SAM problem

I just upgraded to R7 5800x3D from 5600X , and now when I enable SAM , my M2 slot turns off and my game drive storage goes missing both in bios and in disk management. It worked for couple of hours after installing the CPU and I turned off the PC for 1 hour or so and when I came back I found that nvme in slot M2 is missing after trying to run a game from there which is located on it .Reseting CMOS and default settings in BIOS helped. None of the SATA ports are occupied. BIOS is updated to latest ver. ,chipset drivers too.

Did you upgrade UEFI before swapping chips?

Did you ever install AMD RAID driver? In UEFI can you see if your NVMe device is recognized there? If it is I would look at windows device manager and see if AMD Bottom Device driver is present. If it is then select it and change the driver to Standard NVMe driver and reboot.

Did you ever install AMD RAID driver? In UEFI can you see if your NVMe device is recognized there? If it is I would look at windows device manager and see if AMD Bottom Device driver is present. If it is then select it and change the driver to Standard NVMe driver and reboot.

With UEFI you mean BIOS ? Yes I have the latest BIOS for my Motherboard. AMD RAID driver I think it was installed along with my chipset drivers. I don't use RAID anyway. NVME gets unrecognized only when SAM is turned on.When turned off - nvme gets recognized and ready for work.

I am with 3611 bios which is the newest. My verbatim is no longer in my system neither any HDD or SSD , just M1 and M2 slots occupied by 2 NVME drives now. My motherboard manual says when M2 occupied that sata ports 5 and 6 will be disabled. I never used them since I occupied M2 slot and my HDD was plugged in Sata port 1. After upgrading today from 5600x to 5800x3D at first my NVME M2 wasn't recognized while HDD from sata port and M1 were there and working. After removing HDD from SATA port 1 and leaving all sata ports free with only M1 and M2 slots occupied it was recognizable and functional again.After I turned off my PC for a while (+1 hours) and went back to the pc and turned it on again - the nvme wasn't there and I was left with only M1 working.Clearing CMOS and set default settings on BIOS fixed the problem immediately. After that I tried to turn back SAM on and it occured again. After many switches between SAM on vs off I tried with SAM off and plugging in back the HDD and the result was again - M2_2 missing... Now I did fresh reinstall on my gpu drivers and disabling all the SATA ports and set manual PCIE Lanes for my M2 slots from Auto to 3lanes and 4 lanes. For now it works. I will have to turn off the pc again for couple of hours to check if the problem presists

I am now wondering if that used CPU is flaky.

It's working normal when gaming and stress testing. 50-60C in gaming, 75C max in stress testing , and in AIDA64 on FPU and OCCT gets to 90C but they are extreme situation stress test as far as I know. In 3d cache test also performs great. All the info from the CPU is actual and not some fake CPU or something.I still think I should have reinstall the windows after installing new CPU but people say it's not necessarly.All I did is setting bios settings to default before putting it in the mobo. Some things happened after that with the boot some POST for TPM or some kind of messages I pressed Y and then I was booted in Windows. I dunno , why it should be flaky except the fact that the IHS soldering is strange from one of the sides

What works is never the way to evaluate hardware though. It's what does not work. If the issue returns the CPU is probably damaged. I have 2 5800X3D. I have used one on a X370 and B450 and never had an issue. SAM should not be causing issues IME.

You could be right it is a problem with the board you have. It is just that I have read of some instances with damage to different parts of the AM4 CPU in the past, which is why I speculate that direction. Especially considering my own experiences with the 5800X3D and the history of a used CPU being unknown. I/O off of the CPU being damaged in not impossible.

Were you able to see the NVMe in UEFI/BIOS when SAM is enabled? For example many UEFI/BIOS have secure erase tool for SSD/NVMe. Also be sure not to use any previously saved UEFI/BIOS profiles after upgrading UEFI. Usually any saved profiles should be cleared after updated but not every vendor does that or may not do that consistently between UEFI updates. When in doubt reset to defaults then configure and save a new profile for reuse.

Have you checked that the CPU inserted cleanly without bending any pins.
On LGA platforms, both Intel and AMD I've had symptoms you're describing from bent pins in the socket, issues went away after straightening socket pins.

I think I'd notice if a pin was bent trying to instert an AM4 chip, but hey - you'll be able to say whether it dropped in effortlessly under its own weight or required a bit of a nudge to seat. If it was the latter, remove the CPU, double check the pins look perfectly straight and correct any that need straightening.

Good point. If an AMD CPU from AM4 back is not ZIF though? I immediately pull it and grab the magnifier. The number of users that bend pins by having the CPU stick to the cooler is too damned high!

