i'm sorry what?! marketing is the one that checks if the drivers are ready?
they did the marketing because the tech said it was ready, that's how it works
That's the story we're told, does it sound credible to you? You think this is how checks and balances work in a company? It sure does explain how they land on this situation every time, lol

AMD techie: yeah, its ready, believe me!
AMD marketeer: okay, I'll single handedly drop this powerpoint then, no need to see proof
AMD retail team: if you say so, we'll just send out the GPUs already

Come on...

Absolutely imaginable scenario.

Guys, am I the only one on this forum who works at a company that's large enough for different departments to just "forget" to disclose critical information with other departments on time?

I don't know anymore what parallel universe people live in sometimes lol. Apparently its all possible these days, but in my direct surroundings, I'm seeing far higher quality. Something doesn't add up ;) Usually its the internet 'reality'

You know, we joke, but I would absolutely believe if that was the exact situation. The whole thing is too bizzare to explain otherwise. The CES presentation without anything but “we are making some new GPUs at some point, trust us guys”, then cards being sent to retailers and the press package with info for reviewers, then the delay with already pre-planned and ready to go advertising with a now false launch date. Now the whole “well, we didn’t plan on the 899 price, it’s gonna be lower, by some undisclosed amount”. It’s honestly a complete shitshow that can only be explained by one hand having no idea what the other is doing. It’s almost comical if it wasn’t coming from a top tech company with decades of experience launching products… like, did you fire everyone in product management and there are only interns left?

On the one hand, I agree. On the other hand, exposure is good for business. And here we are, talking about stuff without any solid info for nearly a month now.

maybe we're on different time zones here.
It's clear to me the backpedalling was made by the tech team when they say nvidia's AI claims.
GPU's out and marketing campaigns already paid for and couldn't be backpedalled

I almost had a serious accident at work not long ago because some other departments forgot to disclose an important health & safety rule change to my department. I work at training. I'm supposed to be the first one to know about things. And this is at a major company, one of the biggest in the sector in the UK. So personally, I totally find it believable with AMD as well.

I dunno whats worse, being fed bullshit and confused, or just confused.
With green GPUs, however, you have some understanding. "X GPU for Y money will be released by Z date and will provide me this number of things. I'm (not) gonna buy it."
With reds... "I am not even sure it's gonna be a GPU and not a dragon dildo at this point."

although I do have my doubts of a $899 planned launch price. 7900 XT level performance at 7900 XT level price 2 years later doesn't make sense.

this is what happens when you let others take over the narrative... and the price decision (nvidia handles that), and the launch data (nvidia also decides that), etc...

AMD is a petal in the wind, no decision about it's course

It's more like...

Greens: "This product will launch at this time, but you probably can't buy it for another month, or two, or seven. It'll cost you this much, but probably more because of reasons. And it'll be this much faster than the predecessor, but only if you enable this, disable that, the moon aligns with Jupiter, and you had a burger for dinner, but with no salad."

Reds: "Bear with us. You'll get something, sometime, for some money. But that's a guarantee."

Blues: "Huh... Sorry, what? Oh, yes, yes... We're on it."

The whole dGPU industry is built around FUD, which is disgusting.

Hahaha yes it is every new release the same the fake news and endless guess work without anything real being tested
Even reviewers can not test cards proper anymore as they have to send them back faster than they want.
Anyway apparently here are people who have a all knowing brain about everything AMD is doing bad and seem to forget that this company is making proper choices
In all they never claimed to release any info at CES and they where right, but even now i kinda would want them to wait a bit longer before a final release and iron out some quirks which might popup for some tasks.
Anyway i want to see proper test with loads of games AND other programs to see where the strong points are in a new card, that i why i wait till the quick buyers have posted some things about the new products.
Better safe than sorry :D

True but do the TA people realise that? They do not.

However, the AMD's TA are so winded out they're gonna stock on aftermarket 7900 XTXs because freak everything and everyone.

When running RT doesn't require a $1,000 GPU, and FSR is pretty much indistinguishable from native (and when game devs don't use it as excuse for no optimisation), I'll speak about them positively, I promise. :)
I can see my own line of reasoning being validated in what I've just quoted, I can't wait for AMD products to join the party!

I never remember reading about the release price being over $550. Some ways back when the rumors started coming out about the 9700XT (exact naming wasn't out then) card the idea was it would be around a 4080-4090 performance and priced at $500. This was when the info was coming out that AMD was not going to participate in the enthusiast range of GPUs.

True. Although, waiting for 2 months to see what the product is actually like shouldn't be a problem, but people are stupid, I guess.

AMD never gave any pricing at all as they already knew it was not going to be released at CES or soon after that event , so complete nonsense
Then why did they ship physical products to retailers in the meantime ?

That's the story we're told, does it sound credible to you? You think this is how checks and balances work in a company? It sure does explain how they land on this situation every time, lol

I don't believe in the drivers arc, it's fundamentally a pricing issue IMHO.

But regardless, yes, the scenario you outline is entirely believable. It's not the marketing department's attribution to decide whether engineers have done a good job. In fact, I doubt they're having any authority over the engineers. They'll just assume the information is correct and produce commercial materials accordingly.

Greensters claimed the 5070 is faster than a 4090.
I dunno whats worse, being fed bullshit and confused, or just confused.
Professional bullshit vs incompetent bullshit. Pick your poison.

Of course you can't. But you can also decide to change the price at the last minute. That's the whole issue here.

that's not the last minute, that's overtime.

I think the problem is that there is a huge delta between what they initially wanted to charge and what they now have to charge (thanks to nvidias pricing) that created this whole bag of issues. This is a horrorshow.
