Hi there. I am about to pimp my Xeon X5690 based ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution system with your genius solution. To save lots of back and forth on what's works, would you have a pcie-card+500G ssd combo to suggest? Regards from Montreal, Canada and adding the P6T6 WS as a confirmed rig.

i use a basic sabrent pcie 4x adapter which costs around 20 bucks on amazon. decent heatsink, provided with thermal pads. trick is to know where to put the thermal pads depending on single or dual sided nvme. i mailed the support and they explained me. i may look in my mail archive to find the info if you need it.

you ll get a max of 1800MB/s on PCIe 2.0 4x

to get more you need to spend a LOT more money, to get an "active" pcie adapter with a pcie switch. 150 to 200 bucks. any cheaper reference that _works_ interests me (lots of fakes or cheap chipsets on amazon.)

there s a reference in this thread, early pages, with 2 nvme slots, raid and all. can go up to 3600 MB/s if i followed things correctly.

as for the nvme. well. the big bad corean evil works fine. and is not too expensive.

Hi!
I know that OP won't come back to this thread. But here is my issue. If someone is able to guide me, I'd strongly appreciate it.
I have a very old (but excelent 15 years ago) system, running on a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 with 6x1Gb 2000Mhz memory banks, an Intel CPU i7-920 and 2 HD WD black of 1Tb each.
Recently I updated it from Win7 to Win10 since it doesn't match the requirements for Win11.
I replaced the memory banks with 6x4Gb 2100Mhz and it works fine.
Now I'im thinking of adding a SSD (aiming to a 2Tb Samsung 990 Pro NVMe 2.0). It's PCIe 4.0 and my mobo has 2.0, but I'll accept it working at 2.0 speed.
While searching which SSD would be compatible y stepped into this post... but I had no luck, surely because of my lack of knowledge.
I downloaded the 2 versions of BIOS for UD5 and I couldn't flash none of them, even with the original Gigabyte Flash program.
The error that displays in both cases is "BIOS Partnumber(AWARD) is not correct!".
Can anyone be as kind as to guide me thru this process?
Thank you very much in advance for the time you dedicated to read this post.
Best regards,
Pablo (from Argentine)

hello pablo

if i were you i d get my hands on a xeon too, 920 is nice but xeon are nicer.

more cores less heat more cache and cheap on ebay

i think i remember something about the checksums, but "partnumber" doesnt ring a bell.
is there a version on the motherboard (rev 1, rev 2) it s on the motherboard, physically

check if the UD5 has a backup bios and the method to restore backup bios if it is indeed dual bios
use usb boot FreeDos to flash. flashing under windows is dangerous.

i m pretty sure others flashed a UD5 so something else is at play here.

then once u manage to flash the UD5, you ll have to modify the bios rom to fit the reference of your nvme (guide in the signature) and flash again

finally once u flashed, dont put the nvme yet, have to edit the bios settings to disable sata3 and special gigabyte raid and extra controllers, else it will conflict with nvme rom mod

keep us updated. goodluck.

edit : better idea. do u have somewhere the original bios you flashed on the motherboard ? check the name and ref and version, that might help you choose. i see 3 bios for UD5, 2 for rev 1, 1 for rev 2. id you revision, it s crucial, it s between the pci slots.

Thanks for the fast answer. Check the uploaded CPU-z image, I thinks it's 12, but it's not possible, is it?
Regards,
Pablo

Thanks for pointing my mistake, now I don't get the error message.
I've been able to update the BIOS but when I try to restart it gets in and endless loop of power on/off.
I should get back with the old BIOS or is there anything I can do?

i had that in the past, it scared me but it was not a real problem.

try clear cmos (motherboard jumpers)
edit : the thing with X58 gigabyte boards is that they have troubles to sense the cpu configuration and memory training at first boot, retrying different frequencies goes through automated on/off. and after the flash, some settings from old bios (same version, but not modified) can mess up. so clear cmos (unplug power, move jumpers, turn on (nothing happens) unplug, put jumper back, replug, boot)

this should help. else, recovery bios should kick in if the bios cannot post, after a certain amount of tries, backup bios should take priority. (which is a problem on the long term in case something happens and you get on the bios who has no nvme mod)

also unplug your drives, especially the non ssd ones, on/off loops is bad for them.

