The biggest jump was definitely from the 6950 XT to the 7900 XTX. I try to avoid upscaling when I can so I went from average 90fps at native 1440p in most games maxed out to 120-144fps.

It's why I was so confused at all the "RDNA3 is a total failure" comments I kept seeing. This card smashes through so many games and won't get over 85C at the hotspot, it's very impressive.

As for the rest of the parts, not so much in terms of noticeable difference. Some benchmarks were a bit lower (CPU) even. But I felt like my rig was more future-proofed :)
its a failure only when you compare benchmarks, if it does what you want and you are happy to pay the price it asks then its not a failure... buy the parts you are happy with either amd or nvidia...

Pretty much! I went AMD over Nvidia for a myriad of reasons and it works great for me. Especially now I am running Linux, the amdgpu driver stack makes it so easy. :)

I mean, naturally. Nvidia's problem is and has always been pricing. But the primary thing to keep in mind is that Nvidia charges what they do because they can; and it's specifically because they have no competition that they do so. The 4080 Super's price cut was pretty much entirely designed to target the 7900 XTX, since it effectively closes the gap on whatever little realistic potential advantage it had on the original 4080.

We're talking about a card that had a pre-launch price cut because it obviously failed to meet its performance target. Anyone that was really willing to could see the thinly veiled "mea culpa" there, particularly since the 999 and 900 for XTX and XT price targets meant that at the time they were probably cutting almost completely into their margins to make these appealing. The 7900 XT's original price literally didn't make any sense at the time, being quite possibly the worst deal anyone could make back then, and for good reason, it was likely the one intended to cost 999 and the XTX 1200 - had it the ability to perform like the 4090 does.

Factor in the studio drivers, support and validation for pro apps, etc. - it's not even a contest anymore. The only scenarios where the XTX even barely keeps up are where raw memory bandwidth is needed:

And let's not forget that it took it 2 years of driver updates to reach the state that it is today. I guess i'm just not "nice" and "forgiving" when it comes to this, but I bet anyone who like me had an RTX 3090 in 2020 is going to share my view on it: they're 4 years behind at a minimum. Probably more, since I could run DLSS 2 back then and it still looks better than anything with FSR today.

Yeah Nvidia is ahead for sure in every way, especially software. But I still think the 7900 cards are good cards, depending on how much you pay for them and depending on what you do. I'd definitely be happy with a 7900xtx. Pretty much all GPUs have the potential to be a good card, it's all down to how much you can/will spend and what you get for that money. Heck even the old 6950xt can still be a viable purchase under the right conditions.

My itch is nonexistent. I hate rebuilding often, even though I do enjoy working on PCs. Just prefer my personal rig to be stable and just working. Seeing how I abandoned AAA games too there is not a lot of reasons to update. Though I will need to grab a new GPU soon-ish - mine is getting long in the tooth and I would like to have modern features and, y’know, AV1 decode.

Everything that card will do, a 4090 will do faster
Yeah, at a 60% higher price.

without any of the bugs, half baked features or stability problems. Nvidia's card is faster, more efficient, more stable, more feature complete - you name it, it's better than the AMD card at it.
What bugs? What half baked features? Why are we even comparing the 4090 and the 7900 XTX? They're not even in the same tier.

That's why it's expensive, and it sells even being expensive. The 5090 is going to widen this gap even further, and AMD has already said that they aren't even going to try to compete with it. Ouch.
Not everybody cares about having the top of the range. I don't, for example.

It's barely even holding its own against the much smaller and leaner 4080 barely 5% faster at raster
With a £100 lower price on average.

and gets absolutely humiliated when you put both to do anything with raytracing. The vanilla 4080 is at least 20% faster at a lower power budget.
Same again: not everybody cares.

Edit: There are two things that AMD is undeniably better at: price and Linux compatibility. As I've just ditched Windows with no intention of looking back, these two things limits my upgrade choices, which is fine - I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything anyway.

Only want the RTX 5090. Can never have enough graphics horsepower
Oh yeah!
5090 or 5080 would be awesome to have around the launch.
I wish to switch from AMD... I having trouble with their drivers.

With a case which supports a GPU in a vertical position, while I still can use the mobo's expansion slots.

I don't partake in toxic positivity.
I don't, either. But where you see glaring issues, I see none. My AMD experience (with the exception of the 5700 XT) has been smooth sailing.

Edit: Also, "we've already discussed this elsewhere" is not a valid point to support your claims. Looking at it like that, you shouldn't have even made your claims, as you have done that elsewhere, too.

No itch for me, still rocking the same system for 5 years now. All I’ve been doing is incrementally replacing HDD with SSD’s, and will be moving the OS to a Crucial T500 instead of SSD.

I did allow myself a mismatched upgrade to an RTX 4070 Ti Super earlier this year when the 2080Ti wasn’t cutting it anymore. Surprisingly, my cou has been able to push it pretty well! Since I am mostly playing backlogs and maybe a new game here or there, I’m content till it just stops working.

I'm very "itchy". I like to test new HW, but, because I'm not a YT-er, I need to spend the money I could for some hw, then sell it (sometimes for good price almost like I bought, sometimes way cheaper lol) and get a new one. I'm upgrade freak!:D

Wow, I told someone that they're easily impressed because they claim not to have understood a widely accepted thesis, I must be the Devil himself. Very unbecoming behavior of silly ol me.

I don't really care if I hurt your or their feelings. You're making a mountain out of a molehill. If my posts tick you off, you're cordially invited to put me on ignore.
No he was right. You turned this into some AMD Nvidia garbage and you have been continuously more combative. Take this public warning.

Getting to buy cool stuff for clients helps me keep the urge down.

I'm laptop shopping tonight for an ultra-portable for him to take on the road.

tiny laptops aren't really my thing, but I've always thought they were cool. I remember when small meant gutless, but you can get so much power in tiny laptops these days.

probably gonna go with this MSi.

What's the point in a laptop being ultra thin if it takes the same amount of space in your bag because of its screen size? Less structural integrity? :kookoo:

I'm more into netbooks (10-11-inch) when it comes to portability, but each to their own.

Sorry for the off, I'm just curious.
