. that is impressive. i can only do around -60 safely. otherwise some games will crash if i undervolt more than that.

I'll just run some benches still with the 3070 to do a before/after comparison here, so the XTX may come online only tomorrow. I'll try to expedite it, though :D

Don't know about the 7800XT but I bought a 6750XT Challenger and was shocked at how quiet the card is. As rock cards also use a smaller but longer shroud vs others. For me it does a fine job and the temps are never too high but like I said it is a different GPU.

I kinda love that the box art is so bad. Imagine them working on it like "Hey what's this one? Pulse? What do I do with that? Oh, it's the bottom SKU of the line? Ok, I'll throw some random clipart shapes on it and call it good."

Heat rises, so airflow in this case with a card / axial fans is going to be absolute drama. You'd need LOTS of free, open space to sort this out proper. Its not there.

Creating even more airflow and turbulence in the case in different directions is going to likely make things worse. Stronger intake would be my go-to. If you have a very strong intake, you're just pushing the hot air out by force. The 'server' style of cooling, air tunnel effect basically. Put an array of intake fans below the case ;) You might even get away with them blowing at lower RPM.

The PSU kinda adds to the injury, because it adds an outtake towards the top.

Another option, can you rotate the case 90 degrees so the orientation is 'normal'? At least for temporary/testing purposes... you'll quickly figure out that way if you can really use more airflow or if its really just the orientation of the GPU. Just 'proximity to CPU' isn't the culprit here, this happens in virtually every regular case setup, and your CPU airflow direction is perfect, bottom in top out.

Behold, for here comes a somewhat long post (starting with how it looks):

Now, for the comparisons (and what a bad day for benchmarking today has been, hot as hell here). Tried to always use the highest preset available without any RT and upscaling, but F1 22 is an exception: I used the second highest otherwise it'd crash every single time on the 3070.
First the slighly OC'd 3070 score, then the 7900XTX at stock settings:

Now that I'm done with the comparisons, I'll try optimizing undervolting and frame limiting. Is using Radeon Chill globally a viable option to limit frames?

I didn't know the 3070 did so well! It's only 1k points behind my 7800 XT in Superposition! o_O

Your build looks awesome, btw! :)

As for Radeon Chill, it's worth having a go, although I've seen it introduce some weird stuttering in some games, so a static frame rate limit works better, imo.

That's why I needed something with more oomph to upgrade to. Anything less than a 7900XT/4070Ti would be too little.

Thank you very much ;)
