Is my brand new monitor messed up or am I seeing things?

I have found a review for Asus PG279QM meanwhile. Looks promising, but it only has edge backlight. It's also somewhat cheaper than the CM, and is sold locally.

Btw, I enabled HDR in Windows, started a game, and am wondering what the big deal with HDR is. There are no vibrant and rich colours at all, everything just looks brighter. Is that it? Like, seriously?

Well it supposedly makes them vibrant like a higher contrast level. I would check the local store's warranty and Asus warranty on dead picture elements. Seems local is less risk of receiving a damaged good and a quicker swap time if unit went bad suddenly

I was wrong about the Asus, I only found an old listing :( The monitor seems to be end of life :( Noone has it in stock anywhere. On top of that it seems to had been extremely expensive when it was still in the market.

Are you still within the two week no hassle return window?

Yes, I've had the monitor for about a week and change.
When I get response from the support, I will ask them if they would simply replace it with another piece, which would save time. I'll give it one more change.

Well, anything above 120Hz is high refresh rate to me. That's not the problem really. The problem is availability of non-OLED monitors under 4k resolution. The market seems to have evolved way too quickly, and 1440p seems to be on the decline.

I don't need to get a monitor with the highest refresh rate, but it needs to have good image quality and decent enough response times, otherwise I can just stick with 60Hz.
I was previously eying one of the new IPS black monitors from Dell, the U2724D, but people on reddit reported the response times were really bad, and I guess blurry image due to bad response times are just as bad as blurry image from low refresh rate :(
If I may, I've got a Dell S3422DWG which is a brilliant monitor. 144 Hz, Freesync Plus/Premium/whatever, HDR400, and all the rest. It's not too expensive, either. It's a VA panel, which I think is the best of both worlds in terms of image quality and response time, imo. Its only downside is some bad backlight bleed which is very apparent on a black screen at full brightness - but you can't see it in actual usage.

I'm not sure if an ultrawide is what you're looking for, but if it is, take a look. I'm definitely gonna keep mine until the end of times (or until it dies - whichever comes sooner). :)

Ultrawide is 21:9, right? No way in hell :D Even this 27"/1440 is killing me. Everything is so tiny my eyes are hurting. The fact that Windows scaling sucks so horribly isn't helping either. I tried 125% and almost threw up. Most stuff looked funky and completely out of place.

I don't want OLED, I can't afford new monitor every two years or whatever is it they last before they burn in.
Actually, I refuse to buy a new monitor more often than once in 10 years or so.
Burn in is real, but it's nowhere near that fast occurring. With all of the built in mitigation they have now 5+ years is very much what I'd expect. Still not a great choice most likely if you want 10 years, but the speed at which they suffer burn in is very overblown by a lot of people.

True, but my monitor sees a LOT of static imagery. I think OLED would be the worst thing I could get.
I also learned the text clarity sucked on this tech (compared to IPS at least). Probably irrelevant for gaming but noticeable in desktop usage.

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.
I am not entirely sure. I do feel _something_ changes when I move up or down, but an IPS panel should have pretty wide viewing angles, shouldn't it?
I don't think it's the colour tint that changes though.
IPS has off-angle contrast loss, so you're going to see something for sure.

The colour temperature shouldn't really change with IPS though, only gamma and contrast, so that is pretty odd.

IMO your monitor looks the backlight is made out of four different batches of mini LEDs. Maybe they come on a massive sheet and your monitor happens to be the one that was cut from where four sheets join?

If it's in your returns window, return it - I can't see how it'll ever get better with age, and it's not something you can adjust out with OSD settings. It obviously bothers you enough to start this thread, so do something about it before you run out of time, I think.

I don't want OLED
I do. But because my desk has a built in hutch that limits the height of my monitors, I am limited to 24 inches and I have not been able to find any 24" OLEDs. :(
I can't afford new monitor every two years or whatever is it they last before they burn in.
Don't believe all the nonsense you read out there. First, OLED technology is over 35 years old! They've learned a thing or two about preventing burn in since it first came out. Even the first OLED TV is over 20 years old.

but my monitor sees a LOT of static imagery
Not likely the type that would be of concern. If you displayed the CNN logo in the corner 24/7, like some airport monitors, that might be a problem. But there are even automatic mitigation techniques for that. Even my 8 year old LG OLED TV has "pixel shifting" that prevents logo burn ins. When it senses a static image has been there for some time, it moves the image a couple pixels in different directions. The shift is too small to see, but plenty big to mitigate burn in.

This TV is on at least 6 hours each day. No burn in. Blues are still brilliant - as are all the other colors. Blacks are VERY black. And contrast cannot be beat.

I am NOT trying to convince you to buy OLED. But I am trying to convince you NOT to dismiss OLED because you believe the problems of early generation OLEDs are going to affect you. It is a mistake to dismiss OLEDs on those grounds and then miss out on some excellent options.

BTW, many, if not most cell phones have been using OLED screens for years now. Burn in problems are not widely reported, neither is reading text.

Ok, but what about text clarity then? I would say gaming is like 0-20% of my time spent at the PC while staring at internet discussions, articles and messing around in Lightroom takes up vast majority.

I spend about 4 - 6 hours per day reading text on my computer. My 72 year old eyes require sharp text. So I looked into the reports about text and OLED monitors and you are right, there have been many reports of people complaining that text is not as clear as with other technologies. But the most recent reports I have seen suggest great improvements in that area. Other reports say it was only a problem at first and soon their eyes got used to it.

There were other factors - including size of the monitor and how close the user sat to it.

If I were a professional journalist where text was my life, it might be a concern for me. But then again, if I were a professional journalist, I might be inclined to "invest" in a higher-end model that has sharp text.

Again, I am just saying don't rule out a monitor just because it is OLED. If possible, go see it for yourself.

I see there are virtually no 1440p QD-OLED monitors reviewed out there though, and those I could find easily cost 50% more than the already rather expensive Cooler Master, so unfortunately it's out of the question for foreseeable future.

I couldn't say the same about my Galaxy S Phones, 1, 4, 5 all had burn in. I had an A11, then moved to Motorolla.

I realize it happens. I said it is not "widely reported". I've not seen it on any of my Samsung phones, including my current 3 year old Flip 3 AMOLED. But then I don't live on my cell phone either.

Interested how you like your Motorola? Full disclosure, proud owner of 42.4220 shares of MSI.

IPS has off-angle contrast loss, so you're going to see something for sure.
Not as bad as VA, the only tech with better viewing angles is OLED.

Uniformity is an issue even for IPS and also happens on OLED screens. My previous 1080p 144 Hz IPS had visibly warmer areas in the left third of the screen but you could only notice it when watching black and white movies.

@Octopuss
I don't know why you even bothered with that monitor, that CM lineup was plagued by firmware, VRR, local dimming and HDR issues since day 1.

Did you buy it directly from them or from a retailer? How far are you into the 2-week return window?
