I think that maybe Lex was also referring to performance impact and yeah, I don’t know how wise it is to waste the resources of an already limited CPU to emulate the instructions it doesn’t have just to run an unsupported OS on it. And it also depends on how MS implemented the lock. If it’s a one-time check that could be fine-ish, but if the system will regularly try to access said instructions for its processes… that would get rough.

I mean, you guys are running Windows 11 on systems not officially supported, so don't complain if it suddenly breaks, it's bound to happen /shrugs
Hell, get your hands dirty and make your own workarounds.

Other than that, if you think you're leading some sort of holy crusade by running Windows 11 in a system that's not officially supported, that's just plain silly.

At the end of the day, power users, privacy-focused users, "vintage systems" users, we're all a minority in Microsoft's point of view.

And power users make a blip in the radar mostly because of enterprise and business users. Definitely not because of "consumer" users.

Now I'm wondering if I should activate this license on my current pc that's already running Windows 11 because I'm afraid that Microsoft might pull the plug and block people from activating Windows 10 keys on Windows 11 as I want to be able to install Windows 11 on the new computer.

Considering how long it took Microsoft to stop activating Windows 11 installs using Windows 7/8 keys (they were supposed to stop in 2016, but they kept working at least until the end of last year), I doubt they're gonna stop activating Windows 11 installs using Windows 10 keys.

Windows 10 is supported until October 2025 at least. Microsoft won't stop activating Windows 11 installs with Windows 10 keys at least until then, if not until years later. So you have time.

They no longer work for me either. I have a whole set of direct from Microsoft Win 7 keys that are a no go for windows 10 or 11 now.

yeah I bought like 5 keys so far from TPU website here when they do the adverts for cheap win 10 or 11 keys. none of them currently work. it says this is not a genuine key when I try to activate it.

I can't wait for SteamOS to come to Desktop, ChimeraOS is already pretty damn close though. but some games like FFXIV still require me to have windows (cutscenes don't work in Linux with proton yet) but yeah 90% of everything I do I am booted into Linux.

Hmm, there was some commentary that it might still work depending on your install media. Basically, if your install media is from before a certain date (around September or so last year), it should still work regardless.

Only bad thing I saw was using 7-8 keys that activated to 10 and people upgrading to 11 were deactivating.
Far different issue than new media rejecting them after a clean install of 10-11.

That's the news piece from back then.

This change does not end Windows installs that are already activated with those old keys, so don't worry about losing the activation after a forced update of Windows 10 or 11, the already in service keys will carry forward. The current Windows 11 version in beta channels already includes this lockout of old keys so the changes are coming to the general public very soon. There may still be a workaround to exploit, however. If you have install media created before the lockout goes into affect you may be able to do an offline install, activate with an old key, then connect online to push the activation through to Microsoft's server. It's only a theory, but we'll see if it works after the update goes public.

Rufus seems to still download a May 2023 version of Windows 10 22H2 (at least for the English International localization), so maybe that still works since it shouldn't include any changes to the files from after that date.

As for Windows 11, the only version you get on Rufus is the one from December 2023 so this workaround might not work with that.

With the news being from September 30th 2023, I assume the change went live in the public release of Windows 11 23H2 version, so anything before that should still work fine if the news piece is to be believed. Cumulative updates only remove from the list updates from before the cumulative update that are covered by the cumulative update (If I recall correctly, back in the day Windows updates were usually released as separate items covering specific aspects of the operating system, so you had your general Windows update, your security update, your Internet Explorer update, ActiveX killbits, Root Certificate updates, DirectX and so on). Starting with Windows 10 all monthly Windows updates are cumulative and cover the whole system and all of its components (so you only get one or two updates a month, the general Windows update covering pretty much everything and .NET updates which seem to be released with their own schedule/criteria), which was not the case with previous versions of Windows (hence the usual "installing update 1 of 200" screens in Windows 7 after a fresh install).
