Actually to be exact, my controller is the white one which is bundled with an OneS, are the newer ones better?

The new ones have stick drift if that is your sort of thing. Same story with Sony. What I find particularly insulting is that Sony wants to charge £200 for a controller with exactly the same dreadful thumbsticks as the normal controller (which is already expensive).

I actually had a surprisingly good Chinese Dualshock2 clone, too bad that I accidentally snapped its cord so it broke. I was positively surprised that a 5EUR ebay controller was as good as it was.

Luckily I got a real Sony one from a friend with 5EUR.

My favourite DualShock 2 controller was a NYKO iType 2.

The thumbsticks aren't the same and can be swapped out. Replacements are $20 bucks though and are quickly cleared out whenever they are restocked.

To be honest, I haven't tried the original duke Xbox controller since the early 2000s, I'm sure that it would be better in my hands now than it was when I was a kid.

I have used an Xbox One S/X controller for all of my controller needs for years and I think they're very solid controllers. I've also briefly used a DualSense controller at a relative's house and I think both designs are decent. I think it's more a matter of personal preference. The Nintendo Switch "Pro" controller is terrible, though; why on earth does it not have proper triggers with axes?!

Logitech RumblePad 2 is almost identical to the PS2 controller and it is an upgrade in some areas compared to the PS2 controller.

This browser based tester makes for a good visual display how lopsided joystick input is and why certain controllers work better in certain games. Most newer controllers firmware updates deal specifically with how joystick/trigger response is programmed. There are a few examples out there of going from lopsided to perfectly linear or very exactingly inaccurate.

Note how squared off outside the circle the below is. Most controllers are intentionally programmed for this response out of the box.

I was using XBOX/S controllers. I don't really care about Wireless so that Mini USB port would fail after some time. Last year I bought the MSI variant and have to say it is my favourite controller. The price was good too $35 Canadian on sale.

That's what I originally had, but it was discontinued.

The F310/510/710 are the successor and are still produced (well, the F510 isn't, which is the direct successor of the one you posted, so you'd have to either drop the rumble feature or go wireless to keep it). They're more or less the same thing from what I remember, but the current ones include the then-newer XInput functionality (while retaining the old DirectInput functionality) and I don't think the RumblePads had XInput functionality so I'm not sure how well they do in games that use only that. On Steam it might not be an issue anyway though since it might take care of that?

I like how the current F series label/color the buttons as the Xbox controllers do though because games will detect it as one (due to being XInput) and those will be the on screen prompts you see, so if you're only familiar with the PlayStation controllers and not the Xbox ones (and this describes me), it makes it easier to know what button is what because the older ones just... give them numbers and it seems more generic.

I totally forgot about the squared analog openings of those. I always found that odd.

But yes, it's a shame there's no other early PlayStation era replica besides these, which is odd as you said considering how popular it was and for how long the design was around. I just wish they had a DPad like the original ones too. It's the one thing I don't like about these Logitech ones. But they're literally cheap as nothing, and I don't use the DPad enough anyway (though partly because of this) so it's the best thing for me.

I might be the odd one out. After years of back and forth I still prefer the 360 controller and no I haven't moved on to DualShock or anything.

On my retropie i like to use the Logitech Chillstream

On PS4 i use the original Controllers, and at PC i have a PS4 lookalike model from a store called " Action" here, that also should work with PS4 but i never tried it

I don't think the RumblePads had XInput functionality so I'm not sure how well they do in games that use only that.
On Steam it might not be an issue anyway though since it might take care of that?

On Linux, the Logitech RumblePad 2 worked automatically with most GOG or Steam games I played.
On FreeBSD, I use the app antimicro to map keyboard keys to controller keys, a technique that works fine for every game in existence.
On Linux, I also sometimes had to use antimicro, but less frequently than on FreeBSD.

I also had an Xbox and a PS One.
I found the Logitech RumblePad 2 more comfortable than the PS and Xbox controllers I tried over the years.
The Logitech controller was qualitative and durable as it still works perfectly after all the years without any noticeable controller drift.

Gotta give some love for Dualshock3 because its battery. I have my old fat PS3's bundled controller and IIRC it's from 2008, still holds charge for hours of gameplay with its original battery.

On the other hand, I got a Dualshock4 rev2 with my used PS4 slim and that needed already a battery replacement.

GameSir G7 SE. If I could change anything about it, I'd make it black because the white makes a great way to show off how sweaty you are, lol. Hall effect triggers and sticks and I've never purchased a controller before the previous one was dying. This is the exception to that rule.

Had a Xbox series X/S controller before and started drifting after a few months of Forza.

Even after all these years, this one my favorite. Not too big, not too small and always seemed to function no matter what hell it went through. Gran Turismo was my Fav game.

I don't think this model is in production anymore but this PS3/PC afterglow wireless controller works very well and you can replace the batteries easily and/or use rechargeable.
If not this I would go with a PS4 controller with 8bitDuo USB dongle to use it for PC.

The Logitech RumblePad 2 is my favourite controller, overall, but unfortunately you can't use it on many consoles.
For consoles, my favourite controller is the PS One controller.

Above is an image of my old PS One controller after 23 years of use. It works like a new controller.
But I also found this controller more pleasant to game than any Xbox controller or the newer PS controllers.
The Xbox/new PS controllers were mostly subtle downgrades in terms of comfort. And no essential features were ever added.
