Completely agree, but ATM im working through some graphics disfunctions (VPU recoveries) in games . So untill I get this sorted or possibly RMA'd Im going to keep the 3.6GHZ on the CPU...lol

slowing my card speed down a bit usually cures that for me sneaky.. :roll:

in the case of the 3870 way more than i usually have to.. assuming u aint running stock the answer to your vpu recover problems seems pretty simple to me.. it wont run gaming stable quite as fast as u think it will.. mine didnt..

2006 all day no problems.. but to avoid the odd vpu recover i had to game way slower than it benches 2006 at..

an example.. i could run the fur bench at 885 core... 2006 at 855 core.. but i ended up right down to 830 before i cured the odd vpu recover in games.. this was before the pencil but i expect the same thing to happen just at higher core speeds..

a vpu recover means it aint stable at the speeds u are running it at doing whatever its doing.. pretty simple.. or at least it was for me.. my 3870 does seem to have a way higher "sort of" stable speed than what i have been used to with all my other cards..

885 down to 830 is a very wide "sort of" area i will admit.. but it was the case for me..

ps.. i normally think of 10 mhz core speed variation as a "sort of stable" area.. the 3870 has a way wider one than this.. step by step i went slowly down from what i thought was stable till in the end the vpu recovers stopped completely.. but stopped they did.. and any attempt to game faster brought em back in again..

This card is running stock ATM and the VPU recoveries are in game, for some reason large explosions and very high texture detailed parts of the game cause VPU recoveries.

I can OC the core to 890ish no Vmod to run 05-06 but it doesnt pick up on the issue. So it has to be something the games are using that the synthetics dont test for!

Games that are crashing: COD4 ,FFOW beta, GuildWars TW08 and TOCA run with n issues...oh and this is at low graphical settings as well, set all low or off.

i had the vpu recovers in all games at much over 830 core.. at 830 i dont get any.. 2006 would bench way over that..

games do find things that the synthetics dont.. or at least it seems with a 3870 card they do.. one is just the fact the games last longer.. or it was with me.. but it was also core speed related.. it sounds a bit dodgy if u are getting vpu recovers at stock speeds.. i just assumed u were running overclocked.. it might be rma time.. run 2006 or not.. if it dosnt play games at stock speeds its faulty..

i have always used 2006 running reliably as a basic stabilty test.. it dont seem to work that way with this card thow.. i played crysis.. cod 4.. gears of war.. the stupid psycho and his mate game.. they all did the same thing over 830.. a vpu recover every so often.. at higher speeds a simple crash or lock up.. if its just the one game i put it down to the game.. when its several its the card..

again i assume u have tried all the known cures so wont bore u with coming out with any guesses..

Ive pretty much put tit through everything I think that is at my disposal to try as a fix without Vmodding. (wont Vmod for stability) As you say looks more and more like an RMA is in order. Im just exausting everything , so I can let Vtek know what I have done so I dont need to troubleshoot with some noob on an email basis!

Yes sneekypeet I do intend to OC it once I have the new mobo in thats the reason I got the new board and 100% the reason I went with the CPU I have they OC very well for their reasonably low cost to buy..

Yes the RAM is Ballistix running at 4,3,3,9,1T at 1:1 ratio, and again OC'ing is the reason for buying those as well currently I have bumped things up a little on this mobo (only brought FSB up to 900) to make a run in 3DM06 real quick before I tear the machine down so I'll update again tonight

well the settings of 4-4-4-8 2T is at 2.3V and I am running memtest86+ with no errors at this speed. Good luck with yours. BTW the review I read says he got his to 590 @ 5-5-5-15 at 2.3V.

problem is,

I posted them on my free site, and they dont let me download the pics at full rez, I have the pics on my home computer and Im at work right now

and they lock down the pics real well, i would do a screen shot but my rez is too low on my laptop to get the whole pic
