Alder Lake CPUs common discussion

The best cpu now from ADL is a 12400 and a DDR5 board. Hopefully BCLK OC will come to DDR4 boards, but if it does, AMD will be in trouble indeed as there would be no point buying a 56/58 or maybe even 5900x unless you need them for other than gaming.

Bclk clocking in useful terms requires a dual clock generator for two domains and the control in bios.
You can't run pciex devices like nvme drives and GPU on a buss clocked up 50% few board's will have this.
bCLK is CPU benchmark useful only in reality because nothing on the pciex buss will take more than 5/10 MHz increase without dying or failing hard.

Looks like Intel is not going to close this loophole but they took the "it's dangerous and outside of specs" stance. So, they sort of showed they are against it to placate their investors and fans but in the end they'll most likely be more financially successful this way, not to mention all the love from their fans who want to save on CPUs and motherboards.

I might even experiment with my 12700k with BCLK, i know it is possible on this, should be interesting with a combination of multi and BCLK. Maybe lower multi and higher BCLK

My peripherals start acting up when messing with BCLK - keyboard turns off web cam etc.

How high have you gone up?

How are they getting to 137 using BCLK OC on the 12400's?

So ive gone to just north of120 because i wanted to have the TVB clipping work properly on the chip 45x at 5.4 - it does by knocking down to 43~ multi during cinebench runs. It ran fine for a day and then when i woke up the computer the next morning my webcam just stopped working during a Teams call - so I unplugged it and plugged it back in, and as soon as I did that my keyboard shut off.

Unplugging that and plugging it back in fixed that as well... so I thought, "ok, too high - might just want to tweak a few hz to optimize the OC". so I went to like 103ish... everything seemed fine, then one of my sata drives randomly stopped showing up... not sure if related or what. When I put it back to 100/ default I have no issues so i just left it there.

I believe the limit for most boards with ADL K series CPUS are below 103 eg 102.98. The highest I seen on HWBOT is 103.9. You will not be able to do 137 BCLK on a K series ADL only on the non K ADL. AFAIK

If it was possible to do high BCLK on ADL K CPUS the guys on HWBOT will be the first to do so.

I can post easily at 137 and go into windows, they definitely work at that bclk, just on my specific board weird stuff starts happening.

Most likely because your board does not have an external clock gen. The high end ASUS D5 boards have external clock gens, So when you
OC the BCLK on those boards only the RAM and CPU are affected not the other components.

Mine is a D4 board so it would probably cause problems too

I'm not sure if you board has an external clock gen on not. It may have one like the D5 version.

For some weird reason my ram usually shows not exact numbers, like 1798/99 for 1800, so i have my BCLK at 101. i guess there is no need but it bugs me. It does give a slight boost to mem, and core frequencies though lol, and had no ill effects.

Interesting.. mine is actually the opposite way-- My ram actually runs slightly lower due to bclk but reports just fine on that screen.

I have a few pics where my bus is under 100, only by a tad, but it bugs me, so i added 1 to balance it out :)

Wow, ok so I finally have my rig up and running. I did not start building it until yesterday. I decide to grabbing another PSU. I bought a Corsair RM Series RM750. I just swapped gpu's and Ram out of my old rig to keep all of my daughter stuff setup. I ordered some more stuff today.. lol I bought 3x argb fans for my 360 radiator. The 3x rgb on my Phantek 400A aren't that great.. plus only 2x work out of the 3. The lights work on all 3 but one will not start. The biggest reason I bought new fans is that no matter what I did I could not get all three phantek fans to work with the 3 way splitter that came with my Cooler master fans. Right now I have all three fans going to 3x non cpu fan header. I have my pump on one and then I have the 3x corsair mounted to the back and 2x top and have it in the CPU header. It's crazy it sits around 29-33c degrees.

I did almost screw up. I downloaded our RealTemp and was monitoring temps with it. I was messing around with the sensor test and downloaded Prime 95c.. I haven't used P95 in around 8-10 years... lol I started it and wow it sounded like a Huey taking off.. I started watching my temps rise very quickly. I noticed my fan speeds kept ramping up to then realize I had the case fans connected to the CPU header to trick bios. I think it hit 95 before I was able to stop it.. Well for a second or two. lol I kicked myself a few times for that but everything looks fine.

Oh and WOW this thing is fast! I need to test out some games, but so far everything is much faster. I've tested SQL, jumped on a few Terminal Server sessions.. Had multiple Chrome, Firefox, IE Chrome tabs going. I'm very impressed.

I think this is why Intel is concerned and unhappy.

Normally I would tell Intel to put a cork in it, but the way CPU's and motherboard components work these days there is a very real potential for damage of the hardware.

Folks the general word to the wise statement is not to push these chips above 118mhz bclk otherwise you risk permenant damage. I've seen this statement in a few different places.

I think it hit 95 before I was able to stop it.. Well for a second or two.
You're fine, you didn't hurt anything.

Yeah it's much faster than my R5 2600. Thanks! Yeah I cleaned up the spread to I might pull it again later to check things. It's crazy how thick MX-5 is and difficult to spread.. lol

My intel MacBook basically spent the last 5 years regularly sitting at 92 C during use and that thing is still going... Intel chips can take some heat. I think that was the only good thing to come out of the Pentium 4.

I had a 2600x before this, the difference is mighty, kinda like going from a 2600x to a 5900x.

My old board did not like my memories XMP profile and I had to manually set it to 3200mhz.. I couldn't go any higher. This board has no problem at 3600mhz. I'll probably play around with timings and try to overclock it a bit. Also, this new 1tb 980 M.2 SSD is blazing fast. I need to connect the rest of my drives.

I'd love to play around with one of these new Alder Lake chips, first generation from Intel lately to legitimately impress me. However I've already got a 5900X and no real reason to buy a CPU.

Also, the i3-12100F looks like the definite value king right now, shame the board pricing situation is still in shambles. Also shame that AMD has nothing to compete at this price point.

Well, I felt a difference going from a 3900X to a 5900X let alone that lol. Though I don't know if it was because that specific 3900X had some weird quirks or the generational improvement is just that good.

It seems for ADL the sweet spot is 3600c14, i guess even c16 is ok. Mine will run at 4000c16 but it is slower than 3600, so i have mine at 3600c14. I have a WD sn850 1tb for my games which is blazing fast too, and a gen3x4 for boot. So nice having 4xgen4 m.2 slots
