Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed Launching on February 18, PC System Requirements Revealed

I liked the story of Outer Worlds. It wasn't anything special but they didn't pretend it was either. It felt like the goal was to write something decent, not great, and that is what they did and that is so much better than trying to write something great and not having the skill/talent to do so. And as such it worked well.

- IMO the goal should never be mediocrity. And that's why I always loved Obsidian narratives: they often dreamt big and aimed for the moon with their games, but real world constraints caused them to fall short.

You could always see the shadow of the shape of something truly magnificent in there, but it was ok to simply get something really good because it's a AA studio with severe practical limitations.

But now with MS money, instead of setting the sights high, they've counter intuitively set the sights... Medium... and while they hit the target dead on the target was never really aspirational in the first place.

And that's disappointing. Some of the magic is gone from their games now. But at least they get a steady paycheck so hey there is that.

I enjoyed Outer Worlds. It wasn't great but it was pretty good and certainly better than many other RPGs I played recently.
I enjoyed Outer Worlds more than anything Bioware has put out since Mass Effect 2.

Aside from the fancy skeleton being on the cover, it looks very generic, not just in character design, but in world design. Modding can fix the character designs, but it'd be difficult to improve the world design. I'll probably wait and see how it does in the long run in terms of story and gameplay, and if it gets any kind of modding support, before buying.

I don't have any hope for this company anymore after it abandoned Armored Warfare. And it seems I am right as this does not look different than the competition.

So it's this 1st or 3rd person view type of RPG game??

Obsidian claimed they would tweak some things after the last marketing release got dunked on, does anyone know if they actually changed/improved things?
The game is $70 and to me looks potentially DOA.
This is Forspoken 2.0 despite all the differences. Generic. Skippable. Probably not getting much post release love... Its even in the name. Avowed. What?! It means publicly announced. Like... find me a better word to spell generic and nonsensical.

Have you ever played Pillars of Eternity? I would describe it as grim, mysterious, and a bit of a lore overload. What would you consider non-generic fantasy?

Pillars and deadfire yeah. It was okay, and the world building while expansive never managed to grab me, neither did the game itself. It took effort to play through; combat wasnt very rewarding or fun, but rather tedious. Tyranny OTOH grabbed me by the balls and kept me playing; and then it ended before I was ready for it.

I think its not so much about generic as it is about presentation of what it wants to be and is. Almost every game in the Warhammer setting for example; not generic because everything in the lore just clicks and is downright brilliant. A Baldurs Gate 3 escapes feeling generic because the characters in it are done so well and you live their progression. Its the details that matter and make it non generic.

And some games just dont get that far, a lot of recent games just breathe that they dont and never will. Avowed breathes it. Doesnt have to mean the gameplay sucks though.
