This generally only happens when a crash in impending.. This bump is looking very much like a precrash-surge..
EDIT2: The issue with Coinbase it would seem turned out to be an outage cause by an overload of transactions. Not sure what that means. Might be bad, might be nothing..

Is anyone still mining? I fired up Nicehash again after a long time idling out of curiosity, and it seems even with my cheap ass electricity I'd only be close to breaking even on the cost to feed my old 1070 the juice. With the recent-ish explosion in prices, I'm wondering if it may be worth it to stick a card or two in my server or something and let them plug away, if I had some newer, faster, more efficient hardware.

Its a volatile short-term investment & not something that everyone should get involved in. You're frequently buying(low) & selling(high) in order to mitigate losses since its near impossible to predict a pattern with it. And yes, a lot of it is a ponzi scheme depending on which one you're investing in.

As a hobby I'm sure there are some still doing it on the side and/or still hold to the illusion that its going to skyrocket in the future, but in general I would say no; especially in this economy. I had mentioned a while back that I heard of someone that had like 50+ Nvidia cards mining crypto. Made a shit ton of money from it, but ended up losing it all because most of what he made was reinvested into increasing his ability to mine more(hardware, electricity costs). So when the crash came, all of his profits were gone and he was stuck with a lot of hardware that he could probably only sell at a loss.

Factoring in the cost of GPUs and the cost of electricity these days, even just breaking even is near impossible these days.

Edit: If one wants to do something useful with their PC, donating some computing power through Folding@Home or BOINC is much better, imo. At least someone (science) profits from the results.

Literally just do work/study that requires computing power, and write off the GPU as a tax deduction since it's a business expense, which is true. Never mind you also get a nice card for gaming.
