To be fair at most a month I doubt 5080/90 buyers are gonna be blown away by the 9070 series... At least show some benchmarks that let potential 70 series buyers know an alternative is coming....

AMD RTG team has really evolved from shooting its foot to high jump on a landmine. Cannot remember worst cock-up of any hardware launch last 2 decades. Even that nVidia horsesh*t unlaunch of 4080 12GB was lesser joke than this. Cards shipped, 23rd Jan release date and now this... My guess is they are waiting for 5070/5070Ti launch/performance/price and go to classic "nVidia -10%". And that suppose to be "clawing back the marketshare".

The 2900 XT was much more brutal because they could not get the chips working and were still spinning up new silicon 8 weeks ahead of launch, and even with THAT new silicon they had to drop the clocks for stability/thermals and cancel an entire board assembly they'd spent 6 months working on just to get a product out the door. It was a series of engineering hurdles that they just kept tripping over month after month.

No, this is far worse. AMD has final revisions done and set, working cards assembled, boxed, and shipped, with an announcement already made... And for some reason they delayed. This level of ineptitude is entirely self inflicted by poor management, snotty bean counters, and self-important pencil pushers. At the very least when an engineering team struggles to deliver it's understandable; ASICs are hard to design and they take hundreds of thousands of man hours to create. It doesn't take even a hundred of people one hour to attach a price tag on a finished product and set a release date.

I think that getting the products right in the beginning is important. And they probably cannot compete with upcoming 5080 and 5090 anyway, so there is probably no significant damage to be made by this delay.

Midrange GPUs have launched around the same time since forever. Don't ask me why.

2) The most probable is, that they concluded that multi-frame generation will really be necessary and they need to make sure it works properly for the reviews. I would guess they are pretty far in development and only some final stages of validation or minor optimisations need to be done.

This delay may have happened after some feedback from reviewers, who discovered something they missed.

I think that getting the products right in the beginning is important. And they probably cannot compete with upcoming 5080 and 5090 anyway, so there is probably no significant damage to be made by this delay.

I cannot imagine another reason for the delay than these.

Not getting ahead of Nvidia is bad, but getting ahead with the physical product with broken drivers and only a pinkie promise that FSR 4 would ship sometime in the future would probably be worse.

I just learned that the 4070 and 4070ti are coming out in February (I thought it was later), that is very unfortunate for AMD.

When was the last time a broken feature stopped amd from launching though?

In the past if there were a severe issue with the hardware they would have imposed a recall with distributors, which does not seem to be happening. There's a distinct lack of evidence of this being a crippling bug somewhere, as leaks and demos have shown the cards are more or less fully functional and even quite potent.

I don't believe reviewers have cards yet. Retailers and distributors, yes. They have to stockpile inventory much farther in advance, albeit not 70+ days in advance. Media and reviewers, no.

I also believe getting it right in the beginning is important. That's why you don't announce early and bungle the release of information when all eyes are watching you at CES. When you go to launch a product, launch it. Time, place, price, availability. None of this, "We'd like to announce that you should stay tuned for our future announcement which will include the launch details." Which then goes on to be undermined by exactly this; rumors of delays for price adjustments, hardware bugs, driver bugs, delivery problems, etc. None of this makes the product look desirable.

We already know that they aren't competing with the 5080 or 5090, there has never been a "probably" about it. AMD straight up admitted it, and conceded the entire top two rungs of the performance ladder to NVIDIA before they even confirmed the name change on RDNA4. The delay is damaging because where AMD does compete, with the 5070 and 5070 Ti, they are now appearing absent. They're instilling a sense of doubt into consumers by jumping the gun and in the same breath pulling back on the reigns.

I agree. AMD should fire 70% of the marketing team. And hire more for the windows amd gpu driver department. I also miss basic features for my gnu gentoo linux. No fan control and other nonsense for my radeon 7800XT possible. The drivers are poor. Just stating facts. It's not like I used that windows bug symbol several times to fill out bugs, which are still there yesterday.
I started to play Avatar again from Ubisoft. Same bugs as over a year ago with the windows 11 pro amd windows gpu driver. Really annoying with those profiles.
The 30% remaining marketing team should be also fired and some technicians hired so the tech specs are correct and fully stated for the product pages. Especially for AMD CPUS and AMD GPUs. Documentation is poor, very, very, very, very poor.

I'm criticising basic functionality. AMD should remove all those profile and tweak nonsense for the windows amd gpu driver or get it finally fixed so it works. Which did not a few hours ago in windows 11 pro with ubisoft launcher and avatar. (25GB update - same old installation as a year ago )

Note: I bought a Asrock Challenger 6600XT 8GB D when it was a few days old. I hardly bothered tweaking it. Low entry card with a ryzen 5800x at that time.
I bought a MSI Radeon 6800 Z trio. RGB Bar was not able to turn off for the msi card. Here the mess really started. I did not bother much with tweaking with the 6600XT. High idle consumption. High game consumption - although changing a few settings in the amd gpu drivers reduced the consumption for the radeon 6800 non xt. AMD software forgets all the settings. Worse gnu linux had the same issue as windows 10 or 11 with the high memory clock bug and very high consumption with additional 30 or 40 Watts in idle on a single whqd screen with 75 Hz for the radeon 6800 non xt. AMD did not read out correctly the EDID values - the settings which are reported over displayport from the monitor.
Game profiles are not remembered or not applied to a running game. One or more time opening and closing the game, sometimes the launcher, sometimes a windows reboot - so the game profile is applied. This can be easily seen when you set a fix fan curve, all 5 temperatures are set to a certain fan speed with the zero fan mode disabled. Happend with the sold 6800 non xt and the current powercolor 7800XT hellhond graphic card.

Driver woes. The need to downgrade the windows amd gpu driver because it stopped working a few months ago.
Windows 11 pro 24h2 - the amd tray icon next to the clock in bottom right - does not open. Windows need a reboot or several reboots.

windows 11 pro never showing up of the tray icon. Using the windows button and typing for the amd gpu driver and hitting enter opens the amd gpu driver window.

All these issues I saw since the 6800 non xt and the 7800Xt. I expect that current graphic cards are supported and work flawless for the basic. I'm not talking about a new game crashing. I'm talking about the bare minimum. When a feature is offered it should work. I also expect low power consumption while gaming and in idle with a single whqd monitor in 75 Hz - for both windows 11 pro and gnu gentoo linux.

Going back to marketing. No facts about the new graphic cards. Useless pictures or leaks about the cooler or packaging. Useless marketing gibberish about some non existing features and non purchasable graphic cards.
