That would be similar to the scenario discussed here:

Yeah, from what I understand, it seems really similar. Quite a lot of work, though... for something that isn't exactly worth it, as I won't really be using Windows 8.1 for anything constructive, just some pretty numbers on a screen.

How did you manage to get it to work? Always some problem or hurdle to overcome. It would be nice to know the specifics. No one in this thread was able to get it working at all?
I uploaded a tutorial to my youtube:

Also, the control panel works, but you first would need to update Windows and then reinstall the driver using the setup. I did it through the Device manager as it was a clean 8.0 install. In the description I have the archive org link where I uploaded the files

I am glad you liked it! I still can't believe I finally found people who did it. People on the guru3d forums. Now to see if I can get the 30 series on Vista, since it is also super close to 7, especially with the extended kernel

Although W8.1 shares the same Jan 10th 2023 Extended Support Update End-of-Life as W7 ESU, W7 simply seems to be more enduring for market share.
This is because people were dumping on Windows 8x. Even though mostly the first Windows 8, which has no Start button. Even when 8.1 works well, Microsoft decided to treat 8.1 like 8.0 Service Pack 1. :(

I actually find 8.0 to be faster than 8.1. Maybe fewer updates ?

Nice! So a custom root certificate and inf were required. No wonder I couldn't get it to work otherwise.

Unfortunately, no Ada support on any of these r470 drivers... would love to benchmark, but alas. Have fun guys!

Ok. Why? Why Windows 8? Why not 8.1? Or better yet, why not 7?
I main 2008R2. I just wanted to see if I could get it working

Plus 8.0 is even faster than 8.1 but 8.1 is still better than 10 and 11

There are a lot of reasons, but mainly windows 7 does not work on my PC, but windows 8.1 does! and on top of that, windows 8 can be customized exactly like windows 7. hell, even i have done that on a another now dead PC. windows 10 can't be made that close

Buying my RTX 3080 forced me to get on with moving to 10, as I deffo wasnt going down to 7 to install drivers for it, was on 8.1 at the time.

I had already planned about half a year before to move to 10, I felt 10 was finally ready for day to day usage, but was holding out for 21H2 as was about half a year or so away. Managed to get a 3080 FE at MSRP, and wanted to sell my 1080ti whilst the market had very high prices, so yeah got on with making my custom 1809 LTSC ISO, did it all in 2-3 days, updated Office from 2009 (which was EOL) to Office 365 at the same time, and was expecting the entire thing to be a nightmare, but it was been used as daily within a week, and Office surprisingly had no issues at all. Since then I have done several updates to the ISO to refine it and fix minor bugs on my scripts, and it was used again as a custom 21H2 upgrade ISO to move me to 21H2 later on.

I am glad I did eventually update the OS as whilst 8.1 had a lot of upsides it was definitely starting to feel dated, especially on the gaming tech side, DX12 etc.

I feel I will end up on 11 at some point, so will start working and testing my stuff on a 11 LTSC ISO.

As to why Nvidia retired 8.1 before 7? The size of the user base.

I suppose the magic question, if this method was discovered at the time I did my transition, would it have kept me on 8.1? not sure, I wanted to already move by then, but its much more convenient to avoid having to change OS.

Exactly. I don't know anyone who stayed with 8.1, they either continued using 7 like before or updated from 8.1 to 10 (like myself).

I am dualbooting with 7 on my current 7960x rig, but I pretty much always use 8.0 now. It is faster than any other NT6 OS and 10 and 11 are gross on so many level ! Also 8 supports Resizable BAR, so I am basically getting a faster OS than 7 AND being able to fully use my GPU at once.

I never used the original 8, 8.1 was pretty usable after some learning of using it. I actually have a 8.1 tablet which I bought back from my friend for half-free price (20EUR with a 32GB microSD card).

Still runs youtube without hiccups at full-screen and that's basically the most demanding usage I have for it.
