Its performance is yet to be known. If your PSU and case allow for that, I'd pick neither and go for a 7900 XT. That is if I were in a hurry.

Which you seem to be not. So you should wait for actual tests to emerge and then decide if it's a worthwhile purchase.

Unless reviews are out and the MSRP no one can make a valid suggestion.
If there is no hurry just wait a month.

Otherwise I’d pick a 7900XT.

Wait for RTX 50xx, likely will have faster options than a 7900GRE equivalent for $600.
RX 9070XT most likely will not be 7900GRE equivalent. And you’re forgetting the enhanced RT capabilities of RDNA4 that constantly is being advertised (the RT) in TPU in favor of RTXs.

I’m looking more to a 4070Ti Super perf at least in both raster and RT as the name suggests.
If 9070XT goes with $600-650 it’s going to be nice GPU because right now 4070Ti Super has $800+

And what RTXs will be available at the start of 5000series? 5090 and 5080? It’s typical for nVidia to sell out the bigger first and make available the middle and low months later. If that’s the case then we are taking about $1200++ options.

Any 50** series card will cost much more and in the $600 range give less for the money.

wait for the rx9070xt for 600-650$

It needs to be faster than RX 7900 XTX in order to be that expensive! Because it won't be, then the card is DOA.
So, maybe you could buy the old (2020) RX 6800 XT for $400.

The 9070 is supposed to bring huge ray tracing improvements. If that's important to you, then wait.

If it's not important, then you may as well wait to see any price drops on the 7800.

The 9070xt and 7800xt should have about the same die size and process tech (N5) and RAM and so the price in theory could be the same as 7800xt at launch. I.e. $500. The 7900 GRE was discontinued probably because it was AMD's lowest-profit card (its essentially a 7900xt with 4GB less RAM). So I think AMD could happily price it at the most common 7900 GRE price of $529. It will easily beat a 7900 GRE which overperforms on benchmarks and underperforms on games.

Based on RDNA3.5 in laptops, the RDNA4 speedup is 15% per CU, so the card will act like a 7800xt + 22% since it has 7% more CUs. So if the 7800xt is $420, then a 22% faster card would be worth $512, but it ray traces like a 4070ti which would be better raytracing than a 7900xtx.

Or probably the highest-profit card because it is made with salvage dies which don't qualify for RX 7900 XT which means they go directly in the bin.

I tried reading the OP.

Also I doubt AMD will for once have smart pricing on release, so $600 checks out.

This is the classic question of how much of a rush are you in? The odds are in favour of RX9070XT being the better choice if you can wait. The first game requiring ray-tracing is already out, so the increase in RT performance is worth the wait imho.

I tried reading the OP.

Recommending Nvidia when the OP asked specifically for comments regarding two AMD products count as reading the OP? Roger that.

Yes, I try to make good recommendations to people instead of what they might want to hear or what the echo chamber says.

Plenty of people on this forum happily recommended cards like the 7900XT or the Zen 2 CPUs over faster 10th gen, just because AMD.

Meanwhile with every GPU test bench update and new tests, "equivalent" AMD cards get slower to their relative NVIDIA competition. 4080 is now faster than 7900XTX in general, for example.

4070 is now equivalent to 7800XT, on launch the 7800XT was about 5% faster.

Fine wine I suppose works for older games, but the newer engines often have RT on by default, with software RT as the fallback, so it's a pitfall there on current AMD hardware.

With the conflicting leaks surrounding the 9070 I suspect both are correct in a way. I.e 7900GRE raster and 7900XTX RT, which could be good, depending on pricing, which in all liklihood is too high at launch.

4080S tier performance is delusional I suspect.

I will agree that people should recommend hardware beyond the request. Its sane and might open thinking of any OP.
But I never see you giving AMD the benefit of a doubt. Not 1 mention like wait and see what RTX5000 and RDNA4 will offer. Just to entertain the option(s)
Never
Always straight to nVidia. Like you have personal gain over it. I dont get it....

Rumors say a lot. And for RT specifically its been said even like 40-45% over 7900XTX. Maybe raster will be 7900GRE or 7900XT or 4070Ti or what ever.
In the end it does not matter what the exact performance will be unless we have a definitive price too and how will stack against competition.
You want to call yourself unbiased? Maybe stop looking at nVidia like you're side blinded and nothing else exists.
Just maybe...

Again, looking at it as sane as I can... I do not get it.

You might as well wait for the new one since it is coming next month. Seems fairly simply to me really.

Yes, I try to make good recommendations to people instead of what they might want to hear or what the echo chamber says.

You're not making good recommendations, though. You have to couch them in "likely", "I doubt" and "I suspect" because you're recommending a thing that, in addition to not being out yet, we know less about than the 9070.

I tried reading the OP.

Also I doubt AMD will for once have smart pricing on release, so $600 checks out.
Nvs are not smartly priced and the guy asked about 2 amd products so why continue, you act like you are being paid by nvidia to push it. Every amd radeon thread you pop in, it is technically off topic.

Let's just say that...

1. Recommending any product that isn't just not out yet, but we also don't know much about, is foolish, and

2. Waiting for a product announcement that is only a couple of weeks ahead is always a good idea, either for the product itself, or for price drops on the last gen.

I'll refer you all to this thread where there's interesting discussion and links going on regarding how each month AMD cards get slower vs their competition from both Intel and NVIDIA, due to newer games being tested, and those vendors offering much more modern hardware. Then you guys are welcome to go back to recommending AMD cards. Just so OP and other readers are informed.

FWIW myself and others have predicted this for years.

Yes because of the integration of RT into the game engines, we know
Move on... We are talking about RDNA4 here too.
What if the RDNA4 has enhanced RT? What if FSR4 is much better than previous?

You didn't even seen it and dismissed already because of the past. Its called "bias against/in favor of"
Nice try

RDNA4 could be as "bad" as the past. I am sure there are many waiting in the corner to point out ASAP the slightest hiccup.
But lets see it first...
