Bought this today for £20 - had to get 1 with feet, as the clamp type ones wont fit on my desk, as its way to deep for the clamp

Only got 2 screens attached so far as waiting on some new monitor mounting screws from Amazon so i can fit Screen no 3

Last week I had some coupons for 25% off electronics at one of my local thrift stores. As luck would have it, they also had several treasures that day.

The first two things were a 2020 Onn 10.1" tablet and a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 for 18$ and $24, respectively.

The Onn has a MediaTek MT8168B (4xA53 @2GHz, Mali-G52 @800MHz), 2GB of LPDDR4X, and a 1280x800 LCD. The Galaxy has an Exynos 5433 (4xA57 @1.9GHz + 4xA53 @1.3GHz, Mali-T760 MP6 @700MHz), 3GB of LPDDR3, and a 2048x1536 AMOLED screen.

I originally expected the Galaxy to be the one I'd like the most since it's more powerful overall and has a really nice screen.

20240407_194032.jpg

But I actually like the Onn tablet more. As you can see, I was able to root it, and after disabling all of the bloatware, it actually runs pretty well now.

The Galaxy, as far as I can tell, can't be rooted or even bootloader unlocked (thus reinforcing my existing hatred of Samsung). It's also stuck on Android 7, while the Onn is on 11 (still outdated, but much more usable). How interesting that a no-name store-brand tablet is less of an E-waste product than an older flagship tablet from a "real" brand.

The third item, for $7, was this...

20240407_194147.jpg

...a Samsung Freestyle Smart Projector. Once I saw what it was and how much it cost new ($700), I had to have it.

It's a 1080p LED-backlit DLP projector. It runs off of USB-C PD and uses about 30W.

I couldn't care less about the so-called "smart" functionality (plus the remote is missing, and a new one is like $70). Fortunately, it has a micro HDMI port, so I can just ignore that crap and use it as a regular projector.

The picture quality is great, and it even has autofocus and auto-keystone, which are interesting.

One small advice: Take the motorcycle. Just think about. A woman paid in advance costs much less than the other way.

A tech tip man once posted…well that meme is already in this thread. Anyway…
2 hubs for a more convenient place to access the USB ports, one with a 60W PD port, which ended up a almost completely waste of money.
I wanted a port that can do high power PD and connect to my PC at the same time…which I later learned, is not going to happen in the same port. Not to mention that the hub is bloody expensive (for a USB hub).
(Well, my phone is still the iPhone 13mini, so it can use at most 15-20W, but it is still at least 3 times faster than 5W on a generic USB port.)

And a few short charging/data cables, some to use with my portable power bank, some to make my not-cable-managed desk look less horrible.

My brother visited my place a few days ago. He tested the Katana V2X and thought it sounds horrible. He said something along the lines of “Why the hell did you buy this instead of the Pebbles / the transparent glass thingy??”
He has learned a lot from a close friend who works in a OEM IED/headphone factory, so he of course has a point.
B-but I bought this because it is the best compact gaming soundbar! I want a soundbar for the lols looks!
And it has lots of bass! It sounds like arcade rhythm games!

But, If you are after accuracy in your audio, there are much better choice than this.

I have now purchased a sacrificial parts microphone to test the viability of dismantling mine to make the color accents and main volume LEDs white. I blame @Space Lynx for putting this idea in my head.

More upgrades for the laptop.

Since i was going to have it open anyway and Im not sure of the health of the Samsung SM961 they have installed (Samsung magician dont work on them since its an OEM drive...) so I thought might as well go the extra mile and put something better in.

1712699429389.png

Why SN770 you may ask?

1. It boots W11 fast.
2. A Crucial P3 is inferior due to QLC and for some reason there are two versions. CT1000P3SSD801 for £70 or CT1000P3SSD8 (QLC) for £53.
Not quite sure what kind of NAND the CT1000P3SSD801 is running but there have been rumours that some crucial SSDs - namely the cheaper BX line with SKU's that end in '01' are using TLC

It will still be capped at Gen 3 speeds though which is unfortunate but at least it shouldnt throttle as hard (if anything at all)

::EDIT::

Also - Ignore the 'purchased with monthly payments' bs. I have money. I dont know why i thought it would be funny to select that option but its not charging me any interest ontop of the purchase... or at least it better mf'n not. :toast:

----

My main worry now is if the WD drive shows up as a WD drive instead of an external dock. Ive just read that Acronis for WD drives wont clone to an external drive so I might have to do a lot of tap dancing to between my desktop machine and laptop to get things to work.

WD SN770 is literally magic, W1zzard was not lying. Honestly, in every rig I have tried it in, it "feels" faster and snappier than even my Kingston KC3000 1tb which does faster reads/writes and has dram cache.

The SN770 literally does have some kind of genius patented controller or something, its insane how snappy it is. I think you will be very happy. Synthetic numbers mean a lot less than people realize I think, it's really the magic of the controller that matters, and the SN770 has the best damn controller out there.

edit: I have also confirmed this snappiness is present in gen3 mode, I know this because the gen4 slot in my Mobo died a long time ago. :)

It's rather efficient in power draw too.

It and the 990 Pro are basically the only two M.2 flash drives I build with these days.

Besides a P1600X OS drive for high end multi drive systems.

5600GT for my Asrock X300. Feels little faster than my older Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G.

5600GT.png

Edit: Also seems that same memory settings(from 4650G) work fine. Probably this processor will do even better. 4650G had Infinity fabric clock limit of 1900 FCLK(Memory 3800MHz) and frequency was always changing. This was with latest bios from Asrock. I remember earlier bios version's, didnt do that at all. Hwinfo64 reports that IF is at 1900 MHz with this 5600GT, no changes in frequency.

Already out of warranty?

Probably, but even if its not, im just so disappointed with Corsair, i dont want anotehr of their keyboards tbh.

in comparison, the razer KB ive replaced it with, feels so much better quality wise, and much quieter as well. not to mention the Razer was actually cheaper.

Confirmed, been there done that many, many times....

I've been building client & personal rigs w/WD's drives since way back when m.2's first came out (and with their Raptor's before that), neveranottaproblemo :)

Fairly recently purchased an ASUS RT-AX88U PRO AX6000 Dual Band WiFi 6 Router. Very happy with it so far. Using my older RT-AX86U as an AiMesh node.

Make sure your firmware is up to date on that router. A bad TrendMicro update push (I think last year) crippled those routers (and many other Asus routers) temporarily after some operational time. This was regardless if you enabled it or not. Reflashing the firmware was the only way to fix it. Otherwise that's a nice router.

5600GT for my Asrock X300. Feels little faster than my older Ryzen 5 PRO 4650G.

You are welcome to join the ASRock Deskmini Owner's Club and share your experiences. I would be interested in what memory you used and your memory settings for 4650G at 1900 FCLK as I have one on the shelf contemplating if I should put in my X300.

(edit)

Oops I see you're already there for awhile!
