If cores where truly parked, utilization should be 0% like shown in this image, 4 cores\tread have 0%, yours have 3-9%, that is not core parking :) Different scenes in different games utilize treads\cores differntly. A very populated scene in CP2077 will use more CPU-power than a low populated one since CPU handles much of the NPC-interactions. Powersaving-modes, certain driver issues, chipset-driver messups etc is more likely causes if vertain cores always gets low utilization.

This is before and after. Too much has changed between runs to make any sense of anything.

FPS has more than doubled (with the not 'core parking' in effect).
GPU use is lower, despite doubling the FPS. So there's too much variance in the system config to answer anything. This isn't apples to apples. It's apples to spanners.

If the OP wants clarity, we need to know the resolution used before and after, if it is the same GPU, and what settings.

Otherwise, I'm closing this down.

No offense intended, but you guys are entirely missing the point with the screenshots - i was simply showing the threading issue with the 7800x3d. The first screenshot has resolution lowered to remove any gpu bottleneck, to make sure that wasn't the reason for the threads not being used (although it should use all threads regardless, just at a lowered usage). The 2nd screenshot was purely posted as a response to @3x0 as he claimed that the game just can't use all threads, which is clearly incorrect, which i showed with the screenshot of my old setup using all 16 threads.

Fps was never the point, hence why i didn't mention it once, and why i initially just posted the one screenshot.

I am just looking to resolve why the cpu doesn't use all threads in games, like my previous 11700f setup did, which is also a 16 thread cpu.

It has been established that core parking isn't the issue. Atm im leaning towards bios / mobo drivers.

I've changed the title to 'thread usage issue'.

the game doesn't use hyperthreading to its fullest
Cyberpunk's engine is actually designed to spread all game tasks on a lot of cores. That's why I picked it for the testing in my article in the first place.

If my screenshots shows that it can scale to 16 threads, why should it be different in the OP's situation?

Just tested it for you, on 13900KS I see it scale to 28 threads that are spread fairly evenly

@Dragam1337 I'm having the same issue with Cyberpunk on a 7800x3d as well. Did you solve it by re-installing windows and opting-out of the PPM driver install?

If PPM is in BIOS, why not disable at this level ?

Sadly didn't fix it in cyberpunk, no - even when everything is fresh installed (without ppm), it doesn't work correctly in cyberpunk. Witcher 3 remaster also has threads where usage is close to 0, unlike on the 11700f where all threads saw usage.

But other games are looking fine now - hogwarts and the last of us for instance.

Are you on win10 or win11 ?

I'm on windows 10 with a b650 mobo. I've also tried re-installing windows 10 and the AMD chipset drivers without PPM but that didn't seen to work for Cyberpunk. I haven't tested other games though.

they actually found this same issue in the GN review... there's some sort of bug with the 7800x3d and cyberpunk. They too thought it was either a BIOS or a chipset driver issue.

The fact that it also seems to be doing it in Witcher 3 NG means I would even leaned towards it being a specific issue with this engine. Even though I'm sure they have improved it over time at a base level the engine is 8-10 years old. Anyone who kept track of CP2077 knows they seem to have had major issues with the engine and is a big reason they are swapping overt to UE5. Although only time will tell how much that actually helps open world development seems pretty difficult.

On a side note anyone who has used intel for a long time that switches to Ryzen shouldn't expect them to behave the same my 9900K and 5800X behave totally different even though they are both 16 thread cpu overall the 5800X gave me a much better experience and that's really all that matters.

Also windows 11 seems to be the way with all these new cpu even Ryzen 5000 gains around 5% even in gpu limited scenarios.

Not just cyberpunk though.

This is the results from the tests with "corrupted data" by (they think) the PPM driver from being installed with a 7950x3d previously

However, that looks ALOT like what im getting...

And i haven't previously used a 7950x3d, and it's a fresh windows install...

So dunno what the heck is going on...

In other words, apparently not installing the PPM driver didn't fix anything... :/

Maybe time to swap it for a 13900KS then what W1z was testing with.....

Frame Chasers

Had the same issue you are seeing maybe it's a hardware defect or an issue depending on the motherboard you go with.

That wasn't my point - read what he wrote again. He gets full thread usage with his 7800x3d aswell.

So it absolutely can and should use all threads, but it clearly doesn't in several games. And not just for me.

Edit for your edit : maybe it is a hardware defect - mine was delievered loosely in a box after all -_- But i'm leaning towards it being a software defect... bios or driver... cause in cinebench it can go 100% usage on all cores. Mobo bios / drivers combo seems like a likely sinner, though frame chasers is using an msi board, while im using an asus b650e-f strix.

I'm not disagreeing with you but I've seen enough people that have had this similar issue at this point that it may be something wrong with the actual hardware/software making the 13900k or Ks the safer/better option.

Might be man, im all ears for solutions at this point. It's the first time i've gone amd in 20 years, and it has NOT been a great experience... !

But i am personally leaning towards amd's infamously bad software being the culprit, rather than the hardware.

So i remember when cyberpunk came out, the game had a huge issue on 6 core ryzen CPUs because it didn't know how many threads to launch, and there was a RYZEN patch that fixed utilization and gave some huge performance gains... I think it might be related -- new CPU and there's a bug detecting SMT?

(1) The SMT fix for Cyberpunk 2077 is still needed. I guess CDPR never really fixed it. : Amd (reddit.com)

Try this patch and see if it does the trick?

I've had zero issues with either of my AMD 5000 based systems but I've seen others have a ton of issues with the exact same cpu. It was the same with my 3900X that others had major issues with.

Hard to say but my guess is motherboard combination and bad implementation of agesa or else it would just work or not work all the time. I could be wrong likely am but it's really hard to say one way or the other.

W1zzard is using Windows 11 on his test system - unless he can tell us otherwise. I'm going off the review of the 7800X3D he did, it clearly is listed as using Windows 11. You're on 10. Move to 11 and see if the issue stays or goes away.

It might help with cyberpunk specifically, but what about the other games ?

I will try it though.

It is interesting in hogwarts though... i thought it was fixed, as there was SOME usage on all threads... but looking at it closer, the exact same threads that has essentially no usage in warhammer 3, cyberpunk and witcher 3 remaster, has much lower usage than the rest of the threads in hogwarts too.

I also think if you have a spare drive to make a windows install it might be a good idea to try windows 11 and see if you have the same issues.

Also maybe I just didn't see it in any previous post but how is performance is it significantly better or is it worse because at the end of the day that is what matters.

I feel like it's all the same engine detection problem -- CP one was fixed using tweaks to the .ini files...

@W1zzard Said in the review that the fps went from 190 to 215 - so not double the performance, but still fairly substantial.

I do have a spare drive, but i really do not want to use win11 - and honestly, it's just a straight forward single ccx cpu, it shouldn't require any specific os to run properly. And i don't think it does either, when amd sorts out their buggy software.

By engine detection problem, do you mean that the game has issues detecting the cpu and how to handle it correctly, or ?

But yes, it does seem like it's the exact same issue to varying degrees in all games.

Windows 11 still has better thread scheduling and even if you went to a 13900K you'd also want to be on 11...... I'm just saying to verify it's not a specific to W10 issue more than you switching over if you want to stay on 10 that's fine.
