I didn't know the 3070 did so well! It's only 1k points behind my 7800 XT in Superposition!
Superposition is notoriously Nvidia biased.

I did not know that 7900Xts came with 3x8 pin connectors. Are you sure you don't mean 7900XTX?

They sure do and they max out at ~400W. At 400W with 1050mV on the core I am 200 points away fron 7900XTX (stock) in TimeSpy. I just got the card and couldnt test it more but I think that if 1000mV is stable or 1025mV then I can reach XTX (stock) performance in TimeSpy. Temps are amazing on this Sapphire at 400W core is under 50 and hotspot under 80-85 so no thermal throttling at all.

Either way now it seems (with RDNA3) we need to pay for extra performance ... no more MPT unlocking :( so if you want a faster card you need to pay for it ... I think AMD locked RDNA3 because of people complaining about drivers/issues and they were secretly having a stupid OC on the card that made it unstable. It's just my opinion tho :)

When I bought my 7900Xt it was right around launch. The Nitro version was not released for the XT yet. I see that you have way more Power potential than me. As you said 400 W is basically the 7900XTX with 4 less GB of Vram. Sapphire and As Rock seem to make the best performing 7900 cards but with your performance indeed with the performance of the 7900 cards you only need a Water block if the fan noise is a non starter.

Oh yes... people on OC forums have flashed their two 8 pin reference cards to nitro BIOS'ses, it handles the increased power. But yes... it only makes sense if you are on water.

Thing is this 7900XT Nitro is so cool I can't believe it (well its a 3slot+ card) ... I'm inlove with Sapphire ... Had a Vega64 Sapphire Nitro+ LE that I'm so sad that I've sold ... It was looking and performing admirably. For me these Sapphire cards are really really nice.

It's crazy how high RDNA3 can clock, I set my card to 1000mV to see what would happen, it's obviously not stable but I am seeing 3.2 Ghz regularly in some games, I bet that if this would have been on a 5nm TMSC node it would have been so much better.

Looks like I got the absolute shortest straw on the undervolting raffle. Any lower than 1097mV and I can't get a HZD benchmark run without a crash.

3.2Ghz.. thats insane. Are you sure you've got the right clocks? Last i checked, hwinfo has frontend and not-frontend clocks. One of them is significantly higher :)

It really depends on the game, in Fortnite for some reason it clocks really high and this is with hardware ray tracing on, I think it's because it's not hitting the power limit. The coil whine is crazy.

Every undervolt with no limit on max frequency will go unstable.

If the game allows the GPU to clock really high, it will run out of its VF curve and crash because you're not allowing it to draw 1.1v

I've seen 2950 with 1050mv. Not stable, but ran for a good 10 minutes, so I bet you can bench at pretty high clocks too. At that point, running vram at stock also helps you get higher clocks, which is a clear sign you're past the limit of stability. If your VRAM oc limits the core, you're doing it wrong.

I'm limiting it to 2600, following what you said yourself. And yet I can't undervolt that much, unless I missed your recommendation being aimed at a 7800XT instead of a 7900XTX.

I'm running a 7900XT. The XTX also has a higher voltage cap, right? XT goes up to 1.1V.

For the XTX I think the voltage cap is 1.15V.

Yup it does go up to 1150mv

1699635238485.png

When I set it to something like 1070 I can get over 18000 in Port Royal, but in games it can crash even on 1120. That's why I given up on OCing it, rather have a stable system.

Phasmophobia crashed twice on me today. Guess I'll try running at the 1125mV that the auto-undervolt gives me.

EDIT: crashed thrice. Running at defaults now :ohwell:

I've just noticed some weirdness:

Sometimes I play a game for X amount of time, then the sound freezes, everything disappears from the screen, and only a PC restart helps. Sometimes it happens after a few minutes, sometimes after an hour, sometimes not at all. I couldn't find anything conclusive in the Event Viewer.

Also, sometimes the system hangs for a few seconds on the Windows desktop. That is, I click on Chrome, for example, then nothing happens. I wait, I wait, there's no disk or CPU activity, and then suddenly Chrome opens.

Is the GPU driver messing with me like it did with the 5700 XT, or is it time to reinstall Windows? I have to admit, this installation has been with me with 3 CPUs and several GPUs. :ohwell:

I just hope it's not a hardware fault. It's quite difficult to reproduce, so RMA-ing wouldn't be easy, either.

Edit: System specs in my profile, everything is at stock.

I'd check event viewer. It will tell you if it was a graphics driver crash or something else. I'd also switch off the automatic graphics driver update in windows. It can mess things up as well.

The event viewer doesn't show anything - only an unexpected shutdown/restart. I guess it's not GPU-related, then?

Automatic driver installs are already turned off.

The event viewer doesn't show anything - only an unexpected shutdown/restart. I guess it's not GPU-related, then?

Automatic driver installs are already turned off.
Normally, if there is a driver issue, it would say the graphics driver has crushed or something similar. It would state what cause the crash and restart.
Do you have any OC on your Ram memory? Maybe you should use memtest to check if maybe there is a problem with that. Unlikely but who knows. You have unusual mem config 24GB. Didnt know it comes with 12GB per module.

Nah, it's 2x 24 GB modules = 48 GB in total. :) The only OC I have on it is its default EXPO profile with VSoC at 1.2 V.

I'll have a check with memtest just in case, but it has worked for a long time, only started having this issue recently, so I don't think it'll give me anything. It's also rock stable in stability tests, like 30-min Cinebench runs or the 3DMark stability tests. This is why I'm thinking it's a software issue, but there's literally nothing in the event viewer. :(
