I felt like AMD was on a roll with driver support until after a driver like 5-6 drivers ago and now they haven't released a new driver for anything other then the 7000 series, though I feel like both worse drivers and this gap comes down to AMD just not having the resources to use in its driver team that Nvidia has. I think with their dropping GPU market share even though margin and profits are up this might be a really hard issue for AMD to overcome, this is probably where they need a bit more market share in order to have a big enough customer base to spend more money on driver development. Though clearly AMD is better then Intel right now when it comes to GPU drivers though Intel is right now willing to lose money building its GPU base so they certainly have the potential to catchup and pass AMD here.
I currently have a 6900XT and love it, though thinking that I will wait until 8000 series or RTX 5000 to upgrade as I was thinking about upgrading and giving my card to a nephew.
