AMD Radeon R9 290 4 GB

About the noise catastrophe everyone is talking about, my own vcard on the review here in tpu is rate 48db at full load, that's 1 point less than R9 290 and 2 less than the X variant.
I honestly can't even hear the vcard's fan when playing...

Not necessarily so, dude: different people can use the same cards and claim different opinions about the noise it makes, regardless of the actual sound level.

Think of it this way: noise is in the ear of the listener :p

A lot of it depends on whether the fans make more of a windrush sound, or if they have an irritating whine or buzz to them.

It also depends on the particular sample you have, your case and your own perception of noise along with the environment that card is used in.

And this too. :)

Well, at least i now know what all the fuzz is about.

this or the 290x will be my xmas present to myself this year. along with a full cover water block. I could care less about the noise. I just need a beast of a card to carry me another few years. my gtx470 is still running strong, still maxes out BF3 and gives steady 62fps with vsync on.

My 290 does make what I would call a loud hum at full load.

But it does not sound like the turbine that my 6950 did with the stock cooler.

However, it got a waterblock for that precise reason.

This one will too with the added benefit of performing more consistently.

will it take a 290x bios and open up those shaders... that's the question...
