I cant tell the difference between SATA and NVME for OS (aside from page file and hibernate), I think it would be wasted in that role.

It's more the reliability/durability/longevity I would buy it for.

Reads and Writes should be around 3000 no?

Nope, bad option. It has a very small Optane XPoint cache with a 1TB slab of QLC NAND.

And may people correct here as needed, but didn't Intel kill support for Optane as cache from the 700-series chipsets forward?

Not pure Optane it's hybrid. Do not buy.

Go for P1600X, 905p or P5800/5801/5810X (if you can afford).

Several orders of magnitude higher endurance, lower latency and perfectly consistent performance, no fluctuation as controller juggles SLC cache. No need to trim. Can write/edit a single bit in a cell not the whole row. 4K/mixed performance on another level.

Can fill drive to 99% with zero performance degradation or difference from drive filled to 10%.

Also does not have the long term cell electron degradation issues that flash has if not powered.

People here dramatically overestimate how many bytes are actually written to disks. I'm up to 18TB on my Kingston A400 which has been in use continuously for five years now, across many systems.

About a year's worth of usage I already burned through 20TB although my workloads are probably not considered typical user stuff. ( Still well under 0.3 DWPD )

OS drive access is rarely linear, so the high-throughput runners are most useless. Optane does seek noticeably faster, so it might lead to a difference you can tell.

I'll probably get a 980/990 Pro 2TB as OS drive for my upcoming new build.
Since the better Optane ones are unfortunately too expensive to get where I live..

Look at the 5800X review if you want to be blown away.

I know its massively better on paper, but just pointing out the endurance of normal SSDs has reached very good levels at this point for basic OS usage.

I would be using a Optane for media editing, page file, maildir email usage, code compiling, that sort of thing. Just using it as a boot drive for Windows would feel like I am wasting it.

That's the only Optane at somewhat reasonable price, but I just want some more space than 118GB for my OS/programs drive....
Also I don't want a knock on wood situation when windows updates/ feature updates ready to get installed.

I'd move my programs to a SATA drive; then I'd keep a copy of my files on the OS drive with a backup on the SATA drive.
