Currently on sale too! The amount of callbacks and homage to the original RE and the series in general is on total overload in this game!

Heaven Dust
Isometric take on the perspective, but otherwise basically all classic RE/survival horror mechanics are here

Heaven Dust II
Heaven Dust II is a big improvement over the first game all around

Song of Horror
Song of Horror turns combat on its head. Rather than enemies attacking you and you as the player making the choice to attack or avoid, you now have incidents that take place based on fear levels of your in game character that are like little mini games or QTEs. it might sound dumb, but it works out well. the puzzles in this game are some of the best in the genre

Fobia - St. Dinfna Hotel
Also currently on sale!

This is mostly in the vein of RE7 but made by a small group of Brazilian devs. Some of that sticks out throughout the game but is still pretty good. Really liked the puzzles in this game too

It was for the gamecube, so it's largely a lost gem. That said, most of my other go-tos are already listed. If you want a tonal shift try Time Splitters....though by 2 the horror is largely forgotten and replaced with weapons grade cheese.

parasite eve

Still crossing my fingers and toes we someday get a modern-day remake, sequel, or requel to that series.

It's not exactly the same style as RE, but pretty close to my heart regardless.

I think it was because (at the time) we knew very little about mitochondria (it's also interesting what we've learned since that time). My girlfriend (at the time) had professors as parents (one focusing on anatomy/biology, another on technology) and it was interesting to discuss the ideas in that game with them; also argue with my girlfriend about what it was versus it's conceivable capability (fueled by the science-fiction of that game) and have her parents back me up.

Yep; always been a nerd...and appreciated a good (especially blonde) bob cut. Some things never change.... :toast:

I cross my fingers and pray that we don’t and Square leaves PE the hell alone. Yes, The 3rd Birthday traumatized me THAT much.
But hey, .45 Parabellum Bloodhound is supposedly a spiritual successor the OG PE, so…

That's kinda-sorta fair-enough, but I also don't think modern Square could/would do much to change that particular story; if anything it might give them a chance to re-imagine 1-3 (really 2-3) more coherently.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I'd still like to see something done with the franchise using modern-day technology/systems/gameplay. I don't have any great suggestions; simply feel it needs to be brought forward.

It's one of those games, kind of like FFVII to some, or at least the initial iterations of RE, that I don't want left in the past simply because of limitations of the resolution and/or CG quality of the PS1 era.

I feel the story (in some manner; at least PE1) deserves to be preserved in a palatable way for all time. I honestly wouldn't mind if it got the RE (2/3/4) remake treatment...I would actually probably champion it.

If they could clean up the story of 2-3, all the better imho.

It's half turn based combat, can't really be like RE

I know that; first thing I said was I know it's not exactly the same style as RE (hence probably slightly divergent from this topic, but I still love it).

I meant cleaned-up graphically and perhaps in terms of making the environment/story delivery more seamless, akin to (some of what was done in) FFVII Re(do).

I didn't literally mean to make it like RE; I meant to improve upon the limitations of the (CD) era and preserve it with more-modern graphics/resolution/CG/transitions, as was done with REmake(s).

Think of it as a template of how the two differed (original RE versus REmake) and then apply the same notions but similarly keeping the core/base of PE with a potential PEmake™.

Perhaps a better example would be what was done with Super Mario RPG (but would obviously require more work than just art; perhaps putting more sequences in-engine etc)?

ALLRight, the combat system would promise a good modern enhancement.

About the CG (3D pre-rendered videos !?), PE1 had the bests at the PS1 time, when out if i remember :p

Precisely. So did FFVII. Now it looks like Play-Doh. The benefits and draw-backs of the CD medium (versus alternatives/what came before, as well as vs what we have present-day) are on full display in PE.

Because of that (rudimentary [low-rez] polygons/FMV) it looked technologically-advanced at the time, but now looks dated. I feel it has suffered more than other titles (such as say, Chrono Trigger) bc of that.

Hence my argument. It's amazing what can be done in-engine now (look at FFVII) when largely up until this/that point it has largely been done in pre-rendered video in many games...certainly PE.

It also was always slightly obscure; it never had the limelight of the Final Fantasy (et al) moniker(s). I feel now-a-days that could/would change, as many vocal people have reverence for it (or so it would appear).

Or, at the very least, it's legacy wouldn't matter/work against it versus working on a different project.

It has the nostalgia and timeless(-enough) story; just not the notoriety cache of something like FF or RE...but that could easily change in the era of Youtubers informing the younger generation.

You can’t “clean up” The 3rd Birthday. It’s an abomination of a highest order. The story manages at the same time to be nigh incomprehensible nonsense and a complete character assassination for Aya. Like, it’s unsalvageable. The only sane thing one can do, if any sort of continuation of the series is in the cards, is to completely ignore it. Just pretend it never happened.

PE1 is fine as is. Just create an HD remaster ala FF8 if something really must be done and leave it be. Of course, seeing as how the rights issues might be in the way it’s hard to say whether it’s even possible. It’s not fully Squares IP after all.

Lol. You're never going to let 3BD let lay, are you?

I would argue most don't even know about it given it's weird release (kind of like Before Crisis, or even Crisis Core to some extent), but...I would argue most people don't even know about the series in general.

Those that cared probably do know about it...but that's also an incredibly small amount of people versus a potential modern audience. TBH, I think they could go in several different directions and it still work.

PE is a weird series, yeah. The first game did well, but hardly was a hit, especially considering the numbers FF7 did for Square at the time. Hence the decision to pivot the series more towards traditional survival horror with PE2, which was a good game, but fairly different from the original. After that, they’ve left the series dormant for a decade. I’d argue if Square actually wanted to do something with it they’d treat it better. Hell, nowadays it’s been almost 15 years since 3BD even. The fans do get agitated every time there are murmurings about a new PE, but it never comes to fruition, perhaps for the better. I’d argue that an indie spiritual successor to the interesting mix of JRPG, horror and action that the OG was is probably the best bet for that PE hit rather than waiting for Square to either try something decent with the series or, more likely, defile it further.

read the comments plz
I love Cryostasis, it's one of the unique game from Ukranian devs. You NEED to use nvidia card because the game made extensive use of PhysX (one of few games that uses it very well, it's a visual treat and when it was released a GPU killer like Crysis and Metro2033 but it's not a problem for today's GPU). A must play for me.

Cryostasis is pretty good. As long as we are on the topic of survival horror and slav-jank, I guess I’d be remiss not to mention Pathologic and Pathologic 2. They aren’t… horror games, strictly speaking, but definitely survival (and not in the way commonly thought of). Those two and another game, The Void, by the same developers are arguably the peak of what can be done with video games as an art-form, as so often many like to debate about. They are absolutely surreal, dense in terms of writing, frustratingly hard, almost unbearably painful and depressing and… among the best experiences one can possibly have with interactive entertainment, provided one can handle them.

Pathologic is fairly well known among connoisseurs, but The Void… oh, The Void (or Turgor, if we go by original name). That game lives in my head rent free since the day I played the original Russian release so long ago and makes me wonder why so few developers try to go for something equally bold. I don’t think I can even properly describe it. Might have to do a post mulling on it like the one @Princess Garnet did for FF IX. It’s just a very special, beautiful thing.

more RPG really. Game is fun though. Still surprised I never finished the Chrysler building.
