Advice please - AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT - PC Restarts

Hi guys,

I'm looking for some advice please...

I've been playing the same game (COD MW2) for over a year now. Took a break over the last 2 months, then started up my PC (Gigabyte Z690 running i9-12900 with Seasonic 850W PSU) to play the game.
After less than 5 minutes in the game, the PC randomly restarted. Checked logs, no messages, no errors, no evidence as to what caused the crash.
I now have the same issue whenever I try to play this game.
If I reduce all quality/video settings to basic/minimum, it lasts longer, but still eventually restarts.
If I increase the quality/video settings to ultra, it crashes as soon as the map loads (it used to handle this fine).

GPU temperature isn't going above 55.
CPU temperature isn't going above 35 (water cooled).
Have tried increasing fan speed to maximum, keeping temp below 50, but still crashes.

As a temporary measure, I'm now using my internal intel GPU, but the game quality is unbearably poor and unresponsive.

Done all updates, drivers, software, BIOS... Still the same. Removed and reinstalled everything, still the same.

Is my GPU card fried? Or could the restarts be due to something else? My system is only a couple of years old and has worked flawlessly until now. Not having any other issues with any other applications, including 3D Benchmarking.

Any advice?

Have there been any updates on to that game since your break and coming back to it?

Do you play any other games?

In my own experience, Call of Duty is notorious for updates breaking the game on some configurations and you just have to hope they resolve the issue. Have you opened a ticket with their support?

I had a similar experience with my SF750 and several GPUs (Vega 64, 5700XT, and RTX 3080) all in the same PC (not at the same time). I found out it was because of a faulty PSU.

In my case, the Windows Event Logger would just just a Kernel-Power error with nothing indicating a hardware/software crash. Some time later I eventually found out my PSU had a recall, and after RMAing it with Corsair, the replacement has been running perfectly without any more crashes. I don't think it was due to any specific power draw/temp issue, because mine would crash even if I dropped the GPU power levels below 100% and dropped clocks as well.

There have been a number of updates over the months (seems to be one a week!), which I've applied. I've also done a scan & repair, plus uninstalled & reinstalled.

Haven't tried any other games (cod is the only game I play) but might give this ago tomorrow.

Have reported bug to Activision but no response (which I'm not surprised about). Not heard of anyone else having same issue.

Update... Tried another game (Diablo), all fine. But this wasn't stretching the GPU at all.

I just tried Heaven Benchmark again with full stress test on Extreme mode and the PC restarted about 75% of the way through testing. My sensor monitoring was reporting hotspot temperature around 100 degrees and 99% GPU load. So at least now I know it's not specifically the game.

After this, I decided to try some new settings on the COD game... Resolution at 1080p instead of 4k and quality settings at Minimum. I didn't even load into the game, just left it on the main menu and the PC restarted after about 3 minutes. The sensor monitor wasn't even showing any excess temperature or load, everything was reporting healthy (CPU, GPU, PSU).

The GPU came with the custom build that I purchased around 18 months ago. Like I say, it's performed flawlessly in all that time.

It could either be a power issue or a thermal issue. Where did you purchase the custom build from or did you build it yourself??

Ok please get a picture of the white sticker labels on the card and a gpu-z screenshot.

You did clean your heatsinks right?

I purchased it from a friend who does his own builds. Like I say, it's been perfect for over 18 months and he has a ton of experience building these units without issue. I've asked him for his opinion and after suggesting drivers & BIOS etc, he suggested swapping out the GPU.

There are no stickers on the GPU itself. Attached is the GPU-Z screenshot.
Haven't cleaned the heatsink yet, as the issues have been happening at low temps. Still worth doing?

Things now appear to be getting worse...
Following some advice, I removed the display drivers using DDU (in safe mode) and then reinstalled an older version of the AMD drivers from scratch.
Since doing this, the PC seems to randomly restart when it's hardly under any stress at all.
Even when I try to downgrade the driver to a previous version (or upgrade to the latest one) it gets midway through the download/installation and the PC restarts.
I'm now having to use the integrated GPU for everything (and no reboot issues whatsoever).

Scratch that... It's now starting to reboot when using my integrated GPU. Officially scratching my head now...

And now the PC won't even boot up!
Says it's trying automatic repair, which fails.
Only option left available is shut down or advanced options to reboot in safe mode which fails!
Have removed the gpu but still have same issue, so thinking the gpu might not be the issue now!

Being a gigabyte card i would change the thermalpads and paste, but it appears you have bigger problems to figure out since it fails on the igp too

Run memtest86 on your system to find out if memory is unstable.

Can you provide us the complete system specs (cpu, ram, motherboard)
