I'm aware that most 12900KS CPUs had AVX512 fused off, though I'm pretty sure at least some of the early batches (see here and here) left it intact.

Assuming a 12900KS with AVX512 exists and isn't some QS unicorn, will it emulate PS3 games faster than a 9800X3D would? I know Golden Cove draws a lot more power than Zen 5 does under AVX512 load, but I'd be willing to ignore that if it's much faster than Zen 5. Something like a ~10 FPS difference on average I would say.

PS3 games? As far as I remember, and I Don't want to bust your bubble but, my 5800x is emulating PS3 games with my 6900xt no problem.
PS3 is quite old tech, I'm pretty sure either you have pointed out will do a good job despite being Intel or AMD

The 9800x 3d is a bit faster.

Neither of them draw a lot of power during rpcs3. But mind you, you can't enable avx on latest bioses and all mobos out on the market today will most likely have an updated bios. You need to go for some unofficial versions to do it.

TPU has RPCS3 running RDR as one of the CPU tests:

AVX512 did give a very significant boost at one point. I am not sure if RDR specifically benefits from that but RDR seems to be one of the worst case scenarios with popular games in RPCS3 making it a valid benchmark.

It's better to just emulate it on the switch tbh.

I could say the same for my Rocket Lake ES1 QV1L and GeForce GTX 1080, they don't have much trouble emulating Ridge Racer 7 but again that's not the point. I agree that either will do fine but I want to know if there is a noticeable difference between them, that's why I'm asking in the first place.
The 9800x 3d is a bit faster.
What's the average FPS advantage it has over a 12900KS with AVX512? Great to hear that Zen 5 is actually faster than Golden Cove though.

Thanks, but where is the 12900K or 12900KS with AVX512 enabled? That's the comparison I'm looking for.

I can't find any benchmarks that compare the 12900K in RPCS3 with AVX-512 on vs with AVX-512 off directly, but I can find someone on reddit who says their slightly overclocked 11900K with AVX-512 is only slightly faster than the 12900K without AVX-512, and RPCS3's benchmark that shows the 12900K with AVX-512 is about 15% faster than the 11900K.

So, it looks like enabling AVX-512 increases the i9-12900K's performance by about 15%. If that's the case, it should get about 49.9fps in RDR, which would make it very slightly slower than the stock 9800X3D, but not enough for the difference to really matter. The 12900KS would be slightly faster than the 12900K, probably effectively the same speed or slightly faster than the stock 9800X3D. The 9800X3D with PBO should be the fastest, but there wouldn't be much in it, and you probably wouldn't notice the difference.

Estimating based on multiple different sources might not be entirely accurate though, especially considering that these benchmarks didn't use stock clock frequencies, and performance will likely also be a bit different in different games.

If I had to choose between the 12900KS and 9800X3D, I'd probably get the 12900KS if I cared a lot about the price (I can get it new for £330); but otherwise the 9800X3D, as it's newer and more efficient, and you don't have to faff around with disabling E-cores and finding a suitable BIOS. But RPCS3 doesn't seem to benefit much from V-Cache. If RPCS3 is your main priority, a 9700X with PBO seems like it should be able also give about the same performance, at a much lower price.

9800X3D it is then, buying a 12900KS with AVX512 is going to be difficult and certainly more expensive than a 9800X3D. I can't believe the difference is that small too, assuming your estimation is correct.

I wouldn't mind modifying a BIOS to add a toggle for AVX512 and the old 0x15h microcode plus disabling E-cores, these problems are not showstoppers. It's mainly the FPS in RPCS3 that I care about, although since almost no one has tested a 12900KS with AVX512 going head-to-head with a 9800X3D, I'll settle for a 9800X3D.

Thanks for the informative speculation though, really appreciate it.

The difference is a nothing burger, I tested gran turismo mostly, I'd say they are pretty much equal but it's an adventure to find a 12900k to run avx on, id say it's pointless. Even if it was faster.

Games that use the Cell processor to the fullest will benefit from avx512. Basically only PS3 exclusive games like heavy rain, kill zone and resistance series.
