There are some deals to be had for a 5700X3D or 5800X3D and B550 higher end boards are pretty cheap these days in the greater scheme of things.

I was eyeing this board up just the other day when I heard AMD was pushing more chips out for AM4

1717507117212.png

I can easily step up to a B550 Tomahawk for £125 - I think thats a better board???

Huge saving when a good B650 or X670 is around £300. If i can build a fairly cheap setup that will go another 3-4 years. I'll be more than happy. DDR4 is also cheap so i'll be able to slap in 64gigs right away.

The Tomahawk is indeed a better board, if onboard sound is important then for 15 quid more than the Tomahawk you could get the ROG Strix A or F board from most of the main sellers, the difference being Realtek 1200 for the MSI and 1220 with ROG plus their DTS etc if you have the right kit.

It is easy to forget when new generations of both Intel and AM5 hit shelves that the 5800X3D is still a strong gaming CPU if gaming is your main use case, in TPU's 5800X3D review it matched and even bested the Alder Lake 12900k in 1440P gaming.

If sound is not important at all the Gaming Plus should be OK (ALC897), it has less features and slightly weaker power delivery/cooling (10+2 phase) than the Tomahawk.

I dont really need the audio as Im hooked up to an AVR for all that. (Trusty old Yamaha RX-V573) but an extra £25 im happy to pay anyway although im not sure if i'll do much tweaking to the 5800X3D.

Gaming isnt really the first port of call anymore. A lot of what i play almost any half decent potato can run so im just waiting to see what the 5800XTs and 5900XTs are going to be like for the extra cores and faster single core speed. If it will match or get close a 7700X but with the usual obvious AM4 vs AM5 caveats for a much lower price then i'll still be more than happy. PCI-E 5.0 would be nice but in all honestly I honestly dont see that as a deal breaker for me personally. Not planning to upgrade any SSDs any time soon and the gap in GPu performance probably isnt a whole lot.

Well the 5800x can be had for 190 quid from AWD or CCL, that's a damn good price really and a good saving over 5800X3D prices.

PCI-e 5.0 is like gold dust on a steak. Completely unnecessary. I went for an MSi Pro B650M-A that only has 4.0 for my current system because it saved me a good bit of money compared to a 5.0 board. It'll be a long time before we see the benefits of 5.0, methinks. :)

Without going into a "political" discussion, most of the manifesto are out but as someone who doesn't really follow the "discussion".
How do you guys read and interpret them? I dunno if its just me but I have always struggled to understand a bulk of what they are saying in them and genuinely don't understand how they "directly" affect me.
Apart from the obvious things like price increase, tax and lack of health care support from the existing government. What else do they "say" that actually directly affects our lives that these parties put in the manifesto that could actually sway us to vote for them?
I feel like they need to release a dumb down version of their manifesto to try and get people to understand their "intentions" to gain a potential vote.

^^ way too politics. The only safe answer that doesn't involve partisan sentiment is to say that manifestos are rarely implemented. They're presents promised by people who can't really afford them.

Simply put, beware those who seem to promise 'lovely' things. If the country (not any one party) could afford them, we'd already have them.

Tech please!

Mixed? Do you mean absolutely rubbish? 17 degrees and hayfever at the end of June is unbelievable. Last year, I could take my jumper off at work for a single week, and by the looks of it, this year appears to be the same. :(

My hayfever is mainly at its worst if I go to bed late(12am), in the morning from around 8-10am and then 7-10pm range.
June has never really felt like summer to be fair, its typically end of May, middle of July and then random weeks of August.

I always feel the worst right after waking up myself. The weird part is that I work night shifts and sleep during the day when it's the hottest, so theoretically, I should feel the worst at night when it's cold, but no. The human body is a strange thing, that's for sure.

I've lived here in the UK since 2016, but summers never felt as cold as it did last year, and by the looks of it, this year as well. I always managed to make a couple of trips, and attend a couple of festivals every summer, but I don't seem to be able to do that anymore because it's cold and rainy all the time. :(

June has never felt summer since I was able to figure out it was summer, saying that it is meant to be warm this week so June is never really consistent.
Even if we want to talk about global warming or whatever, nothing changes that June has never felt like Summer in the UK, but more of a warmer side of Spring until near the end of June.

Yeah, why does the perfect beach weather always have to come mid-week when I'm working, and then it's crap over the weekend when I'm not?

Meanwhile in America:

Count your blessings over there chaps. We get this or worse for the next 3 months.
What is the % rate of americans having AC built into their houses? In the UK its mainly "modern" offices or shopping centres/large stores that will have AC.
Most of us in the UK will complain because we don't have AC to keep it manageable and our houses/home are design to retain heat.

Not to mention my 7700X reaches Tjmax with BOINC when ambient is 25+ °C.

I love this weather, though... when it's a weekend and I'm near a beach. Trying to sleep before a night shift can be a bit tricky when it's hot.

Depends on where you are here but where I am, if you don't have it you'll suffer this time of year.
ATM our high temps are around 37c with a healthy dose of humidity to go with it due to the northerly flow of air from the gulf that brings all that with it.
That was about the high temp we had yesterday and it's expected again today BUT we did catch a break this morning with some badly needed rain falling right now.

However:
It's not going to last and all that's going to do is boost humidity levels later today when the sun is out again.
Typical here for this time of year with spotty rain showers that might last ten minutes with sunshine and terrible humidity that follows.

Depends on the area. Pacific Northwest has UK weather, and probably half or slightly more have AC. Southwest it is universal - southeast where me and Bones are from it is almost universal. Even the very poor would have something in most cases.

Midwest and Northeast would mostly have it too. PNW is really the only area where it is not considered a basic requirement in a house.

This is why central heating is so common in houses, it is integrated with the cooling. Hearing about new residences being built in the UK/Europe with radiators is very odd to us. Only 100+ year old houses have them here.

Edit: I looked it up. 88% overall, and over 90% everywhere but the northwest coast.

it was 37-38 celsius and super humid all last week where I live in USA, it was brutal, felt sick if I stayed outside too long. my window air conditioner unit was $150 at Walmart, and it only costs about $40 a month to run in this kind of weather, money well spent. My life would be hell without it, actually, I'd probably just go to the library and find a place to nap, they keep it really cold in there, and then just open my windows at night and read. Can kiss gaming goodbye without air con where I live.

I love the 25 °C British summer, but anything above it is too much (unless you're on the beach of course).
