AMD today released the latest version of AMD Software Adrenalin. Version 24.2.1 WHQL comes with optimization for "Skull and Bones," and "Nightingale." In case you're wondering where Radeon RX 7900 GRE support is; it's been around since July 2023 when the GPU was launched as a China-exclusive. With this release, AMD is also expanding the Vulkan API feature-set with new extensions as listed below. A large number of issues have been fixed with this release. To begin with; an intermittent driver-timeout issue seen with "Helldivers 2" on RX 7000 series GPUs has been addressed. Excessive stutter when playing several games, such as "Battlefield 2042," "Destiny 2," "Overwatch 2," "Monster Hunter: World," "PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS," and "STAR WARS Battlefront II," has been fixed. Excessive game loading times with "Deathloop" on cards such as RX 6900 XT, has been fixed.

"Deadspace" crashing on some RX 6000 series cards with RTAO enabled, has been fixed. First launching "Enshrouded" or changing AA settings, causes an intermittent application crash, which has been fixed. Visual artifacts with the game have been also fixed. HDR settings failing to take effect with "Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth" has been fixed. An intermittent driver-timeout with "Counterstrike 2" with FSR enabled on RX 7900 XTX, has been fixed. Incorrect reporting of graphics API as DirectX 12 in some Vulkan games has been fixed. Parsec host application experiencing a crash after reboot, has been fixed. Microsoft Teams displaying looped webcam footage on Ryzen 7 7840U has been fixed. Also fixed is a green tint noticed in Oculus Rift S with some RX 7000 series products. AFMF incorrectly displaying in hybrid GPU setups has been fixed—AFMF only works with a supported GPU is the display GPU.

  • World of Warcraft may experience extended initial loading times with DirectX 12 API on some AMD Graphics Products, such as the Radeon RX 6800.
  • Shader caching may fail for Windows usernames containing accented characters. [Resolution targeted for 24.3.1]
  • FPS performance metric may incorrectly report values while a game is minimized. [Resolution targeted for 24.3.1]
  • AMD SmartAccess Video may be incorrectly reported as "Available" on some systems with the Parsec Virtual Display Driver installed.
  • Performance drop may be observed while using some DirectML workloads in Topaz AI.
  • Audio and video may intermittently become out of sync while recording using the AV1 codec in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. [Resolution targeted for Q3]
Important Notes
  • For users who previously installed an AMD Software preview driver, running AMD Cleanup Utility is recommended before installing this driver.
  • Some per-game graphics profiles may have incorrectly been set to HYPR-RX Eco after a driver upgrade. Users experiencing this issue may use the Factory Reset option to return all profiles to default.

Honestly, I haven't had a single issue since setting my gpu clock on my card to 90%. I feel like the issue is card vendors setting the overclocks too high and this is unlikely to be fixed short of downclocking.

Not for me unless I drop clocks. But its certainly better.

Currently using 23.x.x driver because 24.x.x. has been an utter disaster for me. Stuttering, no HDR, DX12 shitting itself within an hour, hopefully they will sort it out.

If I were alone I might think so. But the Helldivers 2 shenanigans are documented and widespread. So we can't really blame the card here.

I don't recall any vendors doing any "aggressive" overclocks, unless you're saying any overclocks because AMD's reference clocks are prefection?

I'd call anything over 2700mhz boost risky, so yes there are some aggressive overclocks out there. Unless of course they actually fixed it invalidating this theory, see below:

Didn't you crash after the beta drivers came out though? Can you enable Global Illumination yet? If yes, maybe they did actually fix it and I'll recant my theory. I just know my fix worked before there was a fix lol.

I just know I can turn everything on and not crash at all now.

Going to test 24.2.1 tonight but I can attest to the rickety nature of the 24.x.x releases. 24.1.1 basically broke my 6950XT (horrific stuttering in most games) so I was on 23.12.1 until last night when I installed this latest release. Haven't tried any games yet though. Here's to hoping...

Yes had 1 crash but none since. Tested with SSGI and AA on and fine now.

On the 24.2.1 WHQL drivers now and not the beta but that shouldn't make a difference.

Fair enough then. Maybe my card is just a poor clocker afterall, I can accept that. Since it's used I'm going to have to live with it unfortunately, XFX warranty does not transfer, but I may bring it up with the guy who sold it to me. Thermals are great ironically, so I don't think a repaste will fix it.

And yeah the game sometimes just crashes too, so that's probably what you witnessed.

  • Intermittent driver timeout or application crash may be experienced while playing HELLDIVERS™ 2 with 100% GPU utilization on some AMD Graphics Products, such as the Radeon™ RX 7900 XTX.
So there is still driver work being done.

idle power consumption got worse with 24.1.1, now with 24.2.1 apparently back to "normal". :)

since 24.x.y (or maybe few versions earlier), I observe two things:

1. the driver does not require a restart. so far so good. but after restart, I get a message that system hardware has changed and I had to reboot. I also see smart access memory not available. after restart, it's OK again.
the same behavior is, when I trigger restart of the driver via CRU. at first, it's fine. after reboot the "hardware has changed". after further restart, good again.
the restart of the driver while in windows (be it from driver update or via CRU) leads to some "flag" hanging that has impact for the next restart. a further restart resolves this "flag".
a bit annoying once in a month. ;-)

2. overlay size scales improperly. the gab between the text on the left and values on the right is OK at 100% size. when increased to 200% the gap becomes huge. huge emptiness with no purpose.
that's not OK. I started to live with 100%, though.
I like to set the text color to yellow, however, because on OLED that's less "blinding".
one down, one up. ;-)

so you basically didn't change drivers for months. The driver with anti lag + is like from october 2023.

sure, but basically there is no need to update drivers.
I usually do always upgrade. but I was just playing witcher 3 with antilag+ and did not want to "loose" it.
I regularly watch 'ancient gameplay'. quite nice summary of whether an upgrade makes sense.
since I wanted to start to play alan wake 2, I finally upgraded to 24.1.1. and the idle power consumption degradation was apparent. as the "hardware changed".
but never mind, it like of no relevance that I had been using older drivers for few months..

Outside of adding game support the list of fixed issues per driver is a reason to upgrade.

That works for you I like to stay current with my drivers. I also watch Ancient gameplay's youtube channel but I can decide for myself how to run my system :)
