Help me pick an mATX b650 board for 7800X3D

Its time to get rid of my 8700K and unleash the 7900XT proper! 7800X3D time.

Im looking for the best board and RAM to pair with this cpu and frankly Im a bit lost in the woods.

Im sold on this case though, the smaller size and build options here are pretty awesome.. lots of power in a small enclosure and it seems my 330mm length GPU and ye olde Supernova G2 PSU is going to fit just fine alongside (possibly) the old Dark Rock Pro 3. Or do I need something better for these newer CPUs? Its going to be air though.

Ive been partial to the Asrock Riptide, all good experiences with the brand so far and it looks competitive... just no ALC1200 but ALC897 on it. Pref not a Gigabyte board (the options seem subpar too, but feel free to convince me otherwise If its a great value option Im game.

Since Intel fiasco i read 7800x3d everywhere, there will be stock to be restocked soon...

Tobascouz advised me KF560C32RSK2-32, there is BEAST DOCP counterpart, but this XMP for me look the best (zero problem at all XMP settings even Asus Tweaked, 1.1 SoC...).
I had Arctic Freezer II, buyed III, III is noisy, verry more perf in counterparty (70 buck btw, not 110).
The best MB is B650E-E, but not mATX i think

Even prior to the Intel fiasco which I knew was coming eventually because theyve gone to shit ... a CPU doing 60w for top perf is a no brainer to me esp in a small enclosure. Its just too good to pass up

I think you should wait about a week for the 9000 series to be released.
So you can get the 7800X3D slightly cheaper or reconsider the choice if any of the 9000 makes sense.

I think you should wait about a week for the 9000 series to be released.
So you can get the 7800X3D slightly cheaper or reconsider the choice if any of the 9000 makes sense.

If you're not trying to break the bank the B650M Mortar looks good, power phases / VRM cooling both fine.
You won't get Gen 5 PCIe, but 4.0x16 isn't saturated yet at all, and Gen 4 drives are still fine in my book (not flaming fireballs).

You hardly even need a VRM at all for a 7800X3D. Some mATX boards are a little light on their VRMs (mainly the Gigabyte 6 phase ones, e.g. Gaming X) but they're all DrMOS so it's not much of a concern. Riptide is probably one of the strongest options.

Just stay away from the vast majority of the Asus mATX boards (TUF ok). They didn't get the memo and are still using discrete configs that would be considered garbage even for AM4. Stay away from some of the lowest end mATX MSIs for the same reason.

The Corsair kit is Hynix, thus it should be good. 6000CL30 is a good decent bin. You can go all the way up to (some) 6000CL34 without becoming non-Hynix. At 5600 I think some CL30 kits are still Hynix. Just look for a big gap between tCL and tRCD on the XMP.

I'm not sure I would waste PTM7950 on a CPU with a heatspreader. It works its magic on direct die applications and idk if that phase change characteristic is going to negatively affect cooling if IHS is in play. If you wanna splurge, go for some Kryosheet or something. Accomplishes much the same but should perform noticeably better here.

ALC897 isn't insufferable like some of the even lower end stuff is (ie. ALC887), but neither is ALC1200 amazing. Just get a cheap DAC or audio interface for your headphones, if you are worried

Thanks for these insights esp on RAM @tabascosauz just what I needed. No PTM for this one then, def gonna check out kryosheet. Im also liking the wifi and bluetooth on it, making this a highly connective and pretty portable box altogether. Easy to move to another displsy like the oled tv downstairs... big plus

Curious how that Lian Li is going to fare with just a bottom intake dust filter but thats not a deal breaker. Gonna be a tight fit all things considered, a nice lil challenge after working out 3 builds in Fractal Define cases Storage options in te case are a bit limited so Im also adding a 2TB WD Black or lexar nm790 alongside my current m2.. or is it better to pay 10 eur more for a kingston fury with dram cache..

I'll vouch for Asus TUF boards. Only one I ever seen die was physical damage from the owner. All the other AMD builds I've done with them which is up to four now have had zero issues.

