Anime Nation

Just got done watching Sword Gai and realised that I didnt have the second series with me on my trip. Really big sad.

Also got done with Goblin Slayer which was most excellent. G.S really reminds me of G.I Robot from Creature Commandos

Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island - which was a cute little side movie.

Im about to start watching GATE but I also dont think i have the second season of it. Double big sad.

GS- is like Mushoku Tensei in a way, never knew of Creature Commandos- I'm used to DC like Batman/Superman/Teen Titans/Static Shock etc. GI Robot reminds me the the Iron Giant design in the face (For a Kids movie it was a masterpiece-just wished there was another), or a Mechanical Samurai in 7 Samurai.

Definitely a Ton of Gundam series, I saw G Gundam but need to watch the others and Also figure out what Wing is in.

GATE- is that an acronym?

There are only 24 episodes total (2x 12-episode seasons)

GATE- is that an acronym?

Gate: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri (Gate: And so the JSDF Fought)

A gate appears in Tokyo's Ginza district sometime in the 21st century. From the gate pour out monsters, knights from middle-age Europe and other fantasy-like beings, and they kill many citizens of Tokyo. This event is known as the Ginza Incident. The government sends a small group of soldiers from the Japanese Self-Defense Forces to the alternate world beyond the gate. Led by otaku soldier Itami Youji, they find that the villages in the world are being attacked by a dragon. An elf girl who is a survivor from the dragon's rampage joins the group in their travels across the dangerous new world.

Gate is okay. Very much an isekai harem power fantasy, just with a slightly different twist to the power aspect. Rory best girl though.

Armitage is awesome. Check out Cyber City Oedo 808 if you haven't seen it. Iria: Zeiram the Animation is also excellent and they all have a similar vibe. They are also all short.

I'm a new poster here, and seen hundreds of anime since I first saw Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2032 on a tape at a friend's house when I was 8 years old. It blew my mind.

A little about me:

My favorite anime is Serial Experiments Lain. I have also seen Texchnolyze, Haibane Renmei, and NieA Under 7 by the same artist.

My second favorite anime is Urusei Yatsura, the original. I have also seen all of Ranma 1/2 and Maison Ikkoku by Takahashi Rumiko. And I actually can't decide between Urusei Yatsura or Lain as my favorite.

I prefer psychological thriller anime like Lain or others that make you think. A modern example would be Psycho Pass, and I enjoyed and had no problems with the second or third season (I forget) that had a different director and was maligned. However, I have also seen many more currently popular Isekai shows, and slice of life shows that I enjoyed. My favorites being Net-juu no Susume (My Life as an MMO Addict) and Non Non Biyori.

The majority of my anime collection is older but it's pretty diverse, and as stated includes some more recent stuff too.

Anyway, that's my introduction, just from skimming posts I can tell this is a great thread filled with classy people.
I see you are a man of culture...
Texchnolyze, niea, haibane, ranma, NNB, PP, Lain...
You watched good stuff...

Isn't Gate literally sponsored by JSDF / Japanese Military? They're very hoo-rah about showing off their weapons and how awesome being in the Military is, so I've kept hearing that as a rumor.

Nothing wrong with some pro-military propaganda mind you. I enjoy my fair share of it from any country. But there's just a lot of signs of possible official sponsor ship here that intrigues me given how detailed the military acts.

Unfortunately, the actual story wasn't for me.

Soroiro Utility looks like a fun Moe Golf show. I'll be checking it out for comedy.

Hmmmm. Minami is nerd-moe, obviously the girl who is designed to fit in with Otaku kind of an audience. She plays lots of video games, makes lots of video game / gachapon jokes, she's bad at every sport and is currently not part of any school club. (gasp!!!) On a random occasion, she helps an 80+ year old man who was struggling to carry a large bag in a parking lot. And as she carries his bag into his destination, she realizes its golf clubs and she is helping him walk to a driving range.

At the range is Haruka is an actual serious golfer who is practicing when Minami walks in. And Haruka is super excited to see someone new walk in. So she definitely pushes Minami to take some swings and... even pushes Minami towards playing a round of golf on a short course by the end of the 1st episode. For any golfer, this is going way too fast. But Minami is clearly n00b, but has a good attitude about the whole thing. And Haruka's love of the game is certainly contagious.

I don't know what I was expecting from the 1st episode, but... its not bad. I'll have to watch more before I give solid recommends, but this actually has promise. The bar is set low: "Have that ONE good shot that makes the whole round of golf worth it", which is honestly the best way of looking at this difficult game. But I'm sure in the 2nd episode we will see just how poorly the round of golf goes. Hopefully the n00b Minami gets some joy from her first round despite literally being on the 2nd day trying this game (Haruka is obviously way too excited about pulling in a newbie here, lol).

I'm somewhat curious if this will take the more traditional sports anime where Minami / main character has hidden talents and becomes an expert quickly. But that'd bore me and it isn't very "golf" like for that to happen. It seems more like this show is going towards just Haruka sharing her excitement of this sport and pulling Minami in, no matter her skill level. Golf is one of the few games that can be enjoyed by two people of grossly different skill levels after all, so I hope they keep the spirit of golf true between these two characters and not feel the need to pressure Minami to actually get gud.