I just inspected the pins , saw no bented pins or TIM on them , looks pretty clear. and reinstalled it again.CPU works just fine , the problem is when I enable SAM - m2 slot goes missing until I disable it. It can work with SAM and M2_2 slot drive until I turn off the pc.After this m2 is missing again. For example right now I set BIOS settings to default> booted to windows >ssd available without SAM>turned off pc>went into bios > enabled sam>booted into windwos> both sam and ssd are working> turning off pc > turning on pc> only sam works and ssd from M2 missing.More interesting thing is when I use port 1-2-3-4 from sata it disables my nvme immediately which shouldn't happen because for my mobo when M2_2 is occupied it disabled only port 5 and 6

Let me start again. Today I bought that 5800x3d chip. Before that I was using my current system with 5600x with zero problems.I swapped the chip and ofcourse some expected POST messages appeared in the first boot.Somehing about TPM popped out and I pressed Y (for yes) ,I booted into windows and started working then I noticed my M2_2 nvme missing while HDD was there. I thought that maybe my hdd is still in 5th or 6th sata port(I didn't remembered which side was 1/2 and 5/6 only thing I knew that 3/4 were in the middle , they are 2x2 stacket in column of 3) so I turned off pc and pulled out the cable of the sata drive.After reboot nvme was there.It was working fine for 2 hours while I was testing the cpu stability via stress test etc. Everything was fine and I had to go out for a while maybe hour or 2 and when I go out of the house I always turn off my pc. I turned it off and went out , when I came back I never tried to do testing but straight to gaming, choose my game(which was located on the nvme drive which was in M2_2 slot) and it said the directory missing > went to This Computer and saw that the drive is missing, went to disk management - also missing ... went to bios - also missing... I got panicked ,opened pc reseated the nvme again.. reseted bios to default with shorting the mobo on the clear cmos pins and took out the CMOS battery , waited 5 minute inpatiently - turned on the PC > everything was fine and ssd was there.Went back to configure my RAM timings from 2133 default to 3600 as it is (I am not using D.C.O.P) but manual overclocking because it cause my pc to crash for some reason) , configure RAM then configured SAM because I know it boosts my pc performance significantly and why not ? Turned on SAM , pc was working , resartted the pc to check if all of this will happen again - it happened. You may be right that software could not work propperly after hardware swap , but that's not just software that is bios and hardware work that is not doing well... I tried even ddu the graphics driver and reinstalling it again - doesn't worked..

Change back to the 5600X and verify if the issue is gone.

I just took out this cpu in order to check for bented pins and putted it back applying new thermal paste again , 2nd time today. I don't think it's the cpu and I don't really want to change cpu again because this AiO is spike in the a*s ...I think it's not the CPU since its working fine , something got messed up swapping the hardware.I will try disabling CSM and reflashing bios , if this doesn't help I am going to reinstall OS , wish me luck. I did sfc /scannow and windows found corrupted files and fixed them. Gonna try again now

I also tried ChatGPT suggested way by putting PCIe lanes on M1 and M2 slots from Auto to manual gen4 for M1 and gen3 for M2 , didn't worked.

Update: Just flashed bios again , didn't worked...
now I noticed that everytime i go to bios (even when I am not changing anything and booting from there to the windows - both SAM and nvme are working until I reset or turn off my pc . What the hell is going on ?

Since you don't want to swap CPU, try downgrading to to BIOS 3202 first. That was the last version that had any stability fixes, everything since then is either vulnerability patching, or support for Asus' weird graphics card with an NVMe slot built in. Doesn't hurt to go back to a version from before that thing was launched and given BIOS support on your motherboard.

I guess I will have to switch motherboard or buy 2tb nvme and use just 1 nvme instead of 2. Both new mobo and nvme costs the same - at least here in my country. With the mobo I could go wrong and it could not work again. But with the NVME I could only use it like that. But I will never know if it's from the mobo. Why it would be from the mobo if it's working propperly when booting trought BIOS ? Isn't bios 3303 for 5800x3d ? Or I am missing something ? By the way I completed all the steps from the reddit link and still no result

Stop. You need someone that knows what they are doing to look at it first. A lot of leaps in logic and gaps in the diagnostic process here. A random reddit post with a similar issue is not a reason to rebuild the whole system. It could still be any number of things...

Recall, back in the day that addressing 'above the 4G memory hole' was glitchy on some boards, and POST could be inconsistent or devices would not be addressed @ POST.
ReBar/SAM specifically involves re-allocating and re-addressing memory spaces regarding PCIe Graphics.

To give an example, my friend's Gigabyte B650 board likes to re-arrange and re-address the NVME drives.
The board physically arranges:
CPU-M.2-0
CPU-M.2-1
B650-M.2

However, if you occupy all 3 slots, the firmware and OS both re-arrange to:
CPU-M.2-0
B650-M.2
CPU-M.2-1

That board also inconsistently sets settings. (IGP disable and SATA disable in particular, are a crapshoot if the setting will 'stick')

IMO:
Reset CMOS
Go into UEFI, ensure CSM/Legacy Boot is *disabled*, *disable* EVERY on-board device not in use (Serial, parallel, IR, LAN, Audio, SATA controller, etc.)
Reboot, Go back into UEFI, ensure all devices are present, enable Above 4G Decode and ReBAR/SAM.
Reboot, check devices in UEFI/Windows.

If the issue persists, do as Chrispy_ recc'd and *roll back* a firmware revision. ('Could even start @ the 1st w/ 5800X3D support, and see if that resolves the issue. Then, update until it breaks)

Tried to do that manual from the video step by step for this board. BIOS Flashback LED light is now green for 20min as it was blinking for 3 seconds in the begining.It says wait until the light goes out.Should I stay like that for another 30 minutes?