Cannot offer much advice for MB since I went full ATX. Current board has an ALC4080, which worked pretty well enough with no audible noise floor on what gear I had, and the 14-phase VRM barely warms up even under constant load, after I limited the processor to 65W. Could probably have done with much less, but there's no real overkill for VRM.

Corsair Vengeance 6000C30 kits are nice, and tunes pretty well in my (n=1) experience. I think mine is Hynix M-die.

I had a Mortar and it was a partial disaster. Dropped Ethernet often, barely could hold the i5 at any kind of tuning. Was VERY picky on ram. So happy it was sold.

Well, it is running my i9 12900K and Mushkin Red Line kit just fine, just like it did with my i7 12700F and the same ram kit, so I guess you got a bad board. Now I did have a similar experience with an ASRock Steal Legend bord and feel the same about ASRock now.

The 7800X3D really bothered me in non gaming task maybe it'd be ok for you gaming perfomance was fantastic though and it's pretty much plug and play.

I only grab motherboards that can easily handle every cpu that can go into it's socket becuase even if you don't plan on upgrading till AM6 why limit yourself.

My board has ALC897, it's fine.... I prioritized wifi 7 and dual 5.0 m.2 drives over the sound codec. I use a decent set of headphones with their own dac so no need but with my 2.1s it sounds more than fine.

Yeah I had the Tuf on my list but for a mere 15 eur more I can get the Mortar which is a lot more board feature wise, especially on audio and with optical spdif. Analog 3.5mm audio plugs are just not as reliable hooking up straight to a receiver. Optical is flawless and has a better noise floor.

Hehe yep and then Ive had a shit exp with Gigabyte one time... MSI is a new contender for mobo for me so its interesting too working with a new bios and all. Asrock bios is definitely finnicky. Its all there but cant say it rates highly in UI and making sense.

I already have a 7900XT. Thats the main reason to upgrade from the 8700K, its really holding the card back especially in the games I play most (strategy, 4X, build sims and even recent shooters).

Yeah it can handle up to 165mm and the DRP3 is just about that high, so I will leave that hooked up to the old system and get the slighlty lower Thermalright. 1CM is valuable here and it also weighs a half kg less, not a bad thing on a smaller board I think. RAM clearance should also work out fine as the Corsair ram is apparently just 35mm high

Whenever you think about paying premium for board with better audio, consider buying soundcard - likely being better and saving you such concerns next times. Plus being usable with other computers if we talk external. I doubt anybody would tell you where exactly is the difference between them getting better than typical onboard solutions, though. At least I don't know anybody online doing such comparisons and in the end it would encounter classic problem of talking about audio stuff - not hearing a difference suggests you're not competent or your hearing sucks, so let's colorize a little.

Going from silence-focused build I see in your specs to cute, compact computer is likely to end up as regret. I've built all kind of what I would call pc concepts, meaning stuff people commonly focus on like airflow, RGB or compact size and they are all just worse. Airflow cases sounding awfully and exposing all of the noises, RGB appealing on photos, but irritating with flashing lights and to bore you after week or month not giving anything more or small computers where I saw components I tend to choose running louder and hotter for the sake of tower being compact when owner not really needing it to be. There's just nothing better than pc built on reliability, low maintenance and silence, so good stuff put into sound-dampened case.

Ive found the Fractal Define to become a pretty hot case with the newer GPUs. Even the pretty easy GTX1080 would turn warmer than you would see in more open cases. The enclosure now is smaller, but it IS high airflow optimized, its a mesh case all around. If I run the 7900XT in my Define, I need to limit it quite a bit to keep it away from 100C hotspot. And hot components also mean higher fan speeds.

I hear you though. But its always a trade off and the current set of components I have/will get arent notoriously noisy; the 7900XT PG's fan noise is a very constant one too and really not that loud overall. I hear my system anyway, but its a world of difference from say 8-10 years ago. Its mostly air you hear getting moved, and you get that silenced case or not.

Worst case Ill just sell the lian li again and build back into a Define
