I was setting up a PC for my dad recently, with a i5 7600k, 16 gb Corsair at 3000, a r9 380 and an EVGA z170 Striker. I was playing on it and installing some software for his work then I remembered that I forgot to check in some HDDs I had around that needed to be checked if working. Since the PC was not yet done( cable managed and shiet) I thought it would be easier that doing it in my main PC. After some HDDs, I switched back to the 240 gb SSD / 1 tb HDD, but when I tried doing something on the PC, I saw that I didn't have internet, which was strange since I've never in my life had Ethernet not show up in a pc. Besides the hardware change, I did mess around in the bios, a little with the CPU and the ram, nothing major.

I tried the following fixes:
Removed all but the essential, one ssd, one stick of ram, didn't work
Reinstalled windows, didn't work
Restored defaults in bios, didn't work
Reinstalled Intel Ethernet i219-LM, didn't work( it's still says that the device cannot start )
And in the end, rebuild the whole PC (also cuz I wanted the radiator to be on the top side ) and it's still the same

Maybe you guys can find a fix for it, I spent to many hours trying to find it and I hate that I don't have a USB wifi card on hand, to test the over all internet possibilities.

Here are some photos with the PC and with device Manager.

Thanks in advance,
Best regards, Artur.

Reset the CMOS and if the issue persists Flash the BIOS (reflash if latest). Iv had strange IRQ issues messing with certain bios options and at one point I flashed the BIOS once on a machine (which also contains the NIC FW) and the MAC was blank making it unable to be used, so I had to flash it again for it to work correctly.

A little inside for the time spent on this PC, I opened a beer when I started working on it and now, when I am going to sleep, the beer is flat ):

Flashing now, I hope the windows option for the flash is good enough

Ah, thank u, PC, I really wanted to pull the CPU out and put it back again, how did you know?

Never had an EVGA board, but does it have a flasher in BIOS? Haven't used those Windows based ones in 1½ decade outside of laptops.

Check services.msc, some services are dependent on others for proper function. I recently encountered an issue with 1 causing audio to not work.

Also find out how to implement DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES into Windows Registry so hardware properties will show all past devices that were installed.

Also use an admin elevated windows command prompt to do a netstat check and an ipconfig release and renew command.

Also swap ethernet ports on the router/switch or even a fresh ethernet cable.

Well now I think I bricked the bios, when trying to install the update. The error code on the mb is C, which is a bunch of things but probably bad bios. This has been the worst case of fuck around and find out I've ever had, from a fully functional PC to something that doesn't even boot, in a single day :)

Maybe the CPU socket has some thermal paste in it, or if I get out and put the CPU back in, it will be ok once again, but I don't know.

Any thoughts on what to do next?

Is it a dual bios board? Might be a way out, or maybe bios flashback feature.

Unfortunately, no. I'll get in contact with EVGA for a replacement bios chip, cuz the problem is that here in Romania, I can't even buy a replacement board, cuz they are kinda rare here.

Ebay might sell spare Bios chips. If they dont however then you'll need to pick yourself an SPi flasher/programmer tool and program the chip with a bios manually. SPi flashers are available on ebay and they should be on amazon too.

You can follow this guide here which explains how to use them. You may need to do it through linux though but there are some distros that you can run in a 'portable' mode off a usb stick so it doesnt affect your windows install.

::EDIT::

Also. Next time when youre in device manager. Click on 'show hidden devices.

and uninstall any hidden stuff under 'network adapters' Sometimes hidden devices can cause conflicts with other devices and if windows wants to reinstall whatever is you uninstalled then it can do it whenever it likes.

The problem with eBay is that I'll pay probably like 40-50 euros on transport, and with some 30-40 more, I'll just buy an ATX mb and a new case, or something, I don't think it's worth the effort. I written an email to EVGA, maybe they have a smarter option.

Thanks for the advice regarding the device manager tho, will try next time :)

Does the network controller show up under netcfg?
There are only two instances where I've seen the functional ethernet go poof.
Both of them involve nForce Ethernet and a squirrely QLogic SFP controller that overheats, taking out the entire network stack.
At that point a reboot is necessary.

Well before the whole PC was bricked, I did at least 30 frustrating reboots, but no luck

That doesn’t sound right. Have you checked the manual? I would be surprised if EVGA didn’t have a rescue mode

That doesn’t sound right. Have you checked the manual? I would be surprised if EVGA didn’t have a rescue mode
I'll see what I can do with EVGA support, I heard they are pretty good. Now, at this point, I would be content just with the PC working, without Ethernet, but with wifi capabilities.

I would be surprised to do RMA on a 7-8 year old board. Also, I wasn't the original owner and I don't even have the box it should have came in. But, if they are extra nice, I wouldn't mind such a thing. I told them that I'll pay for things, so maybe that helps a little.

So, if EVGA doesn't have a solution for it, I think I would buy a really cheap 1151 board, not even a main series. The problem is the case, cuz I don't know any non high end board that fit it, since it's a small phanteks and I don't think it fits anything bigger that micro itx