Unplugged power supply and the two HD, pressed the CMOS clear switch, waited 30", plugged the PSU and it enters in the power on/off loop again.
It seems as if either the switch doesn't work or damage is worse than I thought. Any clues?

I have 2 USB sticks FreeDOS formatted, one with F13 BIOS version file downloaded from Gigabyte site and another with the modified F13 version file downloaded from this page.
The million dollar question is... how do I manage to install any of those sticks, if my machine doesn't finish the start procedure even to display the BIOS setup so as to choose starting system from USB drives?
Comments, suggestions, recommendations... all welcome.

Good news and bad news.
Good: thanks to next video I was able to recover my previous BIOS and to get my computer running again.
Bad: I can't manage to boot from any of my two USB sticks even if I can choose the bootable device pressing F12 key.
I'm wondering as they're of 16Gb and I have to format them using FAT32 and not FAT file system... I don't have any of 4 or 8Gb to test that.
Does anyone know if that maybe the reason of the boot failure?

Last update before going to sleep:
Being able to boot from USB, propietary BIOS update works fine, modified BIOS update keeps entering in power on/off loop.

the UD5 'non A' model was not tagged as tested in the list, so i guess something is wrong with it.
it could also be a memory settings problem, maybe try with a different memory module, something basic, like one stick only, and see if u can access the bios settings or if it keeps on/off loop.
i had a very similar situation, 6 sticks is tricky to get stabilized, as the modded bios has a different memory settings table, something could go wrong at first boot.

so you may try to reduce memory to a minimum, maybe use another slower stick you could have in reserve, and see if u can get out of boot loop or not.

if you do, it s a question of settings
if you dont, then the bios mod was failed and something is wrong with the file. they were not all tested, so it is a possibility.

goodluck

Well... I gave up. Had no choice.

Tried with only one module of 4 Gb in slot 1, updated the BIOS with MOD version, restarted... and entered in the damn on/off loop.

So recovered previous BIOS, updated again from Gigabyte site with @bios, reinstalled the 6 memory sticks back to 24 Gb and decided to abandon the chance of using a NVMe M.2 Samsung 990 Pro 4Tb at 299U$S and resigned to use a SATA Samsung 870 EVO 4Tb at 289U$S, both Amazon USA prices. Next time, next mobo, maybe I'd review the SSD option if necessary.

I want to thank specially to @MrPanda for his kindness, patience and guidance during this days of try&catch (sorry, programmers joke). I strongly appreciate your help and support, buddy. Maybe one day in the near future some genius arrives with a new modded BIOS for my UD5 and I'll be able to re-play David's role against Goliat.

Best regards,
Pablo

it s a shame we cannot edit the opening post. so for reference, Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 non "A" reference is a no go.

Pablo, i think you tried everything, in the end the most important is that your motherboard is OK and running. If you can put your hands on a UD7 someday (it s kind of expensive but who knows with some luck...) i can guarantee the result (rev 2.0 of the board).

meanwhile, make yourself a little gift and check Xeon's prices ;) (X5675 is a real treat, 15$ on ebay, can overclock 20-30% without problem. mine runs at 4Ghz)

also, you can try to find out some other nvme mods, i found some for Z68 boards in other forums but it was UEFI bios, different mod concept. and maybe someday a guru will debug what went wrong with this specific mod bios. i dont have this level of skill to debug it myself, but someone may find what went wrong with this specific rom.

best of luck in the future, keep an eye on the forum some solution may surface someday.

and to all other readers of this thread : may this be a lesson. nothing is guaranteed, and there is a risk, a real one.

When modifying the BIOS, it is recommended to delete the LAN OpROM. Most people won't use it. I have a few unusual cases. After removing the LAN opROM, it works normally. I'm also going to install the WD AN1500 on the MCP61SM-AM motherboard. Use the pcie1*16 slot to see the SSD power of pcie1*8.

hello yuhdiing

if you have a reference for a pcie 1*8 nvme pciex adapter, please share. those i found are x4, and the faster ones with pciex switch are very expensive.
