I know its not much but I bought myself a new keyboard. I had an even cheaper 'rii' keyboard before which looked really cool, but it was a bit on squishy side and then the paint started coming off the keys. I have a regular logitech keyboard with narrow keys as a backup but I wanted something a little more exciting so I was looking at this MSI Vigor GK30. I was mulling over it for a while as it was sitting at $50 CAD and my car is currently broke down and idk how much its gonna cost to repair so I was kind of hesitant, but as soon as the expected delivery date passed Christmas it dropped to $35 CAD and at that point I couldn't stop myself. Seemed like a good deal.

It feels really good. Definitely more feedback from the keys than that Chinese brand. Its not real mechanical, but its blue switch, so it feels kinda like it is. The rgb is nice and it can be modified by software unlike my rii keyboard, so thats a nice to have as well, but I'll probably leave the rainbow since that matches my other components defaults and that way I don't need any software running to keep everything matching.

I felt like the stands were a little too short so I used some double sided tape to put a little bit of cork to push it up a few more millimetres. And yeah. Now it feels even better. I'm happy with this purchase so far.

System Name Never trust a socket with less than 2000 pins
I decided to make a machine stable that is special to me.

This is for a Supermicro H8QGI+-F, a 4-socket socket AMD G34 system which I run with 4x 12-core Opterons 6174, for 48 cores. My current heatsinks don't do it for the 12-cores. It also has 32 DIMM slots, muhahaha.

It is kind of pathetic that I have to still use this thing from 2010, but the truth is that no cost-competitive high core count system has come forward.

This is mostly for writing and optimizing multithreaded programs.

I finally got around to using the VP16-OLED Viewsonic monitor a bit, and confirmed it's pixel layout with the below macro shot from my phone (Pixel 8 Pro, previous shot was from an online review):

PXL_20241219_230509011.RAW-02.png

Yes, it's that same weird diamond pixel layout but at least it's not pentile, and the fringing surprisingly is not bad (probably because red is still on the left, blue on the right?)

Also, it unofficially supports freesync on the HDMI! Flicker free too! Although, the range could be better.

Untitled.png

Still, nice to have any range on a display that did not advertise it. Overall I am very pleased, and yes, it is a full 400nits with NO ABL! It can burn retinas at full white people!

Also, one insane side purchase I made because it's been a good year for me:

PXL_20241224_011612500.RAW-02.ORIGINAL.png

One very fast drive, a NIB P5800X! Don't ask what it cost though, it makes baby Jesus cry. Anyways, it wasn't really worth it but it is still one of the fastest SSDs in the world.

And yes, note the manufacture date. Intel was still making Optane as of late last year... Would not be surprised if it goes beyond that.

Not a purchase as such, but someone gave me this, which used to be one of the best typing keyboards out there. Needs a bit of a clean and as my current motherboard lacks a PS/2 port, I have to find an adapter as well, to see if it really was as good as I remember it being. Tips on good PS/2 to USB adapters welcome.

I got a 60ft Cat 8 cable to run my new internet to my office and utilize the 2.5G port on the new compy. Then to setup a new TZ370 and see what Spectrum does with their router, gonna put it between the modem and router for a few weeks before fiber gets installed at the office it belongs to.

platform upgrade from an old AM4 system, very happy with it so far, and now gives me room for future cpu upgrades.

Ryzen 7 7700x

Everything else from the AM4 system transferred over nicely.

Kitchen. it's damn cold outside, my kitchen has a door with direct access to the garden so it's coming inside to work on it. I could even set the odo to the milage that was on the stock clocks. The only thing is, i need to play with resistors in the fuel gauge line to get it accurate enough.

Here is the gauge, it's pretty nice.

16:10 100Hz. I have been waiting for one for so long. One day I was browsing shops and bam, I got it. Somehow I missed it when it was released.
Oh man! I love 16:10. I had such a hard time moving to 16:9. The 16:10s just disappeared and there was nothing to buy. This was like 10 years ago so I can't remember exactly but if I did find any 16:10 for sale, it was way out of my price range. Super jealous! Though I suppose I am used to 16:9 now.

People tell me once you try ultra-wide, you can never go back. For me, I'm not so sure.... because even this small widening of my display bothered me.

Yeah, I hear ya. I went from a 34" 1440 ultrawide 144hz, which I did really like, to dual 24", which I like better. Granted I have tried triple, quad, single UW, single large, etc. and here I am, back at dual screens.

Ahhh that wash/cure station.....on my wish list now.
1. I stick on the classical image if an IT Profesional. Drinking coffee and smoking. But i only drink about 6 400ml cups of cafe aux lait per day. I grew up with that. Influenced by my grandfather. He was a french one.

2. I did want to have the bigger Phrozen wash/cure-station. They were rebated. but two or three days before I did want to buy they stopped selling on the old price. And the new total was too high. So i plan to buy them in 2 years. After the printers for production. I have to be honest. I plan to open a 3D Print-Shop. And since a couple of time i buy all the stuff for it. First the workstation. Then the hardware around the working desk. After the printing farm and at least all the mateiral needed to run th shop for one month.

The unemployment agency told me that i won't work anymore because of my handicapped foot. So i decided to "build" my own job.

Picked up the Drive for AUS $107.00 and the Graphics card for AUS $780.00 . Both a good deal especially the GPU compared to a GeForce with 16GB around AUS $1400.00, which 1440p is needed
for my system. Benchmarks are looking sweet

Do you need active? The "blue cube" USB adapters work wonders for IBM Model M's, as well as pretty much any PS/2 keyboard. Unfortunately they seem to be out of production. Look like this:
