Ah. Good to know. I'm planning (and delaying as much as possible) a transition from 7 to 10, and also adding a HDD to the system. Will wrap it in rubber so thoroughly that no sound can come out. But seriously, back when all we had were HDDs, I always suspended them on rubber strips.
It's not just Windows that will constantly wake up sleeping drives for no good reason. Synology and QNAP will also both do that unless you go and disable so much functionality that you've essentially turned them back into a local drive using an RJ45 connector instead of a SATA connector, and if you're mapping it to a Windows machine, then Windows will never let it sleep for more than a few minutes, regardless.

Scored a batch of 6 of these bad boys. 320 GB Caviar SE drives manufactured circa 2009, still new and unused. Got them for $5 a pop, just to offload some stuff from my PC. Very cheap cold storage! Was reminded if this thread, so here's a treat.

Also my 300 GB VelociRaptors. These were bought new and unused last year and have seen very little use since, practically still mint. Two if them are still sealed.

Are HDDs perfect? no. under standard windows 10, my drives are constantly being accessed for no good reason other than to torment me, thats thanks to the wonderful people at Microsoft. Is there a way to stop this? Nope! of course not! why on earth would we want that to happen, what is wrong with you son??? your drives are getting a good workout and so is your ears, you should actually be very thankful of us you know. And dont bother complaining about how folders in usb HDDs frequently stay unresponsive for 8-10seconds, haha thats just normal, even though it never ever happened on windows Vista and 7, that annoying ridiculous lag is normal.

I'm on Windows 10 and the only time my spinners spin up is when I access them through Explorer.

I still have 320 GB WD3200AAKS WD Blue versions of those drives from 2009. 2 of 6 ended up going bad but they were very quiet and cool single platter drives and worked well in RAID.

I think a pair of those exact drives in late 2007 may have just been the first new condition pieces of hardware I ever bought? I think so, because everything I got before that was used.

I then got a pair of the 640 GB version in 2008 or 2009, and a second pair in 2009 after they were renamed to Blue.

The latter pair I still have (though unused), and it might just be the oldest/longest kept parts of hardware that I still own.

They'll be used for mostly cold storage of some files that I mean to preserve for future use.

I have a very old 500 GB SE that used to be on my server, don't recall the exact model now. It's also from 2008 or so. SMART still checks good, but it has something like 60,000 hours of use in it. At this point I wouldn't trust anything important to it, but these drives are quite reliable. The seller still has some these that I purchased in stock, got half a mind ordering another bunch of them. Might do that.

Doing RAID or external enclosure? I don't mean to pry, only curious. Those Raptors are still excellent in a RAID5. While not AS fast as an SSD, they are competitive as a boot array when properly config'd.

Just running them single on an USB 3.0 enclosure for now. My current case doesn't fit them... maybe the next one. I had 4 of them installed while I had my rig on the open bench.

my H: drive (6TB) died yesterday. not even hdat2 could rescue it.
Sounds like it failed with the click-of-death, or a PCB-component fault, in many cases.
With a PCB fault, it can look like the software fixed it, but it fixed nothing!

If MHDD has no error during sector scan=Most likely a PCB fault.

As I do not want to have any drive failure I change them every 4 years.
Also I still have many HDD still working.
A 6TB is used for storing non vital junk (i.e. local game files).
Others are used as backup disks thanks to eSATA or USB/SATA bridges.

I still have some external HDD enclosures for extra backups... you know, just in case the flash memory tech fails in the other backups. I think relying on one tech only for backups is a gamble not necessary if you have access to other tech.

Sure i still use HDD, even old ones like this one from Samsung 26 years old!!! Stil working, no bad sector's. I use it to backup my games... :)

IMG_20241122_140945.jpg

Or this one from WD, spins at10.000 rpm, named Raptor, later names Velociraptor.

IMG_20241122_135915.jpg

And for someone that want to see the very different backside of that Samsung HDD... Unbelievable that they could make this so complicated already...
