It seems microsoft is deliberately discriminating against FireFox.
Works for me, though I am on Nightly's version (basically alpha version Firefox)

Ah, a store app. I don't use the microsoft store.

I looked into this. It seems microsoft is deliberately discriminating against FireFox. Sadly there's no evidence of this yet, but the situational info seem to lean very much in that direction. Not sure what else to tell you. I would recommend Iron( https://www.srware.net/iron/ ) which is a security and privacy focus compiled version of Chromium.

Have you tried ThunderBird( https://www.thunderbird.net/ )?

it's not an issue at all, as I said before I am content just using a different browser for outlook, in this case Vivaldi. it works fine on Vivaldi. still using firefox for everything else

Depends on the distro. Most source based distros still let you target hardware all the way back to the original 386, but they aren't near as user friendly. Outside that, some legacy distros probably build their images without POPCNT, but amongst binary distros it is pretty rare.

That's actually an authorized retailer. Got a link? I may take that offer. Hopefully its not some bizarre marketplace situation.
Check this then and see if it's valid: https://www.cdw.com/product/windows-11-iot-enterprise-ltsc-2024-license-1-license/8025005

24H2 is a nightmare.
even more crap bloatware to force remove with third party software, bitlocker is enabled by default with an offline account and then blackmails you into logging in to your M$ account imediately because you will not have access to the bitlocker decryption keys through your account.
my PC feels a lot slower (clean installation 20 minutes ago), the "new" task manager looks bad and bland together with badly rearranged settings like the power settings.
the new 24H2 installer is extremely bad... a blue screen with a white box in the middle where you have to pick your drive to install the OS to. for some reason all drives have another pseudo partition in the list that just says "free space" with a few kilobytes making a 4 drive PC with just one partition each + the USB stick with the installer a 10 item long list with very small text.

Installing 24H2 is literally a blue screen with "Windows installation is running" and a percentage below it cramped in the top left corner. the rest of the screen is completely empty.

i was cautiously optimistic but 24H2 is just way more Microsoft Bullshit all over again.
i genuinely hate it and want to go back to 23H2.

and you can not even customize/remove anything in here anymore! :banghead:

Edit:
My other PC just BSOD bootloop with 24H2...

Used ADK and removed all listed in my previous answer (appx/feature/packages), no problermo here when Rufus used to skip TPM, but yes, in VM VirtualBox it had Bitlocker big bad boy and i had to mess a lot to disable it btw (a shared hhd)

Anyway, i think the worst of all is WinDefender, ansd iremoved it (LOG), looks like it fixed me not able to use remove safely external disks (was broken even usinf USB safely remove third party tool, that never failed on me):

Ahh. I see Wordpad is being removed so they can charge you for Word instead....
Yeah that sucks. WinAeroTweaker can bring it back. Notepad too.

There's also Libre Office.

Again, if your goal is to boot up 24H2 on a CPU lacking POPCNT - not happening.

@theFOoL
It’s not a matter of rethinking. They would have to recompile and somewhat reengineer the entire kernel again. That’s uh… not happening.

@lexluthermiester
Sure, I am not stopping anyone from banging their head against a wall. Just that it’s been known for a while how the new kernel works, that the limitation is not artificial this time and that anyone with a passing understanding of software knows that certain things are just not possible.

Not without access to the source code, no. I am sure I don’t have to explain why this isn’t an option.
I mean, here’s a thread with pretty much all the info one might need information:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/1e6q46g
And, as someone pointed out in comments, with the latest kernel it isn’t just POPCNT. It’s the entire SSE 4.2 instruction set. So… yeah.

You could write a POPCNT (and now I guess SSE4.2) instruction emulator. But short of that, no. And it'd perform like ass anyways.

Not necessarily. Add in code to make it run on a second GPU and Bob's your uncle...
The latency on that would be awful and emulation never really performs excellent.

Plus no way you'll get those facilities at kernel time.

The emulator will have to somehow engage out of firmware since the boot uses the new instructions (or at least checks for them) too. If something like this would be done “janky” wouldn’t even start to describe it, not to mention it would be a security risk.
It’s easier and saner just to upgrade to a reasonably modern CPU is all I’m saying.

Yeah the best way I could see to do it is as an EFI or BIOS level driver (probably injected by a bootloader as a service) providing the additional cpu instructions while actually emulating them. This would probably never jive with secure boot either, but who cares?

If it was just POPCNT it might be doable, but all of SSE4.2? I would not hold my breath.

Also if we are really talking BIOS era coding of the core 2 stuff... hello undocumented nightmare town.

No one is suggesting something like this be run as a daily driver. This is just tinkering for the fun of it. @theFOoL is just playing around for giggles. He has newer hardware to run on and has Win10LTSC as a backup.
