Youtube, Discord, Visual Studio Code are flickering with black checkered squares/vertical lines. Partial solutions to this issue.

I still stand by what I said. Issue seems to be fixed since kb5035942 on Windows 11 23h2 22631.3374 on my PC in Chrome 123.0.6312.86 with Nvidia drivers 551.86. Cant reproduce the issue anymore since 2 days now. I dont use Discord though or Visual Studio, just speaking about Chrome.
Just installed that one, let's see. As a power user, I will notice the differences soon enough, and I won't hold back my feedback ;)

I'm on 551.86 right now and issue's back with a vengeance. Discord causes my PC to BSOD (WHEA, split second, doesn't get logged) at random. No good. Occasional checkerboarding on Opera GX... but I close Discord and the issue is gone. Go figure.

but I close Discord
I noticed this in the past too, that when I had OBS Studio open the checkerboarding was happening inside Chrome, but JUST if I had minimized OBS to task bar. I could reproduce the issue this way with 100% chance by going on a twitch.tv stream, open OBS, minimize OBS, and now I had jumping black boxes inside Twitch chat, closing OBS or maximizing OBS again from minimized state and the issue was gone. Really weird.

not a driver issue, hardware issue. check your overclocks, memtest, and look at the whea extended error code.

Issue is still gone since I installed kb5035942 for me in Chrome.
So far all good after trying to reproduce the usual checkerboard stuff.
Also kind of promising in the file info of this update:

Fully aware of what it normally means but machine is not overclocked, settings have been the same since I built it. Happens in a split second and doesn't get logged. Like the scrambled graphics in chromium issue occurs only when Discord is open.

Will probably end up reinstalling Windows, just got no time to do that rn

I can now confirm from my side that this KB5035942 does NOT fix the issue, as the "checkerboard while browsing" came back today.
  • latest version of Google Chrome with all settings on default
  • fully patched Windows 11 23H2 22631.3374
  • latest version of Nvidia Drivers 552.12 for RTX 4090 (even though this totally does not matter here)

Do you have Discord open? Closing it all but gets rid of my persistent BSOD's and at least 99% of the checkerboarding on Opera GX

I'm going to do a full PC cleanup and reassembly plus Windows reinstall soon, I mean to migrate to Start11 v2 and Fences 5 as well, I just need to finish some pending schoolwork over the weekend. Hopefully it's something with my current setup that can be fixed with that idk

No, at that time Discord was not opened. But when intermittent, I advise you, as an inconvenient workaround, to use Discord in the browser instead. As the desktop app is known to cause many issues. Last year I also had some BSODs which were caused by it, f.i. when a GIF was posted.

XMP/DOCP is an overclock - what you're experiencing is not unlike what i saw with 54x drivers when I was pushing my xeon system too hard with 1t.

24H2 is now RTM

I do not use XMP, the profile is too aggressive for my motherboard. It's at 6400 tightened, but this isn't a stability problem, it's been running this way since I built the computer, triple vetted it for stability. Closing Discord fixes the problem. I'm currently on Windows 10, but once I finish getting my work done here tonight I will be doing a complete check-up on my machine just to be safe

Discord cannot create a Windows Hardware Error Architecture event, your hardware is not stable, stop trying to argue against it, your testing for stability was only relevant to the time you tested it for stability, it is invalidated by kernel updates, driver updates, the passage of time, seasons and weather and its effect on silicon decay as well as the day of the week changing from saturday to sunday.

Yeah mate I'm completely new to this, I never set a computer up before in my life! I set my machine up quite haphazardly, I didn't do my due diligence, input bad settings and now I'm just blaming the one application on it. It only took one year for a messenger app of all things to expose the whole house of cards

Hi everyone,
I'll just put it here for everyone's awareness of the latest news: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/40281472#comment64

As was previously said in this topic, according to Manuel, the fix for this bug is already ready in the Canary branch, and I really want to check this, but because of my work I cannot use Windows test builds. I have slight doubts that the fix will actually work (I have some experience with how Microsoft fixes its own bugs), and I really want to believe that the fix is really will work, but in any case, I can easily check if this is so as soon as the fix is released into the stable branch. Since this bug is reproduced slightly differently on each videocard, I will be able to test this from RTX 20 to RTX 40 series.

There is no ETA for the stable branch, but at least it will definitely be ready this year :ohwell:

You're demonstrating bullheadedness, not the mindset of an avid and skilled computer builder/user.

lucky for you, 26100.1 is RTM and will be getting servicing updates from here on.

It was likely the Raptor Lake instability problems as described on this thread, not an issue with my settings per se

2 days ago I flashed the new BIOS MSI released for my motherboard with IA CEP support, and so far, so good.

Really weird problem. Would really like if people here said their pc specs, at this moment I see people blame nvidia, intel, motherboard issues, RAM, chrome, Microsoft. And different things worked for different people.

I'm on 14700k/RTX 3070, got this issue after I installed Windows 11 and really didn't want to go back because Wi-fi and Bluetooth doesn't work on my motherboard on 10 :(. Tried different things mentioned here and other threads, nothing worked, surrendered and went back to windows 10 - no checkerboard so far in ≈24h of use. And yes, it really was bad for me, seen checkerboard bugs daily and issues with videos.

Indeed, since the issue is image artifacts on screen is very easy to link this with other problems caused by faulty hardware.
The thread is about random image artifacts (checker board patterns) appearing only on chromium based apps.

The irony is that you can experience this bug on top of other issues as well which are caused by something else: bad cables, bsods caused by OC or faulty hardware.
This just mixes up issues and makes it harder for people to acknowledge, track the bug and fix it.

I'm on 10 and am affected. Although the new BIOS for my motherboard really helped with the crashes I was seeing. Haven't had one since.

Hi
I had faced the graphics glitching issue on electron apps for a while now (atleast a year)
And off late it had been affecting my regular apps (such as github desktop, vs code, popcorn time, etc) and also my electron project that have animations and video content involved.

Finally managed to fix this issue, and maybe it might help others.

Download latest nvidia control panel.
In manage 3D settings, global settings, change the following two options:-
OpenGL GDI compatability - Prefer compatible (this will be set to auto by default)
Vertical sync - Off (this is by default set to On, and I had tuned it to fast mode before, now set it back to off instead)

I have also shared it on the google bug tracker here for more info.

Some posts are funny here.
Or just sad, at the same time.
Looks like every time this topic is bumped again, some newbie on the block, is the new... well, just bie.
