These cards would be great and exciting at 599 and 699€. People ripping Nvidia for naming scheme, AMD has done the exact same thing. These are 7800 series cards being price gouged. Considering the economics of the world at the moment , who still thinks AMD are the good guys? Just as bad as Nvidia.
I do agree that both 7900 and 4080 series are not worth their asking price and if it wasn't for this whole mining bonanza price creep both Nvidia and AMD would have been laughed out for pricing them at around or above $1k.
Seeing how we still see frequent sales on 6000-series from AMD and 30-series from Nvidia we won't see any price drop for the next 2-3 months, at least.

There is an improvement for the 7900xtx over 6900xt though. Around 40% better for the same price (MSRP)
That would be fine IF 4080 did not exist. The problem is that the 7900XTX is the replacement of the 6900 XT but only in price. In performance it actually replaces the 6800XT. Also, the 4080 is overpriced by at least $450. So........7900XTX is also overpriced, by $300.

what does that tell us about upcoming midrange cards? Don't bother, buy RX 6000's?
kind of feels that way.

I'm not sure how did you conclude that the 7900xtx replaces the 6800xt? I went with the notion of a flagship to flagship (chip to chip) so I have not considered 6950XT since that is literally the same chip as the 6900xt just better binned and memory bandwidth is increased. 7900xtx is a new chip release not better binned 7900xt.
No matter what your take is, the price stayed the same for the 7900xtx vs 6900xt. Anyway the price is not great and it should have been lower for sure.

Don't know how to explain it more clearly: It does not matter if the 7900XTX is the fastest radeon. BECAUSE it competes with the 4080 in performance. Guess which gpu competed with the 3080 in performance last gen?
AMD can call it whatever they want, performance does not lie.

Every card sold out everywhere. The As Rock Aqua is $2100 CAD. I am getting the Gigabyte and a block from Alphacool. I should be able to save $500-600.

In Canada, the XTX was available for a small markup over the US price: $ 1399 or about 1033 USD. AMD's queue was quick, but the XTX is sold out. AMD's price is closer to the US price: $ 1364.66 or about 1008 USD.

I'd rather pick up a 6950XT at my local Micro Center for about $780 if I was in the market for a new GPU right now. It just falls behind the 7900XT by 5-10% and the power draws are very similar. Save myself a good $100 for a card that's just about the same as a 7900XT.

Who got one? I was at Newegg at 6:01 and by the time I got to add it to my cart and check out they were already all gone. Oh well, I decided that going from SATA to NVMe for my boot drive would be worth it so I ordered a Samsung 980 Pro 1TB with the $100 savings and bought an XT instead. Overall it will make me happier as I use my PC for more than just gaming than if I'd bought the XTX and happiness per dollar matters too.

At this point, I'm just waiting until the 4090 is in stock. Time be damned. The GTX 1060 3GB plays Doom Eternal at 4k 60 fps low anyways somehow.

I was able to order a 7900XTX in Germany for 1150€ from notebooksbilliger.de, lets see if they actually have enough stock to supply all orders.

Price on AMD.com was 1125€, but those were sold out before I was out of the queue.

Some shops are now selling them for as high as 1300€ (for a reference design card), custom designs go even higher which makes them highly uninteresting since a RTX4080 can be had for 1340€.

Edit: For people in Germany: The offer from NBB is still live: https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/powercolor+rx+7900xtx+mba+24gb+789047?nbb=pn.&nbbct=1002_10#Q0C10#Q0C10#Q0C10 Sold out now

This card oozes buyers regret to me, I mean if you're already in the market for a card costing a grand, you might as well spend a bit more and get the better all round product of 4080.
My suspicion is that these cards are priced to push previous inventory that why there are so little cards available. Push the price up through limited availability and if that too much you sell previous gen stock, its a win-win for them.

Who knows, maybe we'll see our own "E. T. The Game" event, a video game in Christmas 1982 so bad that it almost singlehandedly caused the collapse of Atari VCS console sales, causing three year of nearly zero sales in computer gaming - sales of games and hardware fell by 97%!
Perhaps we'll be digging in landfills for high-end GPUs in a couple of years.

It would seem that everyone wants the XTX. I can see the price of the XT coming down in the coming weeks. I just hope that there is a refresh coming next week but I will check Newegg at Midnight to see if they restock the XTX.

That's the current market price. I tried to find one at lower price this morning, not possible, all sold out.

By that logic the newly reviewed XFX 7900 XTX Merc 310 should be $2,149 USD. It's sold out on New Egg and that is the cheapest eBay buy now price.

Seems kinda confusing using different standards for different cards.

You also can't get a $1200 4080 anywhere, yet that is still listed at that price in the comparison tables.

This time it's different. The "architecture" (instruction set) really doesn't matter, I agree with you. What matters is that the new units are dual issue, so the HLSL shaders that get compiled must use a special compilation path that optimizes, merges and combines instructions and data in a way so that they become aligned with how the architecture performs best. This is a difficult task that often requires hand-optimized code.

Random paper that I pulled up to give you an idea: http://www.ai.mit.edu/projects/aries/Documents/vliw.pdf
I'm quite familiar VLIW. AMD's family of architectures prior to GCN, TeraScale, used several variants of this type of design. Shader compilers have no issue with this, they are tailored to optimize the shader programs from IR to native instructions specific to each GPU architecture. This isn't something new, but PR people can absolutely make it sound fancy.

AMD (and the others) certainly have the ability to override shader programs with their own, but this is rarely done for a whole host of reasons; including the difficulty as most are in IR, the risk of introducing bugs or glitches, the sheer number of shader programs (could be hundreds in a single game), game patches overriding this effort, and the difficulty for developers to debug the game with these "optimizations". I say "optimizations" in quotes, because hand-optimized shaders are usually about removing complexity without sacrificing too much fidelity to notice, unlike the shader compiler which retains the original logic.

AMD certainly have a huge repository of shader programs, which is what they use to develop their shader compilers.

There are games which do compile shaders during rendering. I haven't checked why, but it's certainly conceivable that some "generate" countless permutations of shaders based on object properties to save logic inside the shaders.
And the complexity and amount of shaders in games are going up, so inconceivable that AMD will hand-optimize most of these by hand, it would probably be hundreds of thousands, for each GPU architecture. it would still be a lot if you limited it to only the top games.