-------

For now, I'm impressed that they've drawn Minami as a n00b, while drawing Haruka like she knows what she's doing. They definitely studied enough golfers and worked on the animation. It feels like a reasonable amount of quality and effort went into the drawings and music, which itself shows confidence and promise for future episodes.

--------

So I guess for me personally, that puts Zenshu and Sorairo Utility as the top two new shows this season so far. I'll be going down the rest of my list soon but somehow these are the anime that are working with my personality and sense of humor.

You watched good stuff...

Thanks. As I stated, most of my collection is old anime. To give a few more examples:

City Hunter, Video Girl Ai, Dirty Pair, Maison Ikkoku, Battle Angel Alita (aka Gunnm), Ah My Goddess, everything Tenchi Muyo, the OG Mobile Suit Gundam, G Gundam, Cat's Eye, Angel Heart, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2032, Bubblegum Clash, A.D. Police, and that's just some of them.

Did you watch gunsmith cats? Fantastic animation for its time...
I watched most of those as well, though never been into Gundam, but love all of across...
I need to look into my collection of oldies, some gems there...

Check out City Hunter if you haven't seen it.

I'm huge into Gundam. Have seen the original series and some of the sequels to it when they were on TV here back in the day. Seen G Gundam, Gundam Wing, Gundam X, Gundam 00, and the first two seasons of Iron Blooded Orphans. Need to see Gundam Unicorn. I should probably rewatch the original and all it's follow ups because I saw them in English and 20 years ago almost on TV. On my desk by my rig:

A very incomplete list of what I've watched.

City Hunter / Riding Bean / Gunsmith Cats are a shared universe created by Kenichi Sonoda.
Bean even appears in one episode of Gunsmith

Gasaraki eh? I have that too. It was cool but kind of strange. Thought Full Metal Panic was better.

I checked city hunter back in the day and didn't pick my interest...
Vagely remember gasaraki...
Fmp fumofu was legendary, the third or 4th season, they tried too hard not to kill the mc, didn't age too well...

FMP Fumoffu is better than the main series. The funniest anime I've seen besides Irresponsible Captain Tylor. A lot of people hated Fumoffu but I actually have a t shirt with Bonta-Kun holding an assault rifle and bullet holes around him. XD

I enjoyed all of FMP and the manga. I wouldn't call it the funniest by far, but it was fun.

I wanted to remember some stuff the other day, and was just checking inventory and found some...

One of them is freedom, a distopian space faring racing OVA with Akira's creator Katsuhiro Ootomo providing the art, it's from the early 00's but pretty damn good watch...

You got photon, if you are looking for a good laugh and don't mind a bit of spiciness, it will be well worth the watch...

There's Blue submarine no 6, for me it was a great watch with art from Murata Renji, about some seafaring, a guy in a sub, vicious fish man looking to murder everything and some mysterious and beautiful fish girls that get dragged into the mess...

Jin Roh, is an interesting movie, sort of post apocalyptic post WWII dystopian world, this one gets bloody quickly but pretty solid action and plot...

I can dump more If Y'all want :D

I can go deep into space opera stuff, got a couple or more of the good old ones...
Like Outlaw Star, space ships fighting with axes? What nonsense is this?
Think of it as a sort of Gurren Lagann predecessor of sorts but in space...

Edit: I forgot a mecha masterpiece: Top o Nerae! Or gunbuster as well, one of many Gainax's masterpieces and as a bonus, comes with a pretty good sequel too...
This is late 80's peak animation...

I will have to look into and possibly watch some of these. Top O Nerae sounds like the one I'd be most interested in, as you describe it as peak late 80s animation. Have you seen Patlabor? I've seen the OVA, the TV show, and the second OVA, I think that's it for it. Fantastic mecha series with great characters.

I used to think 90s anime was the best, until I watched a LOT of 80s shows like Dirty Pair, City Hunter, Cats Eye, Patlabor, BGC, Maison Ikkoku, and a few others I'm forgetting now.

All the good stuff, I did watch patlabor, not sure if everything but I did...
Gits, the movie is just awesome...
Last gunbuster ep, thats cinema right there...
And btw, perfect space time work they done in the plot, time dilation and all that...
Also, some of the best "plot" too...
Take a look at escaflowne if you haven't, it's OK to jump straight into the movie too...

Anyone into j-pop here?
Take a look at this...

I've seen all of Escaflowne, including the movie (which I didn't care for, it's nothing like the show). GITS original movie is a masterpiece. I have not seen Gunbuster.

I am not into jpop or kpop EXCEPT Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. Lol. Her old stuff especially, 2012-2015. I am, however, a fan of multiple J-Metal bands, including a couple of visual k bands. (I just like their music). What you linked was decent though.

Ado is currently the hottest J star worldwide and her music is pretty fascinating...
Take this one too :D

Do you listen to reol or babymetal though?
I listened to some momoiro clover z too, they did a colab with KISS some time ago...

While the Escaflowne series was just great, the movie did pretty well imo, great fan of the music too...

It was pretty good. I think it could have used another episode to fill in a bit more of the story. I'm not a fan of the CGI animation as it was especially noticeable with the technology at the time. I feel a need for Cup Noodles now...
